Local Teams Make Strong Showings At Holiday Hoops Tournaments All Over The City

John Burroughs boys, Ladue girls, and MICDS girls all were perfect over the break, and will head into the new year with sparkling new tournament titles.

Now that the holiday high school hoops season is over, and most teams have completed the 2012 portion of their schedules, it's time to take a quick look back at what the eight Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette area teams did during the break. Just about everybody played in some type of holiday hoops event or tournament, with three of the local teams going perfect run and winning the tournament they were playing in. The most surprising of the tournament championship wins was turned in by the girls from Ladue High, who pulled off one of the great upsets of the first half of the season, by knocking off previously unbeaten and No. 8 ranked Ritenour High, last Friday afternoon in the championship game of the first ever Ritenour Holiday Tournament. Patch High School Hoops Roundup: JBS Boys, St. Joe Girls Remain Unbeaten Heading Into Holiday Break

An inside look at what went down this week in local high school basketball, along with a look at what's coming up next week.

As the Missouri high school basketball season passes the quarter pole, two things have become crystal clear. The John Burroughs boys team is really good. And so is the St. Joseph's Academy girls team. Those points have been driven home emphatically, as both teams have begun the new season with unblemished records. The JBS boys are 7-0, following a sensational 56-45 win over O'Fallon Christian at the Terrell Ramey/Midwest Showdown Shootout at Lindenwood University last Saturday. That victory capped an incredible week for the Bombers, who won all three games they played, adding in triumphs over Brentwood (65-31, back on December 10) and Clayton (60-59 on Decmeber 13). Senior guard Foye Oluokun has been stuffing the stat sheet all year for …

Patch High School Hoops Roundup: Two Weeks In, And The Action Is Already Getting Good

An inside look at what went down this week in local high school basketball, along with a look at what's coming up next week.

The Missouri high school basketball season in barely two weeks old, and with red-hot starts by the Ladue boys, St. Joe girls, and both John Burroughs teams, the 2012-2013 campaign is shaping up like a mighty fine year on the hardwood for the local teams. The team that's looked the best two weeks in -- and it's really no surprise -- is the St. Joseph's Academy girls, who are 3-0, with three 30-point wins this season. The most impressive win might've come on Tuesday, when the Angels, ranked No. 2 in the city in most local girls basketball polls, dismantled third-ranked Ursuline Academy by the score of 74-44. The Bears are a really good team, but they were just no match for a St. Joe squad that got 20 points, 16 rebounds, and eight blocks …

Representatives from all five Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette-area high school's made this week's Athlete of the Week candidate list. Fans can vote for a winner through 5 p.m. Thursday.

We took a week off from the Patch MVP voting to honor or Male and Female Patch MVPs of the Fall (Ezekiel Elliott of John Burroughs football and Natalie Gower of St. Joe volleyball). But it's time to bring back to weekly battle royale, as we ask fans to vote for their favorite local Athlete of the Week. Once again, we've nominated deserving representatives from all five local high schools, and we've opened up the voting to let the fans tell us, who should get the nod. Our friends over at Villa Duchesne have made this award all their own this month, by making sure each of our November votes went to the Saints' nominee. This week's vote marks the last time anybody from Ladue, John Burroughs, St. Joe, or MICDS will get a chance to keep Villa …

Villa Duchesne Girls Basketball Will Be New-Look Squad In '12-'13

Saints lose seven seniors from last year, but believe new team chemistry will keep team on winning track.

A fairly humorous moment occurred at Villa Duchesne girls basketball practice recently, when head coach Jane Ellen Kuenzle tried to name all the players on her team off the top of her head. The coach tried as best she could to remember everybody on the roster, and even named several players twice, but even a veteran coach like Kuenzle couldn't remember all the new names on her team without taking a look around Villa's beautiful Kenefick Gymnasium to remind her who was actually on the team this year. "We have a lot of new girls up on varsity this year," Kuenzle said. "I think we've only got four girls coming back that have played for me before, and one of them was injured last year. So, this team is a whole lot different than last year." …

Patch MVP: Three In A Row For Villa, as Golfer Morgan Gast Wins In A Landslide

Junior three-sport standout took ninth at Class 1 state golf tournament, helping the Saints finish second overall as a team.

Well the voters seem to love Villa Duchesne, because this is the third straight week that a Villa student-athlete has won our Patch MVP Athlete of the Week award. Field hockey star Maggie Grzeskoviak was the first, then cross country phenom Hannah Deines made it two in a row. And now, thanks to a landslide victory in the voting, golfer Morgan Gast is this week's Patch MVP of the Week. The Villa Duchesne junior is a three-sport standout for the Saints, who also plays basketball and soccer. But it was her performance on the links this season that earned her a Patch MVP nomination this week. And Gast was at her best in the biggest tournament of the year -- the Class 1 state meet at the Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield, MO, -- …
