Old Warson Ranks 5th in Golf Digest's List of Top Missouri Courses

The magazine released its annual ranking of the top 100 courses nationwide. Six area courses rank in Golf Digest's Missouri Top 10.

Old Warson Country Club in Ladue ranked No. 5 on Golf Digest's list of the top Missouri courses—a list that includes five other St. Louis-area courses in the top 10.  Old Warson did not make Golf Digest's ranking of the top 100 courses nationwide. The St. Louis Business Journal noted that the rankings are important to local course owners. The newspaper quoted Josh Riley, executive director of Gateway PGA, saying the rankings help draw players and "validate their facilities" to build membership at private clubs. "It’s a huge deal if it's for a public course from a marketing standpoint," Riley told the Business Journal. Six St. Louis area private golf clubs made the top 10 list in Missouri: No. 2: Bellerive Country Club No. 4: St. Louis …

Ladue OKs Fence Replacement Along Magnolia Lane

Thursday, look for a complete report of the Ladue Governance committee's recommendations.

For 77 years, the City of Ladue has maintained what has been termed a mostly unstructured form of city government. A City Clerk/Administrator works alongside the Mayor for the purposes of governing the City. That could all change, based on the studies of the Governance Committee, chaired by long-time resident attorney John Sant. The report of the Governance Committee recommends the city revert to a City Manager type of structure and at the same time considering reducing the number of volunteer boards which steers a host of city activities.  Currently, Ladue has some 27 committees, though most meet only on an as-needed basis. Mayor Anthony Bommarito, who is stepping down the end of April looks at it this way. “This is not for me. I’ll be …

Denizens From Ladue Will Cheer Mightily for Cardinals Tonight

Ladue has served as home-base for Cardinals greats down through the ages.

Very best of luck to our beloved Cardinals. Half of Ladue will be in the stands. These are the folks who own the best seats in the house. You will not find any community in the world that has a stronger connection to the St. Louis Cardinals than the Village (City) of Ladue. Case in point. Andrew “Drew” Baur, Alumnus of the Year at Country Day School in 1997 was a lifelong resident of Ladue. The banker, turned team owner, alongside his lifetime pals Bill DeWitt, Jr. and Fred Hanser will be looking from above at his position at first base on the diamond located behind the Pearly Gates tonight. Cigar firmly ensconced between his lips, he will be cheering madly for his beloved Birds. Baur was so crazed about El Birdos, he once marched into the…

Golf Season Rapidly Coming to a Close

A big shout out to Old Warson Pro Rick Ewing; our highly skilled summer adviser.

It seems impossible to state that fall is just around the corner when the heat and humidity is topping 110 degrees. But that's simply the case. Football and soccer have moved to center stage and the golfing season will end sometime around mid-November. We want to give a big shout out to our resident pro Rick Ewing from Old Warson Country Club who gave our readers free tips each week on how to improve their game. We heard from many of these readers on just how detailed and informative Rick's tips were. He's been on the job, helping the local golfers since early this spring. Rick is a very versatile athlete. Formerly, he played high school basketball and golf at Webster Groves then moved onto the college ranks for more golfing education. …

Acceleration is a Very Key Component of Successful Putting

PGA Pro Rick Ewing gives tips each week to improve your overall golf game.

Old Warson's Director of Instruction, Rick Ewing, offers different tips to get your golf game moving in the right direction.  If you'd like to ask Rick a question or book a private lesson (Patch reader exclusive), email him at rickewing@pga.com. Acceleration is the increasing speed at which the club head moves through the ball and is important not only for hitting shots of substantial distance, but also for short putts. In fact, if you find that you’re missing too many short putts, the cause may be failure to accelerate the putter head. Here’s a drill that will help. On the practice putting green, find a hole that will permit you to set up for a flat and straight putt. Place a sand wedge perpendicular to the line of the intended putt so …

Proper Body Allignment Helps to Avoid the Slice

Old Warson Golf Pro Rick Ewing has advice each week to help improve your golf game.

Old Warson's Director of Instruction, Rick Ewing, offers different tips to get your golf game moving in the right direction.  If you'd like to ask Rick a question or book a private lesson (Patch reader exclusive), email him at rickewing@pga.com. Body alignment is one of two key setup elements most frequently changed by amateur golfers (the other is ball position). Because players often associate the alignment of their upper body with the starting direction of the ball off the clubface, they tend to incorrectly alter their alignment for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is to compensate for a chronic pull slice. While the logic of aiming the torso further left to prevent hitting the ball to the right may appear sound at first, …

At Least Three Ways to Fix a Slice

Old Warson Golf Pro Rick Ewing has a unique approach to teaching the game.

There’s only one thing that can cause a slice, and that’s a clubface that’s either open (or opening) at the point of contact. That being said, here are three tips to help you square up the clubface and rid your game of that slice forever. Get A Stronger Grip The clubface tends to return to the ball “open” when the hands are placed on the club in a weak position—that is, turned too far to the left. A correct grip has the hands rotated more to the right. To strengthen your grip, rotate your left hand so that your thumb is positioned to the right of center (two to three knuckles should be visible). The right hand also should be rotated to the right, matching the angle of the left hand. To experiment, turn your hands to the right until the …

Hitting the Driver, Not the 3 Wood

Weekly Tips from Old Warson Director of Instruction Rick Ewing.

Old Warson's Director of Instruction, Rick Ewing, offers different tips to get your golf game moving in the right direction.  If you'd like to ask Rick a question or book a private lesson (Patch reader exclusive), email him at rickewing@pga.com. Sometimes the right choice is the bigger one. Fairway woods have indeed come a long way. I’d actually say that my current fairway is both bigger and longer than a driver was 20 to 30 years ago. And yet, despite the advances in fairway woods, drivers have exploded in size, making them not only bigger, but also enormously longer and more forgiving. So, why not use one as often as you can? If you’re faced with a choice between driver and fairway wood on a tight hole, consider the bigger, more …

Ladue-Frontenac Golf Tips From Rick Ewing

Two Ball Drill, Hitting the Fade Golf Shots.

Old Warson's Director of Instruction, Rick Ewing, offers different tips to get your golf game moving in the right direction.  If you'd like to ask Rick a question or book a private lesson (Patch reader exclusive), email him at rickewing@pga.com. The Two Ball Drill If you don’t know the right way to hit a high-lofted fairway wood or hybrid, look no further than your 6-iron.  That’s right, your 6-iron. High-lofted woods and hybrids actually are designed to strike the ball with a descending blow, not a sweeping or ascending one that you need with a driver. Mentally, this is a tough obstacle to get past, but with this simple drill, you’ll ingrain not only the proper visual, but also the right feel for hitting down on the ball with a club that’…

To Get Ahead, You Need Solid Wedge Shots

Old Warson Golf Pro Rick Ewing Gets Into Proper Wedge Shot Techniques.

Old Warson's Director of Instruction, Rick Ewing, offers different tips to get your golf game moving in the right direction.  If you'd like to ask Rick a question or book a private lesson (Patch reader exclusive), email him at rickewing@pga.com. In this week's video review, Ewing talks about what age to start youngsters with the game of golf and other topics. Becoming a good wedge player means you have to hit consistent shots. Many amateurs struggle with hitting consistent shots from within 125 yards. Sometimes the ball spins; sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it flies straight; other times not so much. Trajectory control becomes tricky too, with some shots flying high and others flying low. Whew, with that many variables, what’s one to do…
