Developers Go Public With Sports Plans for Olivette's Warson Park

Jay Williamson & Joe Bannister want to bring ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey to 25 acres of unused space.

Jay Williamson, graduate of John Burroughs and Ladue resident returned from the PGA golf tour a year ago for several reasons. He’s spent 24 years playing professional golf, some 15 on the PGA tour. Now, it was time to spend more time with the family with three young children; begin a business career and follow another dream he’d been working on for some time. Williamson, and business partner Joe Bannister of Webster Groves have designs on bringing indoor ice hockey; outdoor lacrosse, soccer and field hockey to Olivette. The duo eye the 25-acre piece of unused ground at Warson Park in Olivette. From this non-used property would rise a twin ice rink; outdoor artificial multi purpose use fields for the fastest growing sports in America (…

What will happen to the baseball league that plays on the fields now? How will this benefit Olivette? Taxes? Sale of land? Can that land be sold? What will happen to the Community Center? Will Olivette not bring their existing plan (the past bond issue) back to the table...didn't it fail only by a few points? Will Olivette have any input in the design? What does a "land swap" (involving space in …   more ›

Burroughs Falls 1-Nil in Own Tourney: Trinity Will Take It

Gubicya sisters combined for the only goal of the game contested in the light rain.

Burroughs and Trinity Catholic were locked in a soccer game in a light rain Saturday that could have gone either way. At the 70:50 mark of the game on the artificial turf at Burroughs, the Gubicya sisters of Trinity made the win happen. Older sister Julia took a perfectly centered corner kick from Sam Coleman, headed it to her younger sister Melanie, a freshman who flicked it in past a startled Evie Ogelsby, freshman keeper for Burroughs for the initial goal and the game-winner. More game photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. “That was probably one of our only corner kick goals of the season to be honest with you.” said 45-year coaching veteran Vince Drake. “It was set up that way, and we did it on the fly. It was a semi-designed …

Burroughs Finishes Third in Own Soccer Tournament

Guess who blanked the Bombers in a drizzle Saturday?

It took 70 minutes to break a scoreless tie, but the Trinity Titans got a goal on a flicked shot by Melanie Gubicya to shutout the Burroughs Bombers 1-nil in the Saturday round-robin game of the annual Ray Beckman tournament at Burroughs. The winning goal was picture perfect. Julia Gubicya, Melanie's older sister got the inbounds ball and headed it to Melanie. The play got started with a perfect corner kick form Sam Coleman. "That was a good shot and a good win," said Vince Drake, Titans coach who has been involved coaching boys and girls soccer, now for 45 years. This is a game that could have gone either way. Burroughs freshman keeper Evie Ogelsby allowed just one goal in the game. The other two teams in the round robin this week were St…

Kaitlin Springer Puts a Spring in Villa Soccer's Step

Guess who scored the game-winner over the visiting Principia Panthers?

Kaitlin Springer is mostly any coaches’ dream come true. Especially for Tim Twellman at Villa Duchesne. Talented, smart, coachable and approachable, quiet but introspective, this five-foot attacker is a giant for the Saints’ soccer program. Springer leads the Saints in points this year, 5 goals, 1 assist for 11 points; she scored the game-winning-goal at 64:34 of the match with Principia at home Tuesday. That turned out to be the only score in a close-quartered match. Sydney Miller, junior goal keeper recorded the shutout, and had the only assist in the game. Miller fired a perfect shot down the field midway into the second stanza and Springer got it on the bounce and one-timed a rocket shot past Panthers’ keeper Jessica Clouse. “Those …

Villa Makes 1 Goal Stand Up For a Win Over Principia

Hear from the coach; hear from Kaitlin Springer about her game-winning-goal on Thursday.

Not often does the goal keeper get an assist in soccer. "But it happens sometimes," beamed Villa Duchesne's senior forward Kaitlin Springer. At the 64:34 point of the game, Springer got a bounding ball from goal keeper Sydney Miller, perfectly placed and not touched, and one-timed it past Principia keeper Jessica Clouse for the victory. Turns out this was the game-winning-goal and the only goal in a 1-0 blanking of the visiting Panthers. With that, Villa climbed over .500, upping the weather shortened season with a 5-4-2 record. The Saints will travel to Clayton Monday for a non league game. They host Whitfield today at 4:15. Both Springer and her coach Tim Twellman pronounced this a well-earned victory over a fiesty underdogged Principia …

Leads the defense on a 10-2 team; top rated in the area.

Nina Simon: We are off to a great start.  We play a really difficult schedule and I feel like we are really starting to play well at the right time.   We have great coaching and are really coming together as a team with everyone contributing. MICDS Soccer Scoring Machine Keeps on Rolling

Rams beat Burroughs 4-0 for 9th consecutive win this season.

Editors note: The Rams won at St. Charles West late Fridaym running the record to 10-1. Klasey Medelberg scored 2 goals in the win. The MICDS soccer team has won all 9 games this season (going into Friday’s road match at St. Charles West). The Rams are looking a little road weary right now. Coaches tend to over schedule the early season, knowing weather will cancel some games. Though temperatures have been downright frigid, and skies overcast, the Rams have played them all. More game photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. They are ending a four game schedule this week and looking forward to a weekend breather. Tuesday, Lutheran South comes calling. Thursday, Claire Ringenberg wound up scoring twice (numbers 5 and 6 this season), …

Homecoming of Sorts Turns Into a 2-0 Win For Westminster at Ladue

The turf on the West Ladue Campus used to be the Wildcats home base.

For Westminster soccer, the game against Ladue Friday was like a homecoming. Only the homecoming was on the road. Westminster returned to play Ladue at the new West Campus facility. Up until a year ago, that was the home to Westminster Christian Academy. The Wildcats used the return occasion to put a 2-0 shutout on the high-flying Rams. A scoreless first half, played in cold, blustery bone-chilling 40 degrees turned into a second-half scoring bonanza for Westminster. Courtney McGhee scored the go-ahead and game winning goal with an assist from Caroline Moore. Also in the second half, a header by Charisse Williams, off a corner kick from Moore was a thing of beauty. She stepped in on goal keeper Fran Shannon to score and pretty much put the…
