MICDS, St. Joe & Burroughs finish strong; rebuild for the future.
This is just one final look back at the 38th annual girls swim championships at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters. This of course, was a spectacular meet, in particular for Burroughs freshman Maddie Wessell; senior Trey Ross of MICDS and junior Grace Stiegemeyer of St. Joseph's Academy. All three programs return a number of swimmers, assuring they will be competitive next season. The Ladue, Frontenac and Olivette Patches will present the West County Swim Stars in two weeks. Enjoy one more look back at the action in the pool last weekend.

Freshman Maddie Wessell has the top times in the area in 3 events. MICDS looks to be strong in the relays along with St. Joe.
Local swimming has its ebbs and flow. Last year with Morgan Mullenix and Bentley Boldt representing Villa Duchesne and with Annie Goessling piling up the points for MICDS, both teams had top 10 finishes. That possibly won't be the case this year. All of the local teams are rebuilding. Some have just one qualifier. One team showing marked improvement is John Burroughs, much in part to sensational freshman Maddie Wessell. The Bombers just might crash the leader board for team scores this time. Here’s how the locals are shaping up for the semifinals Friday and the championship of the annual state tournament at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters Saturday. John Burroughs For the first time in eons, the Bombers will be a possible top-10 contender. And …

The season did not end the way the St. Joseph's Academy Angels softball team had planned it. They ran into a hornets nest Saturday in regional competition at C&H Ballpark in St. Peter's, losing to Francis Howell of St. Charles, 10-0. Howell with a 20-8 record advances to the state quarterfinals with the victory. The St. Joe season comes to a halt at 14-9. It was still a good year for JP Cummings team with a variety of bright spots. The 13-3 win the previous game over Hazelwood West in the sectional championship was a big one. The Angel bats went comatose at the wrong moment. They managed just 2 hits in a 5-run abbreviated game. Theresa DeCosty recorded an inside the park homerun in the first inning to get the Vikings on the board. Emily …

Rams take third; St. Joe stuns the field with title in the 200 freestyle relay.
The 37th annual state swim meet is in the history books, and area teams had their golden moments. Mary Institute Country Day School had its best finish since the 2009 season when they finished fourth. The Rams swam to a third-place team finish with 160 points. Columbia Rock Bridge harvested the gold with 213 points; Springfield Glendale was second with 182. The other big story came in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The St. Joe Angels came from out of nowhere to nail down the championship with a time of 1:38.22. Second was Glendale in 1:38.53. The MICDS Rams piled up a breast stroke title by senior Annie Goessling and some strong relay performances for the third-place finish. There were smiles all around. The Angel relay team, Jenna Osterholt…

Springfield Glendale, Columbia Rock Bridge look to dominate the top spots.
The champions of the 37th annual swim championships will be determined starting today at 3 p.m. at the Rec Plex in St. Peters. A new champion will be crowned. It is not likely the girls of Parkway West will repeat this time around. No official points are kept in this wall to wall action semifinals. Steve Boyce of Springfield Glendale is keeping his own unofficial tally. “I believe its us or Columbia Rock Bridge,” he said. Any hopes of Villa Duchesne jumping from a tie for sixth last year faded in the last event of the night. In explicably, the swimming Saints faded badly in the final 400 freestyle relay, something they had dominated all year long. They finished in ninth place and one place out of the championship field. They could set a …

The Annual Girls State Swim Meet in St. Peters is a Major Success Every Year.
Every year, the state swim and diving championships are held at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters. Ladue and Frontenac area schools came away with numerous memories and medals. All of the area stars are juniors, setting the stage for next season. The meet is sponsored each year by the Missouri State High School Activities Association in Columbia. Sports photographer Joe Nuelle caught the action from the decorated cars in the parking lot to the cheering in the stands and alongside the pool. The event was two days of non stop action. Enjoy a look back at the 36th annual Swimming & Diving championships through the lens of Joe Nuelle.
