The Spartans' ride to Columbia comes up one game short in the Class 5 Title Saturday against the Hawklets.
During De Smet Jesuit's march to the state finals, the Spartans used a high shooting percentage and strength on the interior to muscle their way to Columbia. But Saturday, the team ran into a Rockhurst club opponent that could shoot and rebound better than they could, en route to a Hawklet 73-59 victory in the Class 5 State basketball title game played at Mizzou Arena. The game was broadcast statewide on FOX Sports Midwest. Nolan Berry got on the board with an eary lay-in 15 seconds in for the game's first basket, but Berry, the Butler signee, was double-teamed by the Hawklets early and often, and Rockhurst (26-5) used a decided rebounding edge to get second-chance scoring opportunities. It didn't hurt that Rockhurst senior Kyle Wolf was …

The Metro Catholic Conference rivals met for a third time in Friday's Class 5 State Semifinal.
5:15 p.m. update The De Smet Jesuit Spartans advanced to the Missouri Class 5 Championship basketball game Friday with a 58-55 win over Vianney at Mizzou Arena. Nolan Berry led the Spartans, scoring 11 of his 17 points in the first quarter. Brad Woodson, beset by foul trouble when he picked up 2 early infractions in the first half, was a one-man show in the fourth for the Griffins. He finished with a game high 22 points. De Smet Jesuit advances to play Rockhurst Saturday night. The Spartans played Rockhurst in the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament in St. Louis this season and were handled by their Jesuit counterparts from the other side of the state. Berry, who played with the flu that night, said Rockhurst didn't get De Smet Jesuit's best …

De Smet Jesuit and St. Joe's Academy have dedicated their seasons to the late Spartan alum.
When the De Smet Jesuit Spartans walked off the court and headed for the locker room at Hyland Arena at Lindenwood University Saturday after dispatching Jackson in the Class 5 quarterfinals, they received congratulatory hand slaps from the girls basketball team at St. Joseph's Academy. The girls had their own business to attend to immediately afterward, and followed through with a win against Parkway South to clinch their own trip to Mizzou Arena. The wins mean the #35 warmup jerseys the teams have both worn this season will get at least one more use. The jerseys honor the late Jim Goessling, the De Smet Jesuit graduate who was part of the school's first state championship basketball team. Goessling died last October after a battle with …

Monday night, school board members will discuss possible security changes coming in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut mass shooting.
The Ladue school district, which responded to the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting last month by making one quick change at Horton Watkins High School to lock doors during the day, will outline other measures at Monday's school board meeting which could still be taken to improve school security. A more thorough conversation on security is planned for board discussion next month. Awareness of issues surrounding school security at Ladue schools has been heightened in recent weeks. An Instagram account discovered recently featured a profile photo of the shooter in the Newtown shooting and prompted school leaders to ask for a ramped up police presence. Police have reportedly issued a search warrant for Instagram in hopes of tracking …

Future Ohio State star capped his high school career with 419 all-purpose yards and set several other Show-Me Bowl records.
ST. LOUIS -- Even as the tears streamed down his face, John Burroughs senior football star Ezekiel Elliott stepped forward and did the one thing nobody else on his team wanted to do -- he accepted the second place trophy following the Bombers’ 35-22 loss to Maryville in the MSHSAA Class Show-Me Bowl, Friday afternoon at the Edward Jones Dome. Check out the game photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Patch. After four years of pain and sweat, and three straight heart-aching Show-Me Bowl losses, no one of the Burroughs team wanted anything to do with that second place trophy. But just as he had all season, and throughout his brilliant career as a Bomber, Elliott stepped up and did what I had to be done. “I had to be strong for my teammates,” Elliott …

No. 1-ranked and undefeated Bombers will take on No. 2-ranked Maryville (MO) in state championship game, Friday afternoon at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis.
GAMEDAY PREVIEW -- CLASS 3 SHOW-ME BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME MARYVILLE SPOOFHOUNDS (14-0) vs. JOHN BURROUGHS BOMBERS (13-0) EDWARD JONES DOME -- NOVEMBER 23, 2012 -- 1 p.m. ST. LOUIS -- They have been waiting 363 days for the chance to fix something that happened in a heartbreaking instant that cost them a state title. Their all-world, four-star rated running back, who's headed to Ohio State next season, was about to score a game-tying touchdown in the final seconds of the Class 3 Show-Me Bowl championship game last year. But before he could, some unnamed defender swooped in and knocked the ball out of his hands, forcing a fumble that cost John Burroughs its second straight shot at winning state. And since the moment that game ended, the …

Senior touchdown machine will lead Bombers in third straight state championship game appearance on Friday, before heading to Ohio State next year.
Update: Zeke Elliott will depart Sunday for the U.S. Army All Star football game in San Antonio Tx. On the eve of the biggest, and final, game of his remarkable high school career, John Burroughs senior football star Ezekiel Elliott has just a few hours left to lament the two goals he set for himself going into this season. "Zeke," as he's called by friends, family, and teammates, desperately wants to break the the St. Louis area single-season touchdown record, which currently stands at 54. "I just want that record," said Elliott, who has 47 touchdowns this season, after scoring three times in the JBS' 28-6 win over Monett (MO) in the state semifinals last Saturday. "I still think I can get it." But what Elliott and all his Bomber …

With 44 touchdowns last year, and 47 more this year, the Ohio State-bound star has scored 91 touchdowns the last two seasons.
Among the many honorees in nine different sports announced as 2012 All-Stars by Metro League commissioner Dory Smith on Monday, one announcement was no surprise at all. And that worst-kept secret of probably the entire 2012 Fall sports season was that John Burroughs running back Ezekiel Elliott -- the conference leader in rushing yards, total yards, all-purpose yards, and the St. Louis area leader in touchdowns -- was named Metro League Football Player of the Year, after a weekend vote conducted amongst the league's coaches. Elliott, who was a city-wide Player of the Year candidate last year, after scoring 44 touchdowns and leading the Bombers to their second straight Show-Me Bowl state title game, is widely considered the leading …

Saints lose seven seniors from last year, but believe new team chemistry will keep team on winning track.
A fairly humorous moment occurred at Villa Duchesne girls basketball practice recently, when head coach Jane Ellen Kuenzle tried to name all the players on her team off the top of her head. The coach tried as best she could to remember everybody on the roster, and even named several players twice, but even a veteran coach like Kuenzle couldn't remember all the new names on her team without taking a look around Villa's beautiful Kenefick Gymnasium to remind her who was actually on the team this year. "We have a lot of new girls up on varsity this year," Kuenzle said. "I think we've only got four girls coming back that have played for me before, and one of them was injured last year. So, this team is a whole lot different than last year." …
