Fourth Quarter Surge Pushes Westminster Past MICDS In Boys Hoops

Wildcats outscore Rams 19-9 in final period to turn close game into an easy fourth quarter win.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- After falling behind by as many as 14 points early in the second quarter, the MICDS boys basketball staged a terrific comeback to tie Friday's Metro League game against Westminster Christian Academy. Unfortunately for the Rams, a tie was as close to the lead as they would get, as Westminster played an almost perfect fourth quarter to get the lead back and eventually pull away for a 60-48 victory over MICDS. "I think we kind of worked so hard to get back in it, that we didn't have a lot of energy left to play like we need to in that fourth quarter," MICDS head coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. "And you have to give (Westminster) credit too. They played really well against us." Three Wildcat players scored in double figures, …

Band of Brotherhood Rocks the House for Burroughs at MICDS Friday Night

Foye Oluoken saves best for last as unbeaten Bombers edge MICDS 40-38.

Just kinda seems like John Burroughs basketball has a team divided into types of athletes. There are the slimmer, taller ones who mainly play roundball. Then, there are the more muscular, “band of brotherhood” from the once-beaten football team who can carry  much of the load, just like they did with MICDS Rams gridiron defenders on their backs last fall. The football refugees, Zeke Elliott, Foye Oluokun, Trevor Bain and newcomer Nathan VanSlyke combined for 32 of the Bombers total points, en-route to a thrilling 40-38 win over their rivals and nemesis on “Pink Out Night” in the MICDS gym. Events at this night annually raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Elliott says its just a necessity to play every season on their sprawling …

MICDS Boys Fall Just Short In Rally Attempt Against No. 6 Westminster Christian

Senior Trey Pettus scores game-high 21 points to keep Rams in it, but late free throw gives Wildcats just enough to squeak by.

After losing three close ballgames in the first three weeks of the season, MICDS boys basketball coach Matt Hixenbaugh felt like the win his Rams got at the buzzer on a trip to Nashville a couple weeks ago, might finally be the one to get the Rams over the hump. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way last Saturday evening, when MICDS hosted Westminster Christian Academy in the first round of the 2012 MICDS Boys Holiday Invitational Tournament. The Rams trailed from very early on, and fell behind by as many as 12 points at one juncture. But the tournament hosts nearly rallied all the way back, getting to within two points in the final seconds. But a clutch free throw by Westminster's Jack Dohr gave the No. 6-ranked Wildcats just enough …

Last-Second Loss To Principia Drops MICDS Boys Hoops To 1-5

Frontcourt standouts William Morehead and Robin Thompson had 19 points and 18 points to lead the Rams, but Prin's Joe Colliatie hit a short jumper with 10 seconds left to lift the Panthers to a 53-52 victory.

The beginning of this new boys basketball season has been a bit of a struggle for MICDS and head coach Matt Hixenbaugh. The Rams, who are coming off a 15-9 season last year, which included an undefeated run through Metro League conference play, were expected to be one of the teams to watch this season, with many believing MICDS might be a team that could do some damage once the state playoffs roll around in February and March. But the season hasn't begun that way, with MICDS taking three losses out of four games at the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Washington, IL, back in November, and then adding a fourth loss in its first game against a local team (Clayton High) back on December 4. The MICDS squad was just about desperate for a …

New-look MICDS Hoops Squad Back to Defend Metro League Title

Rams were 15-9 last year, but went 9-1 in league games to win the conference, before bowing out of playoffs in district semifinals.

Looking back on the 2011-2012 boys basketball season, and one thing stands out. The MICDS Rams probably pulled off the surprise of the season, by winning the Metro League conference championship. With rivals Lutheran North and John Burroughs both boasting star-studded rosters, hardly anyone would've guessed (without already knowing) that it was MICDS that won the conference title last year. "I think some people probably missed that," MICDS head coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. "But yeah, we had a good run. We beat Lutheran North twice in two close ballgames. We don't really set out to win conference titles, but it is nice to get that reward for all the hard work we put into it." And the Rams did it as a true "team", with several players …

MICDS Wins League Title 64-48 On Senior Night

Rams win league title. Ready to host and contend district title next week.

Thomas Militello of MICDS has a flair for the dramatic. The two-sport, Dartmouth bound quarterback bombed in a 25 foot three-pointer with 0:00 left on the first half clock, giving the Rams a narrow 29-19 lead. Militello pumped a fist into the air as his teammates raced for the locker room and the break. The Rams trampled visiting Principia 64-48 winning the final ABC title. Next year, Westminster Christian officially enters and the conference will be rebranded into the Metro League. Sophomore Rashad Linsey topped the Rams with 20 points; Millitello had 12 and William Morehead had 12. Joe Colliatie led Prin with 20 points. Steve Hammond scored 15 and Justin Ball 10. This was senior night for Militello, Michael Scherer and Foster Bundy. …

Burroughs still has one league game left at Lutheran North. If they win, they and MICDS will share the ABC league title as they both will have only one league loss.   more ›

Weary Patriots Hold On to Defeat MICDS

Parkway South defeated the Rams 57-51 Thursday at the Coaches Vs. Cancer Shootout at Scottrade Center.

The Parkway South boys basketball team had a seven-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night as the Patriots fell to De Smet 62-46. The Patriots were right back on the court Thursday morning and made sure the losing streak would be stopped at one. MICDS scored the first basket of the game but never led the rest of the way falling to the Patriots 57-51 at the Coaches Vs. Cancer High School Shootout at the Scottrade Center. "I am a little tired right now," said Charlie Bakula, who scored 13 of his game high 16 points in the first half. "I played a game last month at the Family Arena and it was not my best game so it was nice to come here at a big arena and play better." MICDS looked like the tired team in the first half as the Rams managed…

Rams Hold Off Late Bomber Rally

MICDS defeats John Burroughs 48-41 Friday night before an overflow crowd at MICDS.

The setting and final score could not have been any better for MICDS senior Foster Bundy. The guard started the game and finished it as his Rams defeated John Burroughs 48-41 Friday night in the Coaches vs. Cancer Paint It Pink game at MICDS. "This is just awesome," Bundy said. "I was so anxious before the game. It was just a great atmosphere to play in. I know all those guys at Burroughs and have been going to camps with them since I was seven or eight. To beat them in both football and basketball is special. And we have one more game at Washington U. which will be just as big if not bigger." As the score would indicate, it was a defensive struggle through most of the game. The Rams held John Burroughs to single digit points in the first …

Jon Galt appears to be an alum from a while ago, as the new track was first installed in 2006 I believe. I now see "classless" was probably the wrong word to use, rather it should have been "illogical." As I stated before, both schools lost a state championship. It doesn't make much sense to chant about it when you've also done it. Just my opinion. This is also one of the greatest rivalries in MO…   more ›

MICDS Boys Fall to Lutheran North in Quarterfinals of MICDS Tournament

The Ram girls defeat Parkway Central to advance to championship game Friday.

In a game of runs, it was the Lutheran North run at the end of the first half and start of the second half which proved to be the difference in a 66-59 victory over MICDS in the quarterfinals of the MICDS Tournament Wednesday. Lutheran North finished the first half with a 13-0 run and then scored the first nine points of the second half to take an 15-point lead. The Rams came back to make things interesting in the final minutes cutting the Lutheran North lead to six after a 3-pointer by Foster Bundy with just over a minute to play. But Anthony Virdure hit four consecutive free throws in the final minute to seal the deal for Lutheran North, which was the second seed. "The end of the first half and start of the second half was the deciding …

Rashad Lindsey Leads Rams to Win over St. Mary's In Non-League Match

The sophomore guard hits five 3-pointers and scores 25 points in a 60-48 victory at MICDS.

MICDS sophomore guard Rashad Lindsey is traveling to the University of Indiana this weekend to watch the Hoosiers take on the top-ranked team in college basketball, the University of Kentucky. He can only hope to see the kind of shooting display that he and St. Mary's guard Jon Connelly put on Friday night. Connelly hit six 3-pointers and scored 26 points. Lindsey almost matched him point for point as he hit five 3-pointers and had 25 points in leading the Rams to a 60-48 victory at MICDS. "I've worked hard with Coach A.T. (Aaron Thompson) on my shot and he has helped me out a lot," Lindsey said. "My main role is to still get everybody involved and touching the ball, though." The point guard did that with some dandy dishes, several coming …
