Pete's Blog: Super Bowl XLV from Ozzie's: Fourth Quarter and Post-game

Live blog from Ozzie's, where Pittsburgh fans are converging to watch the big game.

-That Rashard Mendenhall fumble is a huge blow to momentum, and “Go Pack Go” fills the air waves again. This game is unbelievably tense. Biggest stage, and one quarter to go. Aaron Rodgers needs to ask himself, WWTBD? Better known in New England as, What would Tom Brady do? -Aaron Rodgers officially answered the call, shaking off some bad throws to throw a strike to Jordy Nelson, who gets inside the five yard line. Do or die time for Steelers, they need to hold Green Bay to a field goal. -And they don’t. Touchdown Greg Jennings, that could be the game. The fans downstairs are going through beers at a rapid rate following that score. Same story upstairs, but the beers are a product of nervous energy. Either way, Ozzie’s wins. -Pittsburgh’s …

Pete's Blog: Super Bowl XLV from Ozzie's: Third Quarter

Live blog from Ozzie's, where Pittsburgh fans are converging to watch the big game.

-The Steelers need a stop to start this third quarter; any type of score will decimate the momentum from their TD at the end of the first half. -It’s official, the talking baby commercial is my favorite, and judging by laughter, I’m not alone. -Mendenhall has the run game going strong, and the Steelers are back in business after a stop to start the half, and some first downs. The upstairs is going crazy with each big play. -Mendenhall TD causes faux earthquake downstairs. 21-17 Packers, and it looks like the Steelers have all the momentum. -Ozzie’s is going nuts. Steelers fans walking from upstairs are screaming on their way out for a cigarette, and Packers fans don’t seem to have any answer. Green Bay needs some life. -Ozzie’s owner …

Well, so much for the Steelers. That two point conversion was pretty sweet though.   more ›

Pete's Blog: Super Bowl XLV from Ozzie's: First Quarter

Live blog from Ozzie's, where Pittsburgh fans are converging to watch the big game.

-The crowd is massive here, at least 150 Steelers fans upstairs, and another 150-200 downstairs. It’s a sea of black and gold on the second floor, with big screens, and tons of adults as well as families decked out in their Steeler gear. -Christina Aguilera’s rendition of Star Spangled Banner just fired up the bar. Yeah, she oversang it, but we all knew she’d hold that last “Brave” for 10 seconds, and it didn’t matter. Good job on her end. -Steelers start with it, and don’t impress. The three-and-out doesn’t phase the upstairs though. Feels like we’re in the bleachers at Heinze Field, with chanting and stomping of feet. ‘Stomp, Stomp’ “DEFENSE!”. -My neighbors are Sharea, Martinique and Keta, and they are residents of North St. Louis who …

Pete's Blog: Super Bowl XLV from Ozzie's

Live blog from Ozzie's, where Pittsburgh fans are converging to watch the big game.

Ozzie's on Washington Avenue is the place to be in St. Louis for the Super Bowl. The pre-game festivities feature free brats, cheap beers, and the ability to sign up for a raffle sponsored by the bar.  The sports bar will basically be a makeshift Pittsburgh embassy in St. Louis, as owner Roberto Gallordo said he is expecting up to 150 Steeler fans in their upstairs room. I've been told that come game time, the first floor of the bar will be sound like a war zone with foot stomping accompanying each big play made by Pittsburgh. It goes without saying, but Green Bay fans should steer clear of the upstairs like the 38th parallel in Korea.  Fans started to file in around 1 p.m. today, and the place was starting to get packed with Black and …
