New Burroughs Athletic Center to Open Way Ahead of Schedule

The center to open after just 10 1/2 months of construction.

With great pride, Andy Abbott, Head of School at John Burroughs announced to his school community the opening of the new athletic center on May 23. The Class of 2013 will be honored with the annual senior assembly. Barring any unfavorable weather, the graduation ceremony will still be held out of doors in the Grove as it has almost every year since the school was founded. The athletic building opens six weeks ahead of schedule, and the gym, weight and cardeo rooms will be open for the students this summer. Because of the opening, Haertter Hall, the Commons and the Cissel Center will be released to construction on Monday, May 20. The last school wide assembly will be held in Haertter Hall on May 17 and the last performance will be held May …

Jon Hamm Joins the Campaign to Build Performing Arts and Athletic Centers at Burroughs

Construction well underway for both projects on the Burroughs campus.

Actor Jon Hamm, a Golden Globe winner and five-time Emmy Award nominee for his role as Don Draper in the AMC drama series Mad Men, returned to his St. Louis roots earlier this month to help his alma mater, John Burroughs School, raise funds to build its new performing arts center and athletic center.  Hamm, a 1989 Burroughs alumnus who returned to teach theatre during the 1994-95  school year, credits the school, his teachers and parents of his friends with providing direction and support at a pivotal time in his life. John Burroughs School Makes Changes on Campus

Burroughs amends original expansion plan to build two buildings instead of three.

John Burroughs School received approval to move ahead with the plan to build two new buildings on campus. At Monday afternoon’s Ladue City Council meeting, Andy Abbott, head of John Burroughs, asked for an amendment to a plan previously presented and approved in 2005. That plan had included a new theater, a new athletic center and a new auditorium. The new plan combines the auditorium and theater into one performing arts center. “That would be a slightly larger building, which would be located on the site that is presently the outdoor pool and the former tennis courts,” Abbott said. “The other building would be an athletic center located at the Clayton Road entrance.”  “Haerttner Hall, our existing theater, would be torn down and turned …
