Could it be--Good Bye Columbus; Hello Columbia?

Burroughs Wonder Star Zeke Elliott visits Mizzou just ahead of National Football Signing Day Feb. 12.

Burroughs super-star running back Ezekiel Elliott just returned from a whirlwind 24-hours at Mizzou. All along, his word was he was going to take his talents to Columbus, Ohio and The Ohio State University Buckeyes. Friday night, departing Westminster Christian Academy's gym, Elliott put it this way: "They are still my state school, and I'm going down there to give them a chance." The worm could be turning. Ohio State brought in a last-minute prospect, just in case Zeke bolts for Columbia. The visit went very well. The crowd at the Mizzou Arena for the Vanderbilt game rocked the house with M-I-Z-E-Z-E. The Burroughs back got the message. Both his parents lettered in sports at Mizzou. His dad Elliott played football for the Tigers. USA …

Northwestern (12th). Vandy (17th and Southern Ivy League). Both top schools. If you average the U.S. News rankings for both conferences, The Big 10 average ranking is 61.6 (they were dragged down by Rutgers and Nebraska the only schools ranked out of the top 100). The SEC's average ranking was 86.7. (Five of the schools ranked lower than the top 100). Of course these are overall averages. If you …   more ›

1958: The Last Time Mizzou & Vanderbilt Met in Football

Tigers focused on three consecutive October home games including Alabama Oct. 13.

Sports trivia: When Vanderbilt faces off with Mizzou Saturday night in Columbia (6 p.m. kickoff on Fox Sports Midwest), the team with James Franklin will definitely be the winner. Seems that James Franklin coaches Vandy while James Franklin is Mizzou’s starting quarterback. Don’t worry, they are not related, but something has to give. Mizzou is 3-2 (0-2 in the SEC) coming off a 21-16 road win at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The Commodores were pasted by Georgia 48-3 and sport a 1-3 record (0-2 in the SEC.) Mizzou covets a win with home games coming up in October (13th) with top-ranked Alabama and an Oct. 27 game with Kentucky (home coming). Here comes Vandy This is the first meeting between the schools since Dwight David …

First Road Game, a Major Challenge for the Mizzou Tigers Saturday

Mizzou faces top-10 ranked South Carolina in an SEC showdown.

Mizzou has a football history with Steve Spurrier and his South Carolina Gamecocks. For one, Spurrier was the quarterback in 1966 who almost engineered a Florida comeback in the Mizzou 20-18 win in the Sugar Bowl played that year out-of-doors at Tulane Stadium. Mizzou beat Spurrier and his Gamecocks in the 2005 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, 38-31 and the Tigers beat South Carolina under Jim Carlen in the Hall of Fame Bowl game in 1979, 24-14. Playing in Columbia, SC, will be no walk in the park Saturday. Some 80,000 will be loud and proud for the 2:30 p.m. (C.S.T. kickoff) on CBS. South Carolina is in full stride, heading into this SEC showdown with a perfect 3-0 start. After a shaky 17-13 win over Vanderbilt to open conference play, …

Will Michael Scherer Play for Mizzou in the SEC Home Opener With Georgia?

An injury to senior Will Ebner might just open a middle linebacker spot.

The Mizzou Tigers came out of the 62-10 season-opening win over Southeast Louisiana pretty much unscathed. However an injury to middle linebacker senior Will Ebner might change the prsopects for freshman Michael Scherer of MICDS or Donavin Newsom of Parkway North, another freshman. Likely the two freshman would be slated for a redshirt year and not see duty with the Tigers in 2012. But should often-injured Ebner from Friendswood, TX. not be able to answer the bell for the SEC opener with Georgia Saturday (kickoff 6:30 p.m. C.S.T.) then one of the two freshmen might be called up to fill that position. MICDS coach Josh Smith is not sure. “Michael is dressed out and on the sidelines. They can be redshirted if they don’t get into the games,” …

Mizzou Tigers Ready to Tackle the SEC Conference

Interviews with key players, newcomers on Media Day at Mizzou.

Columbia...These are interviews with key Missouri starters, players from St. Louis and incoming freshmen. Jack Meiners, starting tackle from Chaminade Patch: Are you ready for the season. Jack Meiners: Absolutely. We are working very hard to make it happen. We practice then we spend the rest of the day in the film room watching games. Patch: How is the transition going from the Big 12 to the SEC. Meiners: I don’t think its too bad. There’s just a different style offensively and defensively. There are great teams in the Big 12 and there are great teams in the SEC so we will just have to see. We will have to compete every Saturday and play our “A” game. Patch: Teams like Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and Nebraska and Texas are hardly second …

MICDS' Michael Scherer, Ready to Impact the Mizzou Tigers

Linebacker coach Dave Steckel is busy molding this defensive standout into a top line performer.

Columbia, MO...Look at the two-deep Missouri Tiger football roster and you won’t find Michael Scherer’s name anywhere. Certainly not at linebacker. Andrew Wilson and Will Ebner, two vets for the Missouri Tigers have that wrapped up. But when the Tigers roar onto the turf for a night battle September 1 versus Southeast Louisiana, expect this MICDS grad to be somewhere on the field. He could well be ticketed for the special teams kick off and receiving units. Or, Gary Pinkel’s offense may call for No. 58 to punch it home in short yardage situations. In a day when so many players are specialists: strong side safeties, slot receivers, rovers and the like, Scherer is a throw back all around player who adds so much to both sides of the ball. One…

The Baer Facts

Can You See a Billiken, Mizzou National Title Looming?

Locals earn their spots in the Big Dance with sparkling records this year.

For the first time in the modern era, everyone in my family is happy with the NCAA basketball tournament selections. My son went to Indiana; everyone else graduated from Mizzou. I’ve been a life-long Billiken fan. My brother went to Michigan, and lived across the street from Michigan State. This time, all these schools are in. Everyone’s happy. This field of 68 includes something for everyone. I guess I could bet with my heart or my head. How about a Billiken-Mizzou final game in the West regional in Phoenix? Special congratulations are in order for Rick Majerus and his Billikens who beat Oklahoma, Washington, Boston College, Xavier and other powerful teams this season to earn a berth outright with a sparkling 25-7 record. The only time …
