ReplyTell them they have to spend their own money on it. It's magical how that sharpens their priorities about what they really want.

ReplyAt our school, the teachers know the students incredibly well, and have an excellent sense of each child's strengths and weaknesses. I do not believe they suggest holding back students lightly, so if that was their recommendation, I'd be inclined to accept it. In observing other students who have been retained here, it doesn't seem to have significant social effects - the kids are pretty accepting.

ReplyMy son reads constantly and always joins the summer reading program at the library. We try to read a few suggestions from the school's list, but otherwise he's free to read what he wants - occasionally with some subtle guidance from me.

ReplyI say this with the caveat that I don't have teenagers yet, but this seems to be a no-brainer. No way! First, there should be no "announcements" - there should be asking for permission. And the idea that a teen could take off with anonymous friends with no chaperone to another state? Not in my house.

ReplyThat would definitely require a face-to-face apology, and probably the kiddo breaking into his piggy bank to repay the store. Kids need to know there are consequences for their actions, even seemingly small ones.

ReplyI have absolutely NO advice about this one. My husband & I are lucky to have his entire family in St. Louis - mostly within a 3-mile radius of our house. So we have almost exclusively relied on family for our sitting needs. And once a reliable neighbor!
