Newcomer defeats candidate from Olivette by 236 votes.
Sue Meredith of Creve Coeur, a former member of the Ritenour School District Board of Education defeated Tracy McCreery of Olivette in the Democratic party primary for the newly-formed 71st Missouri House of Representatives district. Meredith received 1,422 votes (52.52 percent) while McCreery wound up with 1,186 votes (45.48 percent). Patch was unable to reach Meredith for the winners remarks. So far with a handful of absentee ballots, both Olivette Propositions are passing.
As of 9 p.m., just a handful of absentee ballots have been reported so far in St. Louis County. In the Olivette two-part referndum on Public Safety and Parks; "S" for safety is passing (109 votes, 66 percent) to 56 votes (34 percent). Traditionally all of the votes will be counted close to or by 10 p.m. In the Parks decision, the yes votes have the edge 93 votes (56 percent) to 71 no votes (34) percent. It takes 4-7th approval for both bond issues to pass. In the state representative races, in District 71, Tracy McCreery, incumbent, Olivette leads with 106 absentee votes counted (51 percent) to 101 votes for Sue Meredith, unincorporated St. Louis County, (49 percent). One year after a special election that saw Tracy McCreery obtain a seat in the Missouri House of Representatives, she hopes voters will choose her for a second term. McCreery is running to represent the newly redistricted District 71. She previously represented District 83, which included Olivette, Overland and a portion of University City. She resides in Olivette. The new District 71 encompasses portions of Maryland Heights, Creve Coeur, Olivette and unincorporated St. Louis County. She said District 71 is quite diverse. Two candidates are vying for the 71st Legislative District Democratic nomination this election season. Representative Tracy McCreery, who currently represents of the 83rd District as an independent, and former Ritenour School Board member Sue Meredith hope to be elected to a two year stint in Jefferson City. McCreery lives in Olivette. State officials created the 71st legislative district during the 2011 redistricting process. It includes portions of Maryland Heights, Creve Coeur, Olivette and unincorporated St. Louis County. Three contenders fight it out for vacant House seat in Olivette, Overland and a slice of University City.
Although several attempts were made, we were not able to contact Jeff O’ Connell for an interview and although we spoke to Patrick Brennan and sent him an email invitation for an interview, he declined our offer for an interview. Governor Jay Nixon scheduled a special election for November 8 to fill a Missouri State Representative seat in the 83rd District. It is the only item on the ballot. Democrat, Jake Zimmerman was elected in April as St. Louis County assessor which left the seat in the House of Representatives vacant. The 83rd District takes in parts of the communities of Olivette, University City and Overland.
