Burroughs Heads the Pack of Local Teams at the State Swim Meet This Weekend

Freshman Maddie Wessell has the top times in the area in 3 events. MICDS looks to be strong in the relays along with St. Joe.

Local swimming has its ebbs and flow. Last year with Morgan Mullenix and Bentley Boldt representing Villa Duchesne and with Annie Goessling piling up the points for MICDS, both teams had top 10 finishes. That possibly won't be the case this year. All of the local teams are rebuilding. Some have just one qualifier. One team showing marked improvement is John Burroughs, much in part to sensational freshman Maddie Wessell. The Bombers just might crash the leader board for team scores this time. Here’s how the locals are shaping up for the semifinals Friday and the championship of the annual state tournament at the Rec-Plex in St. Peters Saturday. Burroughs and Viz Both Get Some Wins in the Pool

Host Bombers capture a narrow victory by the score of 96-88.

The Visitation Academy had a pretty good swim at Burroughs Tuesday. The host Bombers narrowly won in a duel meet, 96-88. Senior Mary Murphy won two individual events for Viz while the Bombers were battling a good case of the flu. Steady Morgan Rinder scratched from the meet and went home early. Freshman phnom Maddie Wessell, winners of two individual events (50 free, 25.51) and the 100 free (56.60) and anchor on two-first place relays (200 medley) and 400 free was sub par, health wise too. But first to Murphy. “I thing it was a good meet. I swam my best time of the year,” said the swimmer who used to be on the Parkway Swim Club team. Still, she is not qualified for state in any events and running out of chances. “That’s ok, I was there the…

The Ingenue in the John Burroughs Pool

Freshman Maddie Wessell has already broken six school records and she's just getting going.

The John Burroughs swim team is returning to form, and no one could be happier than coach Leslie Kehr. The future is now for the swiming pool Bombers. Freshman phenom Maddie Wessell has already qualified in six different events for the state meet in February. She came to Burroughs in the 7th grade from St. Simons in South St. Louis County and lives in Mehlville. Her younger brother Jack is a good butterfly swimmer too and hopes to enter Burroughs next. Wessell swims for the Lindbergh FAST aquatics team. She loves to be in the water. “Until I was eight year old, I was afraid of the water. I was just afraid to put my face into the water,” she said. “My mom put me on a swim team. I only swam the backstroke, and eventually I got over my fear…
