MICDS Boys Defeat Burroughs In Overtime

Sophomore William Morehead hits a late 3-pointer to send the game to overtime and the Rams win 54-52.

MICDS'  William Morehead scored just three points for the Rams Saturday night in their rivalry game against John Burroughs. But it was the most important three points of the game and the biggest in the sophomore's young career. Morehead hit a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds to play in regulation to tie the game and the Rams went on to a thrilling 54-52 victory over the Bombers before a large and enthusiastic crowd at Washington University. The Rams called a timeout with 9.4 seconds to play in regulation down 43-40. "We spread the floor to see who was open and Mike Scherer made a great pass and William shot it with confidence," MICDS Coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. It was the first shot attempted in the game by Morehead. "Rashad (Lindsay) was the …

MICDS Boys Win in Front of Entire Student Body

The Rams go on a 33-8 run to defeat Hannibal 65-43 Thursday at the Chaifetz Arena.

The entire high school student body at Mary Institue-Country Day School spent Thursday morning at the Chaifetz Arena on the St. Louis University campus. They were treated to quite a show by the Ram boys basketball team. MICDS pulled away in the second half and defeated Hannibal 65-43 in the first game of the Coaches Vs. Cancer Shootout. "This was a special opportunity for all of us to take part in an event like this," MICDS Coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. "Basketball is just a game but cancer is the real world." The basketball game did not start particularly well for the Rams as Hannibal connected on five of its nine 3-point attempts in the first half and led 28-21 when Hixenbaugh called a timeout with 2:08 to play in the half. "We were not …

Coaches vs. Cancer Will Draw Entire MICDS Upper School

MICDS works to raise money for cancer research.

On Jan. 27, some 14 buses will drop off 700 students and faculty members from MICDS at Chaifetz Arena on the campus of Saint Louis University. This is nothing short of a troop movement. MICDS's students and staff will be at Chaifetz in full force to root on the Rams in the opening basketball game of Coaches vs. Cancer. “I doubt if anyone will have that big a group there cheering for their team,” said MICDS' head trainer and event coordinator Stacey Morgan. “We’ve been supporting cancer research going on 10 years, and we’ve raised more than $100,000 for the cause,” Morgan said. Cancer touches many lives today. “One time, we had our entire student body gathered for an assembly in the Danforth Chapel. We asked for anyone who’s had their lives…

Rams Rally

Freshman Rashad Lindsey scores 15 fourth quarter points to lead MICDS to a 59-49 win.

The MICDS boys basketball team was in dire need of a pick-me-up in the fourth quarter of their ABC Conference opener Tuesday at Lutheran South. The Rams trailed 45-40 midway through the quarter and leading scorer Carson Pryor was on the bench after fouling out. It was freshman guard Rashad Lindsey who provided the spark as he scored 15 points in the final quarter as MICDS finished the game on a 19-4 run and escaped with a hard-fought 59-49 victory. "It doesn't matter if you are a senior or a freshman," said Pryor, who scored just six points in about eight minutes of playing time. "Tonight it was Rashad's turn. He really stepped it up when we needed him." Lindsey hit a pair of free throws with 2:57 to play to pull the Rams within a point at…

Above the Rim

Happy Hooping in 2011

Area teams look to improve in the New Year.

With just about half of the regular season under way for area teams, 2011 will bring some interesting matchups and will begin the heart of the conference season. The next few months will be telling for MICDS (4-5), Ladue (4-4) and John Burroughs (3-5) as the teams try to work out some kinks and get prepared for district play in late February. All of the area teams competed in recent holiday tournaments as MICDS and Ladue did battle in the MICDS Holiday Tournament and John Burroughs played in the Chaminade Tournament. Each team had decent showing in their respective tournaments with MICDS and Ladue advancing to the winner's bracket in their tourney while Burroughs fought their way to a consolation championship in their bracket. MICDS hoped …
