Wash U Flag at Half Staff for Melanie Michailidis

The post-doctoral fellow was killed in a car accident this weekend.

Flags at Washington University were lowered to half staff Monday to honor Melanie Michailidis, a post-doctoral fellow killed in a car accident Friday night in Ladue. University officials have no information yet on a memoral service for the Islamic art expert.  Michailidis was the Korff Post-doctoral Fellow in Islamic Art in the Department of Art History and Archaeology, in Arts & Sciences, at Washington University. She held a BA from the University of Tennessee, and an MA from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London, where she began her studies in Islamic Art. In 2007, she earned a PhD in Islamic art and architecture from MIT, where she specialized in monumental funerary architecture in Iran and Central Asia …

Update: Wash U Issues Statement on Death of Melanie Michailidis

The post-doctoral fellow was killed in a car accident Friday night in Ladue.

On Saturday afternoon, Washington University issued a statement on the death of Dr. Melanie Michailidis, who was killed in a car accident Friday night in Ladue.  See our previous story: Washington University Faculty Member Killed In Ladue Car Accident The statement from the University reads: The Washington University community is saddened to learn of the sudden and accidental death of Melanie Michailidis, PhD, who was in the second year of a three-year post-doctoral fellowship with the university’s Department of Art History and Archaeology, in Arts & Sciences, and who had a joint appointment with the St. Louis Art Museum. RIP, Professor. None of the stories about the crash point out that passing is NOT allowed on Ladue Road, which is a two-lane road that is quite narrow, winding and hilly! Another report quoted police as saying the impatient, 25 yr old driver of the illegally passing car was doing about 100 miles an hour! If this is true, Dr. Michailidis and her passenger were senselessly murdered. A heartbreaking…   more ›

Nordstrom Grand Opening Gala Benefits St. Louis Organizations

The Wednesday event raised more than $110,000 for the Center of Creative Arts, the Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis, the Missouri Botanical Garden and the St. Louis Art Museum.

On Wednesday evening, hundreds of people flocked to Nordstrom department store, the latest addition to the Saint Louis Galleria, for its Grand Opening Gala. The store opens Friday morning in Richmond Heights. The event raised more than $110,000 for four St. Louis-area organizations: the Center of Creative Arts (COCA), the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM), the Missouri Botanical Garden and the St. Louis Art Museum. When asked what brought them to the night's festivities, most attendees responded with a simple, one-word answer: Nordstrom. "We've been Nordstrom card holders since 1998," said Bruce Hartung of Richmond Heights, who attended the gala with his wife. "It astounded me that it's been that long."
