Villa Makes 1 Goal Stand Up For a Win Over Principia

Hear from the coach; hear from Kaitlin Springer about her game-winning-goal on Thursday.

Not often does the goal keeper get an assist in soccer. "But it happens sometimes," beamed Villa Duchesne's senior forward Kaitlin Springer. At the 64:34 point of the game, Springer got a bounding ball from goal keeper Sydney Miller, perfectly placed and not touched, and one-timed it past Principia keeper Jessica Clouse for the victory. Turns out this was the game-winning-goal and the only goal in a 1-0 blanking of the visiting Panthers. With that, Villa climbed over .500, upping the weather shortened season with a 5-4-2 record. The Saints will travel to Clayton Monday for a non league game. They host Whitfield today at 4:15. Both Springer and her coach Tim Twellman pronounced this a well-earned victory over a fiesty underdogged Principia …

MICDS Reaches District Finals With Convincing Win Over Villa Duchesne

Taylor Baur leads the way with 16; Rams win 23rd game of the year, 52-14.

When a team has quarters of 2, 5, 3 and 4, they hardly can expect to win a game. Unfortunately, that was the fate of Villa Duchesne in the semifinals of the Class 4, District 6 basketball playoffs at Clayton. MICDS polished off the Saints easily, 52-14 in another clock-shortened finish. MICDS improved its record to 23-2, and meets the winner of Westminster Christian Academy/Visitation Academy for the championship game Thursday at 6 p.m. The game was a look ahead to the future of Rams basketball. Freshman Taylor Baur had 16 points to lead all scorers. Though 8 players scored for MICDS, no one else was in double figures. The Rams opened up with a 16-2 first quarter lead and had a commanding lead of 25-7 at the halftime break. Sophomore Liz …

Villa Senior Accepts Her Medical Condition With Grace & Dignity

Laura Collins has lost all of her hair, and everyone is fine with that.

Just look down the bench of the Villa Duchesne basketball team, and you will readily see one player with a shaved head. That’s not hard to notice on a girls’ team. The first thoughts are: how can this player be strong enough to be playing with cancer? Thank God it’s not cancer. Laura Collins, 18, senior suffers from a non-curable medical condition called Alopecia areata. This is a rare condition that causes round patches of hair loss and can lead to total hair loss. Collins, who was born in St. Louis began losing her hair to AA at age 13 while the family was living in Salt Lake City. “In the 7th grade, five years ago, I lost all my hair. It all grew back and then it fell out again. Over that summer, it started to grow back again,” she said…

Villa's Volleyball Road Show Comes Home For a Best of Five-Set Victory

Saints drop two sets then win three over sister school Duchesne Academy of Omaha.

The Villa Duchesne volleyball team has become a road show of sorts. Every other year, the Saints visit their sister school, Duchesne Academy in Omaha. Next Oct. 19, they have been invited to the prestigious Aquinas tournament in Kansas City, joining powerful St. Joseph’s Academy, Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, KS), St. Teresa’s Academy of KC and others on the guest list. What the Saints almost became Saturday was road kill. Left for nearly dead, after dropping to sets to Duchesne Academy 25-15 and 25-22, they roared back and defeated the Nebraskan's with scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 15-7 in a five-set match. See lots more game action photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. High school rules call for first to 15 in the fifth set tie …

Villa Beats John Burroughs in Volleyball in Two Quick Sets

Young Bombers tested the Saints in spurts during the match.

Villa’s volleyball coach Shane Weber is showing his team the beef. He purposely gave the Saints a rugged schedule this year to prep for a difficult playoff season. One year ago, the Saints celebrated their first state Class 3 volleyball title at the Show Me Center on the campus of Southeast Missouri State over Thanksgiving. There’s no resting on their laurels for this team. See more pictures on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook Page. The Saints made fairly quick work of host John Burroughs Thursday night, sending the Bombers out the door to do home work, 25-14 and 25-13. For the record, Casie Tomlinson’s youngish Bombers put up a spirited opposition. More on that later. But that front line, comprised of Meghan Donovan, Marisa Drevenak, Maggie …

Villa Volleyball Opens Season With Two-Set Win Over MICDS

Emily Kellerhals, the Libero digs in for the Saints.

The role of the Libero on a volleyball team is unique. The Libero roams the backline primarily, digging out a lot of low shots and setting up the forwards and centers. Senior captain Emily Kellerhals plays that role for Villa Duchesne with great distinction. Kellerhals and her teammates played a season-opening spirited match, defeating visiting MICDS 25-17 and 25-22 to open play in the 2012 season Thursday night. Kellerhals was picking up floor burns, scrambling all over the home court at Villa. She sparked her teammates to several comebacks. The second set was tied nine times before the Saints pulled away for the game winner. “I have no idea how many saves I made out there. I just play to play. I was on the floor a lot I do know,” said …

Villa Duchesne Dismantles Burroughs on Senior Day

Saints' field hockey team heads to the playoffs with 19-3-0 record.

It was the last home game of the year and senior day for the Villa Duchesne field hockey team. A glorious fall harvest day was splashed in the glow of late fall sunlight. Parents joined 13 seniors for their last hurrah, the girls got flowers and silly crowns, heard words of kindness and praise from their new coach Vivi Keefer then went out and knocked the stuffings out of the defending Midwest Champs, the John Burroughs Bombers, 3-0. It was that kind of day from start to finish.  Keefer is very proud of her girls. They played up to and beyond her expectations and they are primed for a run for the roses starting Saturday. Teams will populate the Soccer Park in Fenton from early morning on. The game was tight checking from early on until …
