Stan 'The Man' Musial Dead At Age 92

The St. Louis Cardinal icon and baseball hall of fame outfielder passed away Saturday night.

Stan Musial, a giant in the St. Louis community and the baseball world for more than half a century, died Saturday at his home in Ladue.  "Stan the Man passed peacefully at home at 5:45 pm tonight of natural causes. Life will never be the same without baseball's perfect knight," his grandson, Brian Musial Schwarze said via Twitter Saturday evening. Musial was 92 and had been in poor health in recent years. Musial, who entered baseball's Hall of Fame in 1969, played 22 years for the St. Louis Cardinals, amassing 3,630 hits and 24 All-Star Game appearances in a career full of superlatives. Said the Cardinals in posting word of Musial's death: Musial, father of three daughters and a son, was unpretentious, untroubled, friendly and folksy. The…

Is David Freese an MLB All-Star?

The third baseman sent the St. Louis Cardinals to Game 7 of the World Series with his clutch performance, but he hasn't secured a spot on the National League's All-Star Game roster yet. Fans can still vote him in.

Why doesn’t the World Series MVP have a spot on the All-Star team yet? David Freese rescued the St. Louis Cardinals when they were one strike away from losing the World Series twice, and started this season with 13 home runs. Aside from baseball, he created his own baseball camp, suffered through an obnoxious interview at Six Flags St. Louis and made this 7-year old’s dream come true. Does that sound like an All-Star to you? Vote here or text N2 to 89269 to cast your ballot for Freese, who is competing against Bryce Harper (Washington Nationals), Michael Bourn (Atlanta Braves) and Aaron Hill (Arizona Diamondbacks). Freese was in the running against favorite Atlanta Braves' Chipper Jones, when Major League Baseball announced Jones would …

What's interesting here is the time Bryce Harper lost in the race when he did the cool thing and told people to vote for Chipper Jones when Jones was still in the running as a last candidate, in what is his final season. Hard to pinpoint how many votes Harper lost between Sunday and Tuesday. Also saw that Bradley Beal was already getting into the DC spirit by using his twitter account to give …   more ›

We're following local products who have made it to the big leagues. Check out what Scott Van Slyke and Max Scherzer did Sunday!

He pitching seven innings and struck out 15, which according to espn.com is the most in 40 years for the franchise. He evened his record at 3-3, after going 4 innings in his start Tuesday, not enough for the win. Scott Van Slyke The Burroughs grad from Chesterfield hit his first major league home run Sunday night pinch-hitting for the Los Angeles Dodgers against his hometown team. Our story neglected to mention Washington Nationals Pitcher Ross Detwiler, the pride of Wentzville Holt. He's 3-3, and suffered a loss over the weekend to the AL East leading Baltimore Orioles, with a 3.65 ERA.   more ›

Can the Cardinals Repeat as World Series Champions?

The St. Louis Cardinals look to begin their title-defense today when they kickoff the regular season against the Miami Marlins.

Today's Major League Baseball's official Opening Day, considered by thousands of St. Louisans as an unofficial holiday. And while the St. Louis Cardinals' home opener is really where it's at, that's not stopping us from getting into the baseball mood!  There's no shortage of story lines for the 2012 Cardinals as they look to defend last season's World Series Championship when the season kicks off today against the Miami Marlins.  Related: Update your Facebook Timeline cover photo with an image that captures your loyalty for the Redbirds. The team is missing perhaps three of its biggest names of the past decade in manager Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan—both of whom retired—and, of course, Albert Pujols, who signed with the Los …

In the most recent ESPN magazine, he at least gave STL its props, but said it was a business decision. I don't think he's enough to turn around the Angels.   more ›
