Homecoming of Sorts Turns Into a 2-0 Win For Westminster at Ladue

The turf on the West Ladue Campus used to be the Wildcats home base.

For Westminster soccer, the game against Ladue Friday was like a homecoming. Only the homecoming was on the road. Westminster returned to play Ladue at the new West Campus facility. Up until a year ago, that was the home to Westminster Christian Academy. The Wildcats used the return occasion to put a 2-0 shutout on the high-flying Rams. A scoreless first half, played in cold, blustery bone-chilling 40 degrees turned into a second-half scoring bonanza for Westminster. Courtney McGhee scored the go-ahead and game winning goal with an assist from Caroline Moore. Also in the second half, a header by Charisse Williams, off a corner kick from Moore was a thing of beauty. She stepped in on goal keeper Fran Shannon to score and pretty much put the…

Burroughs Boys Comes From 18 Down to Defeat Westminster 63-61

Sophie Stipanovich reaches the 1,000 point mark enroute to a route of the Burroughs girls.

Simply put, the Burroughs boys basketball team beat Westminster Christian Academy 63-61 in regulation time. It was a game for the ages. This was the type of game that probably should have been tied, and gone a couple of overtimes. It was truly a shame anyone had to lose. But Burroughs was defending its honor. Their 15-1 record was cut short last week by Crossroads. Down by as many as 18 in the first half, Steve Wilcutt challenged his Bombers to man up at halftime. There was some shouting in the locker-room. Jimmy Carney played bombs away in the second half, launching three long range 3 pointers; scoring a game-high 22 points along with Ezekiel Elliott’s 20 in order to preserve the victory. The Bombers are 16-1, the best record so far in …

Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes Westminster Past MICDS In Boys Hoops

Wildcats outscore Rams 19-9 in final period to turn close game into an easy fourth quarter win.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- After falling behind by as many as 14 points early in the second quarter, the MICDS boys basketball staged a terrific comeback to tie Friday's Metro League game against Westminster Christian Academy. Unfortunately for the Rams, a tie was as close to the lead as they would get, as Westminster played an almost perfect fourth quarter to get the lead back and eventually pull away for a 60-48 victory over MICDS. "I think we kind of worked so hard to get back in it, that we didn't have a lot of energy left to play like we need to in that fourth quarter," MICDS head coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. "And you have to give (Westminster) credit too. They played really well against us." Three Wildcat players scored in double figures, …

Westminster Gets Its Revenge, Ends MICDS' Win Streak At 11

Rams won MICDS Holiday Tournament championship game over Wildcats back in December, but Westminster returned the favor with a strong performance Friday night.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- As the No. 1 seed and defending champion of the MICDS Holiday Tournament, the Westminster Christian Academy girls basketball team was the overwhelming favorite to win the event again this season. But the third-seeded hosts from MICDS had different plans, and pulled off one of the great surprises of the season by upsetting Westminster to win their own tournament for the first time. That victory happened to be the Rams' eighth in a row, and helped spark them on to three more, for an 11-game winning streak heading into Friday's rematch with the Wildcats at the WCA Gym. This time though, it was Westminster that made the big plays down the stretch of another tight ballgame, and earned itself a hard-fought 58-56 revenge …

MICDS Hoop Squads Both Fall In Double-Dip At Westminster Christian

Metro League rivals staged two dynamite ballgames, with the host Wildcats claiming victory in both.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- If either of the MICDS boys or girls basketball teams thought that their hosts from Westminster Christian Academy were going to be gracious, they found out quickly on Friday that they were sadly mistaken. The host Wildcats were in a foul mood facing the Rams for the second time this season. And both the Westminster boys and girls made sure to show just how discourteous they felt, as both Wildcat squads sent the Rams home with a pair of losses in a critical Metro League doubleheader at the WCA Gym. In the opener, the No. 7-ranked Westminster girls avenged the loss they suffered to the No. 6-ranked Rams in the championship game of the MICDS Holiday Tournament back on December 30, with a 58-56 victory. And in the nightcap…

Happy Birthday Coach: MICDS Girls Win Own Tournament Title Over Westminster

Rams deploy torrid pressing defense and defeat rival Westminster Christian Academy 64-43. Scott Small celebrates his 38th birthday on New Years Eve.

MICDS girls basketball coach Scott Small will celebrate his 38th birthday New Years Eve. He certainly didn’t want to wait until his 40th birthday to defeat rival Westminster Christian Academy. The Rams threw up an unrelenting press and ran the court, ousting the visiting Wildcats 54-43 for the MICDS Holiday tournament title. The tables were turned as Courtney Powell led the Cats to the inaugural tournament title over the Rams last year. More championship photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. All told, Steve Stipanovich’s squad had won the last five games of the series. The first dates back to spring of 2012 when host Westminster ambushed the Rams, halting a 17-game win streak. “It was good for our girls. It was up and down and …

MICDS Boys Fall Just Short In Rally Attempt Against No. 6 Westminster Christian

Senior Trey Pettus scores game-high 21 points to keep Rams in it, but late free throw gives Wildcats just enough to squeak by.

After losing three close ballgames in the first three weeks of the season, MICDS boys basketball coach Matt Hixenbaugh felt like the win his Rams got at the buzzer on a trip to Nashville a couple weeks ago, might finally be the one to get the Rams over the hump. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way last Saturday evening, when MICDS hosted Westminster Christian Academy in the first round of the 2012 MICDS Boys Holiday Invitational Tournament. The Rams trailed from very early on, and fell behind by as many as 12 points at one juncture. But the tournament hosts nearly rallied all the way back, getting to within two points in the final seconds. But a clutch free throw by Westminster's Jack Dohr gave the No. 6-ranked Wildcats just enough …

Ladue Christens New Floor At Neilson Gym With Convincing Win Over Westminster Christian

Rams get 21 points, eight assists, and five rebounds from junior Cornell Johnston to move 5-1, while Wildcats fall to 4-2 despite 19 point night by senior Jack Dohr.

The first varsity boys basketball game on the new floor at Ladue High's Neilson Gymnasium proved a rousing success Thursday night for the home team, as the Rams, thanks to superior play-making on offense and a truly dynamite effort on defense, ran past Westminster Christian Academy, for a 67-54 victory. "We went in with the mentality that we were really going to pressure the perimeter, and make them go off the dribble, and if they did shoot, we didn't want clean threes," Ladue head coach Chad Anderson said. "I think they did get a few too many clean threes from what we were really wanting, and they started the game hot, but they didn't shoot it real well throughout the game." And with Westminster's cold shooting from outside, and a seeming…

Ladue Football Done In For Season By Weather And Westminster

Thursday's district playoff opener was delayed for 50 minutes at the outset due to severe lightning storm. Once things got rolling, it was all Wildcats in a 28-0 victory over the Rams.

BALLWIN -- About 30 minutes before the start of Thursday's MSHSAA Class 4 District 3 playoff opener at Parkway West High School's Longhorn Stadium, between Westminster Christian Academy and Ladue, Mother Nature decided it was time she show everyone thinking about football what real power was. First, the skies opened and a furious storm followed. Then, just for good measure, the lightning strikes began and sent everyone running for cover. The water and light show continued for nearly an hour before the first-round playoff game between two of the more underrated teams in the area. Early on in the game, it seemed lightning struck again -- only this time it wasn't Mother Nature. Instead, it was Westminster junior quarterback Brett Bond who …

Oh Sisters: Westminster goes 0-for-2 in the State Tournament

Wildcats fall to St. Louis' Miller Career Academy 59-50 in third-place game.

Columbia--Westminster coach Steve Stipanovich had way to much success previously at the University of Missouri and with the Indiana Pacers to settle for things like getting up at the crack of dawn to play a third-place game. However his lot was cast. Westminster dropped a semifinal game with Smithville, 47-37, shoving his girls into the Class 4 third-place game today at the Mizzou Arena versus the Phonex of St. Louis' Miller Career Academy. The emotions flashed across the faces of players and coaches. The stares were mostly blank. Westminster lost just five times this season, and two of those occured here in Columbia. The game was never close. "We are disappointed to say the least. We played much better than this during the year. We will …
