Recruiting Update: Donnie White, Jr. Drawing Attention At Home & On The Trail

The Defensive End/Linebacker is standing out for reasons besides his choice of socks.

De Smet Jesuit's Donnie White, Jr. has already made an impression on college coaches--enough to garner scholarship offers from a handful of Division I programs like Arkansas, Boston, College, New Mexico and Wyoming, among others. He's now in the middle of a stretch which could see that group grow to include the University of Missouri and a number of other schools in the Midwest. Several publications touted his performance--and his pink socks--this past weekend at the Mizzou camp held at his own De Smet campus, and he's parlaying that extra attention to draw eyes to his athletic talents. Read: Overheard in Creve Coeur 'M-I-Z-S-E-C' White told Patch Monday that the Mizzou coaches said he "looked great out there," and that he hoped to hear …

The Passing of Journalist Rick Desloge, the Big Story of the Week

This writer, both memorialized and toasted at his Memorial Service in Forest Park.

No doubt, this was the big story of the week. When they set up 200 chairs at the Jewel Box for Rick Desloge's Celebration of Life, that was hardly enough. A shoulder to shoulder crowd packed every inch of space inside this historic attraction, the location where Rick and Nancy were married 31 years earlier. The memorial service was both a tribute to Rick and a chance to reflect on all the good he did for his family and his community. One praiser after another shared stories and values from his life, including his elder son Rick Jr. This is surely one journalist's passing that will hardly go unnoticed. I’m trying to absorb the shocking news. KMOX Radio just reported that Rick Desloge, age 63, lifetime journalist had died of pancreatic …

Mizzou Views: What Do You Think of the New Football Uniforms?

Are they futuristic, or should we retreat to long-standing tradition?

Some 18,000 faithful got to take a gander at Mizzou's new football duds at this year's spring football game. The players love them. Likely the Big M Varsity letter winners from the 50s and 60s will hate them. Time marches on, and Mizzou will be wearing the latest from Nike in the battle for supremacy in the SEC. Timing could not be more perfect. The important thing is, the incoming freshman are doing hand flips over them. Showing them secretly to 5 star prospect Dorial Green-Beckham didn't hurt one bit. The Tigers unveil their brand new marketing identity. Check this video. The change has done wonders for the Oregon Ducks. Nothing is much different so far at the University of Maryland. Some might be excited, and others might think changing…

St. Joe Golfer Doing Very Well In A Mostly Male Dominated Sport

Megan Davis lands Chick Evans Caddy Scholarship to the University of Missouri.

Excuse Megan Davis, 18, bubbly senior from St. Joseph’s Academy if she seems like a fish swimming up stream. Davis, who went to Ascension Parish Grade School in Chesterfield has been caddying at Meadowbrook Country Club since the ninth grade. She still is a girl in an all boys’ bastion. Her neighbor Tommy, suggested that the two of them go to an informational meeting at Meadowbrook the summer of her eighth-grade year. “The guys at first didn’t like it that I was there. They were a little intimidated,” she recalled clearly, harkening back to the summer of 2009. She is the only girl ever to caddy at Meadowbrook. Members really like her, and often request her services. Her devotion to the game of golf is paying off in spades. She was just …

Psycho Films, The Making of Welcome to Shirley, Ladue Graduates Tell All Part - I

Ladue High School graduates are making professional quality movies with their latest, Welcome to Shirley.

There were many hands that touched Psycho Films’ latest project, Welcome to Shirley. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 150-200 people were involved in some way, no pun intended. At the core, there were six executives, about a dozen actors and as many crew members. Patch had the pleasure of sitting down with five of those core people for an in depth interview. Joe Weil, Director, Paul Brick, Screenwriter, Jake Torchin, Associate Producer, Blake Lawrence, Executive Producer and Mark Holzum, Actor talked about all that it took to make their movie. Now in their first year of college, Weil and Torchin have been making movies separately since middle school. They met while at Ladue High school. Then, they worked on a project in broadcast …

Mizzou Needs a Two Way Starter in the Lineup Like Michael Scherer

This rugged two-way performer at MICDS is the tonic the Tigers really need right now.

Gary Pinkel, Mizzou football coach, are you listening? Next fall, without fail, you need to play new freshman Michael Scherer and probably both ways. I'd be happy to repeat that. Mizzou hasn’t had two-way starters since the 1960s when Andy Russell of Ladue played fullback and linebacker and Texan Johnny Roland started sometimes at runningback and safety. It can be done.  Football is no more physical or demanding today than back in the Dan Devine era, in which, by the way the Tigers were never losing to Kansas State. Saturday’s woeful performance in the other Manhattan only proved the Tigers need to upgrade their talent. Tiny 185 pound backs ran Mizzou’s defense silly. Scherer, who will arrive at Mizzou filled out at least 6-foot-3, 238 …

The final total of votes on the Michael Scherer poll was 68. An overwhelming 63 percent felt he is perfectly qualified to play both offense and defense for the Tigers. I whole heartily agree.   more ›

Ladue's Jehu Chesson Considering Northwestern

Oklahoma State Cowboys were at Ladue's homecoming Saturday.

Three-star wide receiver Jehu Chesson has a top-five list, and Northwestern is in the mix. He is one of the top prospects in the U.S. as rated by MaxPreps. The 6-foot-4 wide receiver from Ladue remains one of the top prospects for football recruiting this fall. Chesson is looking at pass-happy programs like Missouri, Illinois and the Wildcats. Oklahoma State had a recruiter at Saturday's homecoming where Ladue thrashed Affton 48-0. Chesson stars on the Rams basketball team and is a key member of the track team, anchoring several relays. Ladue has run off four straight wins and travels for their first district game Thursday night at Duchense in St. Charles. Chesson has caught 26 passes for 352 yards and just two TDs this season. He averages…

What People are Saying

What People Are Saying

University of Missouri's new basketball coach bringing some baggage.

When University of Missouri Athletic Director Mike Alden hired Frank Haith, basketball coach at the University of Miami, a great hue and cry arose from many Mizzou fans. Most were hoping for a name hire, one who could lead the Tigers to the Final Four. The dust settled after Alden described Haith as a man having “integrity” and “graduating seniors.” Now comes a story that Haith might have connections to a University of Miami booster, Nevin Shapiro, who gave one of Haith's players $10,000 to attend the school.  The buzz spreads far and wide. www.Thequad.blgs.nytimes.com reports that the scandal could have collateral damage at Mizzou unless the investigation can put him in the clear. Gary Parrish at www.cbssports.com said that since Haith …

Students Co-host Ladue High School Blue and White Night

Blue and White night at Ladue Horton Watkins High School gets students fired up for the school year.

Bringing the house down Tuesday night at Ladue High School Blue and White Night were student co-hosts, seniors Jody Peterson and Jehu Chesson. With remarkable confidence and charisma each young host displayed poise and brought a high level of energy to the evening’s festivities. The large number of attendees, approximately one thousand, did not appear to faze the pair; they seamlessly played off of one another’s strengths and personalities to introduce each activity and sports team throughout the night. Standing at 6-foot-4, and cool as a cucumber, Jehu contrasts to petite, bundle-of-energy, Jody. Both are seniors this school year and have lofty goals for life after high school. Peterson, President of Blue Crew, plans to pursue a career in…
