Burroughs Heads the Pack of Local Teams at the State Swim Meet This Weekend

Freshman Maddie Wessell has the top times in the area in 3 events. MICDS looks to be strong in the relays along with St. Joe.

Local swimming has its ebbs and flow. Last year with Morgan Mullenix and Bentley Boldt representing Villa Duchesne and with Annie Goessling piling up the points for MICDS, both teams had top 10 finishes. That possibly won't be the case this year. All of the local teams are rebuilding. Some have just one qualifier. One team showing marked improvement is John Burroughs, much in part to sensational freshman Maddie Wessell. The Bombers just might crash the leader board for team scores this time. Here’s how the locals are shaping up for the semifinals Friday and the championship of the annual state tournament at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters Saturday. John Burroughs For the first time in eons, the Bombers will be a possible top-10 contender. And …

Nothing Quite Like The Highly Competitive Sport Of Girls' Swimming

Nothing left behind on the pool deck at the Rec Plex in St. Peter's.

My introduction to competitive swimming goes back to the 1984 Olympics. I was lucky enough to cover those games for KMOX Radio and the Suburban Journals in Los Angeles. Swimming was outdoors at the McDonald’s complex at the University of Southern California. They literally dropped a temporary stadium onto the campus, across the street from the Coliseum. Days after the games ended, the stadium was gone forever. Stars like Rowdy Gaines, Pablo Morales, Mary T. Meagher, Tracey Caulkins and Dana Torres established the U.S. as the greatest team in international competition in a very long time. In 1987, the Pan American games were held in Indianapolis. Barbara Barber of Kirkwood had four daughters in Kirkwood schools and by necessity, operated …

St. Joe, MICDS Have Startling Results At State Swim Championships

Rams take third; St. Joe stuns the field with title in the 200 freestyle relay.

The 37th annual state swim meet is in the history books, and area teams had their golden moments. Mary Institute Country Day School had its best finish since the 2009 season when they finished fourth. The Rams swam to a third-place team finish with 160 points. Columbia Rock Bridge harvested the gold with 213 points; Springfield Glendale was second with 182. The other big story came in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The St. Joe Angels came from out of nowhere to nail down the championship with a time of 1:38.22. Second was Glendale in 1:38.53. The MICDS Rams piled up a breast stroke title by senior Annie Goessling and some strong relay performances for the third-place finish. There were smiles all around. The Angel relay team, Jenna Osterholt…

The 37th Annual Swim Championships To Be Decided Later Today

Springfield Glendale, Columbia Rock Bridge look to dominate the top spots.

The champions of the 37th annual swim championships will be determined starting today at 3 p.m. at the Rec Plex in St. Peters. A new champion will be crowned. It is not likely the girls of Parkway West will repeat this time around. No official points are kept in this wall to wall action semifinals. Steve Boyce of Springfield Glendale is keeping his own unofficial tally. “I believe its us or Columbia Rock Bridge,” he said. Any hopes of Villa Duchesne jumping from a tie for sixth last year faded in the last event of the night. In explicably, the swimming Saints faded badly in the final 400 freestyle relay, something they had dominated all year long. They finished in ninth place and one place out of the championship field. They could set a …

Who Will Win The 38th Girls State Swim Championships This Weekend?

Villa, MICDS poised to sweep up the top prize this time around.

Villa Duchesne and MICDS swim coaches are seriously crunching numbers right now, figuring where to place their talent in the semifinals of the 37th annual state meet, starting this Friday at the Rec Plex in St. Peters. There are 12 events in a state meet. Each girl may enter just four events, counting relays. Corinne Murphy at Villa Duchesne and Kristen Kaiser at MICDS know the point-rich relays could be the path to the top spot on the victory stand late Saturday. Right now, Villa leads the entire St. Louis area in the 200 yard freestyle and 400 yard relays. First place there would be worth a whopping 80 point alone. Senior stars Morgan Mullenix of Villa (heading to the University of Denver) and Annie Goessling (heading to the University …

MICDS, Villa, Ladue Perform Well in State Swim Semifinals

Handful of Local Swimmers Expected to Make a Big Splash in State Swim Championships Today.

Later today when the curtain comes down on the 2010-11 girls swim season, MICDS, Villa Duchesne and Ladue are on the cusp of making a significant impact on the final team totals. No official points are kept at the semifinals of the 36th annual renewal of the championships at the Rec Plex in St. Peters, but look for the locals from Ladue-Frontenac to take numerous trips to the medal stand. The championship round gets started at 3 o’clock sharp today. Here’s the outlook from the sidelines. All the area scorers are juniors, therefore next year should be quite a race for gold. MICDS has rebuilt its team under coach Kristen Kaiser after Hallie Stupp took her star power to the University of Arizona. Goessling thinks it would be really cool to …
