MICDS Forges Way Into Title Game With 1-Nil Win Over Ferocious Clayton

Amber Jones got the solo goal. Rams face Incarnate Word on the Red Knight's Field Thursday for the district title.

Little did MICDS know, but when Amber Jones scored a first-half goal on a rebound from Caroline Militello, that would be the only score of the 1-nil win over a feisty bunch of Clayton Greyhounds in the semifinals of the Class 2, District tournament at Incarnate Word. It was a torturous hot day (for both teams); the grass was tall and scruffy; the Rams were pre-occupied with final exams and there were too many games in too few days. An illogical reasoning would do. More game photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. “We didn’t play our best game. We won,” surmised coach Michael Black. The coach stayed around to scout the opponents for the title game, Thursday, 4 p.m. at IWA. The girls had enough soccer on a 90 degree day, and left. Turns…

St. Joe Swim Squad Shows Championship Form In Impressive Win Over Clayton

Angels nearly sweep the entire meet by winning 11 of 12 events, including all three relays and the diving competition, in a 120-65 win over Greyhounds.

CLAYTON -- At the MSHSAA state championship swim meet last February, the St. Joseph's Academy girls team finished a surprising ninth overall and even brought home a state title by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. This season, head coach Khannie Dastgah believes she has a team that can place even higher at the state meet and several swimmers that could win individual titles if they continue to progress as they have since last season. "I'm so lucky to be coaching at St. Joe," Dastgah said. "These girls really put in the work. They practice three hours a day, five days a week. And they have great unity. It's more of a family, than just a team. So it's really satisfying to coach these girls." That sentiment was probably especially true on…

Villa Saints Pick Up Second Win of the Season

Villa rolls past Clayton to reach title game of the consolation bracket at the MICDS Holiday Tournament.

A 2-6 start to the season is not what veteran Villa coach Jane Ellen Kuenzle had in mind for her team. But she'll take a 43-40 win over Clayton and be satisfied, for the moment. Rachel Arnold dropped in both ends of a 1 and 1 free throw situation with 10.3 seconds left to seal the deal. Villa meets Francis Howell, 1:30 p.m. today in the consolation championship game. Howell defeated Triad in the opposite bracket, 74-54. See more tournament photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook Page. Morgan Schlegel, 5-foot-4 sophomore guard led all scorers with 16 points. Senior forward Alex Roth chipped in 10. Laci Sams, a senior for Clayton had 15 points; Nina Murov added 8. Villa led Clayton at halftime 19-14. The Saints grabbed an early lead and were …

MICDS Girls Clobber Clayton In First Round Holiday Tournament Action

Rams rattle 'Hounds with tough full-court pressure defense, and cruise to big win in opening round of the MICDS Girls Holiday Tournament.

If MICDS girls basketball coach Scott Small could've guessed beforehand how well his Rams would play in their first round game at the MICDS Holiday Tournament against Clayton High on Friday, he couldn't have dreamed of a better performance. The Rams, who hadn't done anything but practice all week, looked like a well-oiled machine Friday night against the Greyhounds at the McDonnell Gymnasium. And they looked especially fantastic on defense, where their relentless full-court pressure caused all kinds of problems for Clayton, and led MICDS to a dynamic 66-15 victory over the 'Hounds. "You know we have to give Clayton credit for that," Small said. "We played them over at their place, a week and a half ago, and it was a seven-point game at …

Ladue Boys Cruise To Season-Opening Hoops Win Over Archrival Clayton In First Round Of Vianney Tournament

Nearly every player on the roster scored at least one basket, and point guard Cornell Johnston dished out 11 assists, as Rams sprint past 'Hounds for 64-45 victory.

KIRKWOOD -- The most anticipated Ladue boys basketball season in nearly a decade got off to a rousing start, Monday night at Vianney High School, as the Rams walloped the archrival Clayton Greyhounds, 64-45, in a first-round game of the 46th Annual Jerry Boeckman Memorial Tournament. The Boeckman Tourney, which is also known as the Vianney Invitational Tournament, features several other top local teams, including Belleville West, Eureka, and Hazelwood Central -- teams that also won on Monday. But the marquee matchup of the night, was the evening nightcap between the longtime enemy Rams and Greyhounds. Ladue though, took all the suspense out of the game quickly, as it jumped out to a big lead in the opening minutes, and didn't let up until …

Ladue Beats Clayton In PKs For Second Time, Claims Class 4 District 5 Soccer Championship

Junior goalkeeper Eric Stuber makes two dynamite saves in penalty kick round to lift Rams to victory over the archrival Greyhounds.

Back on October 12, the Ladue High and Clayton High boys soccer teams played one of their typical thrilling Suburban East Conference matchups that had to be settled in overtime penalty kicks. So it was a surprise to no one on Thursday, when the Rams and Greyhounds battled for the MSHSAA Class 2 District 5 championship at MICDS High School's Hawes Field, that it would once again be decided in PKs. "It's always like this when we play," Ladue head coach Matt Prange said. "It's a great rivalry. The kids always get into it, and it was great out here again tonight." Once it concluded, things were great for Prange and crew -- not so much for Clayton coach Tom Redmond and his Greyhounds -- as Ladue scored on all three of its penalty kicks and held…

MICDS, Clayton Need Another Day To Decide District Semifinal

Rams-Greyhounds soccer semifinal suspended due to darkness, teams will finish up with penalty kicks Wednesday at 3:45 p.m., with the winner to face Ladue in the championship on Thursday.

On Field No. 5 at MICDS High School Tuesday afternoon, top-seeded Ladue made easy work of University City, besting the Lions in 6-1 rout to advance to the Class 2 District 5 championship game on Thursday. Ladue scored early and often, and the outcome was never in doubt. On upper field No. 3 though, district host MICDS and visiting Clayton, were playing an entirely different kind of game. And when it was over, it wasn't over, as the Rams and Greyhounds played a full regulation game, two overtime periods, and a round of penalty kicks, that left the score tied at one, and neither team able to declare itself the winner. The Rams and 'Hounds played so hard, and for so long on Tuesday, they ran out of daylight, leaving the game officials no …

Ladue Wins 28-21 Over Clayton; Making the Hounds Account for Their Sins

Series of penalties ranging from clipping to holding to going off sides hurt Clayton's chances.

Ladue’s football coach Mike Tarpey got a double dose of good news Friday night. For one, his gritty Rams outlasted Clayton in a slugfest, winning 28-21 on Centenne Field on Gay Avenue. More importantly, he got a good medical report on injured Jaron Jones from the hospital before he left the field. Injury silenced a large crowd Midway through the game, Jones came dead aim across the field to tackle a loose Greyhound runner. The G-force of the collision reverberated across the Clayton sideline. Jones sat up momentarily, then lapsed unconscious. Clayton EMS arrived very quickly and took the motionless senior to an area hospital. The news from the hospital was all good. He probably woke up with a very sore neck on Sunday. The Rams had to …

Ladue & Clayton Clash at Gay Field Tonight

The 7 p.m. game is a fierce rivalry between these two schools.

Mike Tarpey is just one of four coaches who have been involved with the Clayton vs Ladue football series, dating back almost 60 years. Keep in mind, a few of those years the two schools did not meet. Tarpey follows the lineage of Bob Davis, Ed Velten and Jerry Maher. Velten and Maher combined for nearly 50 years. The last five years, the series has been played at Clayton’s Gay Field. Ever since Ladue played its entire season on the road, the year the track was being re-built the Hounds have held the home-field advantage. That’s fine with Ladue’s skipper. “Friday night crowds tend to me much bigger and louder than Saturday ones. We’d rather play in front of that atmosphere home or away. We feed off of that kind of energy.” It won’t be home…
