Denzell Conway: MICDS Sprinter Surprises Zeke Elliott at the Finish Line of the 100 Meters

It was a crowning moment of redemption for this sprinter, headed to college in Indiana.

Ah, sweet redemption. Senior speed back Denzell Conway of the MICDS football team got his moment in the sun Saturday, finally. Conway brought down the champ, Ezekiel Elliott of John Burroughs in the district finals of the 100 meter dash on the MICDS track. It was a moment to savor. Conway crossed first at 10.90; Elliott was second at 10.95. Conway pumped his fist into the air at the finish line much to the delight of the partisan MICDS fans, his teammates and coaches too. They were all overjoyed to see this moment come and go. Elliott, toiling through seven races was the champ of the 110 high hurdles (13.77); the 300 intermediate hurdles(38.94) and the 200 meter dash (22.56). Conway said “I’ve been waiting a long, long time for this to …

Michael Peters and Matt Wong set the pace for the youthful Bombers.

The Burroughs tennis team got off on the right foot, defeating visiting Ladue 6-1 in a dual to open the season. Bombers coach Matt Waite said the Rams put up a good fight. "It was much closer than the score indicates," said Waite. Michael Peters and Matt Wong won No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively. Peters, a sophomore defeated Ladue freshman Ben Cobin. Seniors Nick Guo and Charlie Van Doren playing No. 1 singles won their match. The Bombers hit the road for a match with Whitfield Thursday. Here's action from the Burroughs courts Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman has some of the fastest times in the state of Missouri this year.

Maddie Wessell, freshman swimmer at John Burroughs is the MVP Athlete of the Week this week. She narrowly edged out Jimmy Carney, a senior basketball player, also of Burroughs.  This is what she told to Patch. Ladue-Frontenac Patch: College is a long way off but swimmers like to be planning ahead. Any ideas?  Maddie Wessell: I am only a freshman but my aspiration is to attend Stanford or Cal Berkeley. Patch: How is your season going so far? MW: Our season is going pretty well.  JBS girls swimming is well positioned in several events heading into state finals in two weeks. Westminster's Sadie Stipanovich Enters the Coveted 1,000 Point Club

The center, headed to Saint Louis U. fired in 24; Westminster crushed Burroughs, 65-27.

Scoring 1,000 points in a basketball career is a remarkable achievement. With 7:22 left in the Westminster Christian Academy game with John Burroughs Friday night, senior Sadie Stipanovich of the host Wildcats netted that coveted last two points. The crowd behind the Cats bench roared with approval. Every single girl on the bench knew exactly when the moment would happen. Stipanovich is the first Metro Conference player to reach the 1,000 point plateau since Delaney Hobbs did it for MICDS two winters ago. Hobbs is a student at Wake Forest University. Just for good measure, this 6-foot-3 senior who will play next for Saint Louis University got two more points in the game, and the Cats crushed Burroughs, 65-27. A running fourth quarter clock…

Crossroads Has the Hot Hand: They Defeat Host John Burroughs 63-57

Current improves to 14-2. Bombers absorb first loss of the season.

Earlier this week, Burroughs' 16 points per game senior scorer Foye Oluokun has arthroscopic knee surgery and was sidelined for the showdown game with high-flying Crossroads (14-2).  But, excuses are never in order. Teams play with the hand delt them. Oluokun, decked in blue sweat suit got on the court only long enough to wipe perspiration from the floor. The Crossroads Current rode some torrid perimeter shooting to end Burroughs win streak at home Friday night, 63-57.  That was despite the heroic effort of mighty Ezekiel Elliott who drove the lane constantly for 23 points, 20 coming in the second half. But the Clay brothers of Crossroads lit up the second board. Junior Trevor Clay had 22 points; his brother Kameron, a sophomore had 17. …

On "Pink Out Night," MICDS Girls Come Up Smelling Like Roses

Decked out in pink uni's, the Lady Rams toast rival Burroughs to the tune of 70-21.

The MICDS girls basketball team was excited to wear their new pink uniforms. They were excited to play rival John Burroughs and they were excited to perform in front of the largest crowd of the year. If anything, the young Rams were just eager to take the floor and start scoring. They scored the first 10 points on Pink Out night at home, and coasted to an easy 70-21 win over the Bombers, their 13th win in 14 tries. How far can they go this year. How high can they climb. Can they beat Incarnate Word Academy who dropped down to their class and has been crushing everyone by wide margins. Junior Caroline Militello, who popped in 14 points said “We sure hope so.” But that situation is for much later down the line. Taking care of business, the …

Split Decision for the Heavy Weight Combatants at MICDS Friday Night

MICDS girls cruise to 68-21 victory over Bombers; and boys slip by the Rams, 40-38, preserving a 13-0 season.

A heavy weight prize fight was held at the McDonnell gym on the campus of MICDS last night. In the annual tribute to Cancer awareness “Pink Out Night,” the pugalists, the Bombers of Burroughs and Rams of MICDS came away with a split decision. Everyone of the 1,500 or so who packed the gym in a playoff-type atmosphere left getting their money’s worth (though no admission is charged at MICDS.) The boy Bombers ran the season’s record to  perfect 13-0 behind the heft of their heavy-weight football players just eking out a come-from-behind 40-38 victory. Football sensations Zeke Elliott and Foye Oluokun led the way with 11 apiece. Trey Pettus had 13 points; William Morehead 12 in a losing cause. Elliott had to cut short a desperation attempt by…

Maplewood & Burroughs Clash For All the Marbles Friday Night

Bombers put their unbeaten streak on the line. Devils hold home field advantage.

Burroughs Coach Gus Frerotte has spent two Thanksgiving holidays in a row at the Show-Me Bowl football championships. He was there as a new assistant to Todd Small, and then head coach last year. Both times the Bombers got the bridesmaid prize. See all kinds of Burroughs football photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. Frerotte has every intention of making the trek to the Edward Jones for the third-consecutive year. He warned his team about Maplewood, moments after they put the wraps on a 56-0 win over visiting Clayton Saturday. “Maplewood is good. They have a great quarterback (Kahlid Hagens), he’s a load,” said the Burroughs skipper. “We’ll watch some film and get ready for them.” Frankly Bomber players are giddy about going to …

Demolition Derby: Burroughs Routes Clayton 56-0 in Clock-Shortened Game

Zeke Elliott notches 3 more TDs; Peter Schnuck catches 2 TDs and adds an interception.

If they were to pass around game balls following the John Burroughs 56-0 demolition of Clayton Saturday, they’d have to have a lot of them. Many Bombers players on both offense and defense were worthy of recognition. Zeke Elliott scored 3 more TDs, adding to his gaudy total of 28 for the year. That’s 70 TDs the past two seasons for this senior star. Peter Schnuck caught 2 touchdown passes and had an interception. Linebackers Christian Bledsoe and Xavier Bledsoe and Solo Ceesay chased Greyhound QB Jake Brown all over the field. They didn’t yield a point in 4 quarters. Rushil Sheth was perfect on all of his 8 point after kicks. Be our friend on the Ladue-Frontenace Facebook page. But no resting on any laurels for this 7-0 team. They travel …
