Hounds Pound Ladue 3-0. Suburban East Champs

Junior Christina DiFelice gets goal, assist in road win over the Rams.

The Clayton team bus got caught in traffic and arrived a few minutes late for the soccer game against Ladue at the Rams new West Campus field Tuesday. No matter, the Lady Greyhounds exploded off the bus, scoring the first goal of the game just 30 seconds into the contest. The Hounds kept up the pressure with two second half goals and cruised to a 3-0 Suburban East win. For all intents, that hands the conference title to Clayton. Clayton squared its record at 5-5, but more important, 4-0 in conference play. Ladue slipped below .500, falling to 8-9 and 3-1 in conference play. Junior midfielder Christina DiFelice knew the importance of that first goal. The goal was scored by senior Clair Laufketter and assisted by DiFelice. “We wanted to keep…

MICDS Closes Out Districts With a 35-7 Win Over Clayton

Rams 10-0 record, a far cry from 5-5 a year ago.

There’s a list of schools in the MICDS locker-room. That is a list of teams that claimed wins over the Rams one year ago. One by one, the Rams chopped names off that list: first Maplewood, Burroughs, Jeff City Helias, Ladue and finally Clayton. Some did not come easy. Like the season opening one point overtime win at Maplewood. Or the scintillating come-from-behind 56-55 win over Ladue. But last night, it was all Rams as they sewed up a 10-0 regular season record with an easy 35-7 win over host Clayton. Next is a first-round match in the state tournament of the Soldan-Sumner winner. The game is 7 p.m.Wednesday at Kirkwood. Senior quarterback Thomas Millitello cranked it up once more, firing a 51 yard strike to Jack Howell, capping a six …

Ladue Tramples Clayton in District Playoffs, 46-21

Star running back Deavin Edwards may be lost for the season.

No one has to remind Ladue’s coach Mike Tarpey that injuries are part of the game. With less than 30 seconds remaining until half time of the district game at Clayton, two-way star Deavin Edwards severely sprained his ankle making a tackle on a Greyhound runner. The loss could be devastating to the Rams’ chances this year. Edwards scored once in the 46-21 victory over Clayton and had 59 yards rushing on nine carries before hobbling off the field. He has 26 TDs and nearly 2,000 yards gained on the ground this season. Doctors might sideline him the rest of the way. “We have to have players step up and make big plays and take Deavin’s part,” said Tarpey. Like Michael Horton-Loftin who blasted his way into the end zone on a 9 yard yard run to …

Clayton Soccer Team Falls to Ladue, 1-0

But the Greyhounds had a second-half surge in the Thursday home game.

The Ladue Rams soccer team survived a second half surge from the Clayton Greyhounds to earn a 1-0 Suburban East Conference victory last night at Clayton. The Greyhounds (4-3) continuously challenged the Rams (5-3) throughout most of  the second half. Clayton had seven shots on goal in the second half. Clayton’s determined offense kept Rams goalkeeper Joe Lombard on his toes. Lombard finished the contest with 11 saves. “He (Lombard) certainly had a good game, but we’ve had issues with playing with intensity all year,” Ladue coach Matt Prange said. “I thought we played with it tonight. They put pressure on us in the second half, and I think my blood pressure is higher than I want it to be. It was a good win for us.”   Lombard said he faced a…

Four-Team Tuneup at Clayton's Gay Field

Greyhounds, Burroughs, Duchesne and DuBourg mix it up in Jamboree prior to start of season.

No one buys a car without first taking it for a spin. Friday night, four local football coaches took their collective teams out for a test drive prior to the start of the season this coming weekend. Clayton's Greyhounds played gracious hosts to the Burroughs Bombers, Duchesne Pioneers and DuBourg Cavaliers. For 90 minutes, teams got to test their new plays under a broiling sun. Ninety two degree heat didn't offer any fall snap in the air. The referees got a chance to work together, coaches found out more about their teams, players got to hit someone other than their own teammates and fans had a reason to come out on a hot night. "We'll know more when we look at the films," said Burroughs first year coach Gus Frerotte, former NFL …

Ladue, Burroughs, MICDS in Jamborees Friday Night

Last chance to shine before regular season begins.

The local football teams will take the wraps sort of off their 2011 seasons starting this Friday night. A whole host of teams will take part in football jamborees around the area. There is no admission. MICDS will mix it up at Hillsboro with Potosi, Sikeston and St. Clair. That jamboree begins at 7 o'clock. In the regular season, Ladue opens up at Parkway Central 7 p.m. You can hear that game live on the Prepcasts broadcasting network. MICDS comes out with a real challenge playing …

District: Sam Horrell Dismissed As Clayton Football Coach

The district says that while Horrell has been dismissed in connection with information that he was involved in strength and conditioning workouts with eighth graders, he will continue to teach at Clayton High School.

*Editor's note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly spelled the last names of Wolfy Gaidis and Melina DeBona. This article has been updated to reflect the correct spellings. Clayton High School students engaged in a demonstration Friday morning in opposition to the dismissal of football coach Sam Horrell. The students held signs with the phrases “Bring back the coach,” “We want Horrell” and “Bring back coach Horrell.” They backed up the messages with chants of “bring back the coach” and “we want Horrell.”  Earlier this week, Clayton High officials self-reported violations of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) by-laws, a document provided by the School District of Clayton states. The district took …

I agreee with the previous comment that you have not explained why the coach was in violation, whether these rules make sense or not, you haven't even quoted the bylaws. I read the by-laws of the MSHSAA and find it odd that a coach from the CHS could not work with kids at Wydown. We have a small district, it makes sense that we use our resources at different schools. You need to clarify why this …   more ›

Ronald McDonald Day at Ladue

Ronald Almost Stole the Show. Ladue Shutouts Rival Clayton 5-0

Last week, Ladue shut out the Clayton Greyhounds 5-0 in high school baseball. This day was sponsored by the Ladue-Frontenac Patch and the Clayton-Richmond Heights Patch. Ronald McDonald himself threw out the first pitch and almost stole the show. The day turned out to be glorious weather wise with rain before and after the game. The game was in part a benefit for Ronald McDonald House Charities. Noodles & Co. came and grilled their sample products and the samples were mostly tasted by students who made generous donations to the charity. Everyone went home a winner. Katelyn Garrett, five-year-old daughter of the Ladue coach Rob Garrett was the proud winner of a child's bike in a random drawing. Patch and RMDH charities had other get drawing…
