Josh Robinson scorches the nets for 30, but Rams beat the Dragons 57-39
First rule of basketball: Don’t lose the game going into the District playoffs. MICDS coach Matt Hixenbaugh would agree with that axiom. “It’s good to have a solid victory over a good player and a well coached team,” said Hixenbaugh just after his Rams polished off St. Mary’s in the final regular game of the season. This was redemption. The Dragons beat MICDS in the Rams Christmas tournament December 27, 63-59. Behind senior Trey Pettus’ red-hot shooting of 19 points, MICDS beat visiting St. Mary’s Saturday, 57-39. Ironically, both teams finish the regular season with identical 12-13 records. Each will have to win a first-round district contest just to draw to .500. The Rams came out firing with a 6-0 top-of-the-game start. St. Mary’s …

Wildcats outscore Rams 19-9 in final period to turn close game into an easy fourth quarter win.
TOWN AND COUNTRY -- After falling behind by as many as 14 points early in the second quarter, the MICDS boys basketball staged a terrific comeback to tie Friday's Metro League game against Westminster Christian Academy. Unfortunately for the Rams, a tie was as close to the lead as they would get, as Westminster played an almost perfect fourth quarter to get the lead back and eventually pull away for a 60-48 victory over MICDS. "I think we kind of worked so hard to get back in it, that we didn't have a lot of energy left to play like we need to in that fourth quarter," MICDS head coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. "And you have to give (Westminster) credit too. They played really well against us." Three Wildcat players scored in double figures, …

Senior point guard had 22 points and led a furious fourth-quarter charge, as Rams rallied to defeat Crusaders 44-41 in a critical Metro League hoops contest.
ST. LOUIS -- For much of the night on Tuesday, beginning with a four-point first quarter and a dismally cold-shooting first half, the MICDS boys basketball team couldn’t do much right in its hugely important Metro League matchup against rival Lutheran North High. Fortunately for the Rams though, the Crusaders weren’t playing a whole lot better, and only held a 33-27 lead going into the fourth quarter. That’s when MICDS senior Trey Pettus took over, playing tremendous defense on Lutheran North scoring machine Anthony Virdure, and finishing with a game-high 22 points of his own, to lead the Rams to a phenomenal fourth quarter comeback, which produced a 44-41 win on the road. Junior forward Robin Thompson, who had just three points on the …

Bombers' and Rams' boys and girls will begin the night with double-dip at McDonnell, while No. 7 Ladue hopes to play giant-killer against No. 2 CBC.
The first big night of the high school hoops season comes tonight, with a trio of big ballgames featuring some of the best teams from the Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette area. On a city-wide scale, most eyes will be trained on the championship game of the DC Wilcutt Tournament out at CBC High School in Town and Country, where the Ladue High boys will take on the No. 2-ranked CBC Cadets at 8 p.m. CBC was the area's preseason No. 1, with at least three top college prospects on their roster, including 6'7 swingman Jordan Barnett, 6'6 power forward Ray Doby, and 6'6 shooting guard Patrick McCaw. The Cadets lost their No. 1 ranking after falling in the championship game of the Meramec Tournament to Hazelwood Central back on December 30. Since then, …

Senior Trey Pettus scores game-high 21 points to keep Rams in it, but late free throw gives Wildcats just enough to squeak by.
After losing three close ballgames in the first three weeks of the season, MICDS boys basketball coach Matt Hixenbaugh felt like the win his Rams got at the buzzer on a trip to Nashville a couple weeks ago, might finally be the one to get the Rams over the hump. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way last Saturday evening, when MICDS hosted Westminster Christian Academy in the first round of the 2012 MICDS Boys Holiday Invitational Tournament. The Rams trailed from very early on, and fell behind by as many as 12 points at one juncture. But the tournament hosts nearly rallied all the way back, getting to within two points in the final seconds. But a clutch free throw by Westminster's Jack Dohr gave the No. 6-ranked Wildcats just enough …

Rams were 15-9 last year, but went 9-1 in league games to win the conference, before bowing out of playoffs in district semifinals.
Looking back on the 2011-2012 boys basketball season, and one thing stands out. The MICDS Rams probably pulled off the surprise of the season, by winning the Metro League conference championship. With rivals Lutheran North and John Burroughs both boasting star-studded rosters, hardly anyone would've guessed (without already knowing) that it was MICDS that won the conference title last year. "I think some people probably missed that," MICDS head coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. "But yeah, we had a good run. We beat Lutheran North twice in two close ballgames. We don't really set out to win conference titles, but it is nice to get that reward for all the hard work we put into it." And the Rams did it as a true "team", with several players …
