Rockhurst Defeats De Smet Jesuit in Coaches vs Cancer Shootout

First meeting of the cross-state rivals since the state tournament in 2000.

A nine point loss (75-66) was not quite what Kevin Poelker and his De Smet Jesuit Spartans had in mind, facing rival Rockhurst of Kansas City in the Coaches vs Cancer Shootout at the Scottrade Center today. The two schools last met in Columbia in the state semifinals with DeS met winning in double overtime 14 years ago. The State Line Road boys had other plans. "A win sure means a nicer bus ride home," said the Hawklettes coach Mark Nussbaum. "After the first few possessions, I think we did a nice job of putting some different defenses on them," said Nussbaum. After Momentous Game Against SLUH, MICDS Water Polo Falls to DeSmet 13-8

In the Lindbergh Invitational Tournament, DeSmet takes an early lead with Andrew Diemer leading his team in goals; MICDS never recovers

There are many qualified teams playing in the 2011 Lindbergh Water Polo Invitational, and MICDS (now 3-3 in league and 14-9 overall) is no exception. Assistant Coach Tom Milford said the Rams played “probably their best game of the year” Saturday morning against Saint Louis University High School (7-0, 22-1). Tied until the end of the game, SLUH ultimately came out ahead to win 6-4, but the MICDS coach was proud of the way his team played.  But MICDS could not keep the momentum going. The second of their three games on Saturday, played against DeSmet (4-3, 27-6), was a tough one for the Rams. They played well, but could not keep pace with DeSmet, falling 13-8 to the Spartans.
