Mizzou Celebrates 100th Homecoming in Grand Style

Alum's flock back by the thousands to see Tigers trample Iowa State. 52-17.

Although disputed by others, Missouri University lays claim to be the innovator of homecoming, one of the strongest traditions that remains in the college sports world today. Word is, Chester Brewer, director of athletics at Mizzou wanted to boost the crowd on grassy Rollins Field so he invited graduates to "come home" in 1911. A huge crowd of 9,000 packed the wooden bleachers to see the Tigers battle to a 3-3 tie. A tradition was born. Organizers were concerned about enough housing for their guests. Columbians opened their homes and boarding houses and the mystery was solved. This Saturday, on a glorious sun drenched day, Faurot Field tied the records attendance with 71,004 to witness the route of Iowa State, 52-14. The homecoming …
