Westminster Girls Defeat MICDS In District Final

The Wildcats outscore the Rams 23-14 in the fourth quarter in a 56-52 win in the Class 4, District 6 championship.

Westminster Christian freshman Kayla Armstrong had a huge smile as Sadie Stipanovich stepped to the free throw line with nine seconds remaining and the Wildcats up by six points in the Class 4 District 6 championship game against MICDS Friday night. Armstrong had plenty to be happy about as she scored 11 fourth quarter points to lead the Wildcats to a 56-52 victory at Clayton High School. It was only the second loss of the season for MICDS. Both came against Westminster. "We like to play pressure defense and pressure offense and you can't stop that at the end of the game," Armstrong said. "We wanted this so badly. Our motto all season was "Why Not Us." Armstrong converted all five of her fourth quarter free throws including four in the …

St. Joe's and MICDS Earn Top Seeds

The Angels are the top seed in the Class 5 District 3 Tournament at Webster while MICDS is seeded first at the Class 4 District 6 Tournament at Clayton.

The MICDS girls basketball team concluded the most successful regular season in school history Thursday night with a 51-45 victory over Principia. The Rams finished with a 21-1 record which eclipsed the previous best record of 19-7 which they set last season. "It was a great regular season," MICDS junior Campbell Torchin said. "But we can't go into districts thinking we are 21-1. This is a brand new season and everyone is 0-0." And there is little chance that the Rams will not be ready for districts as their lone loss of the season came against Westminster Christian, which is seeded second behind MICDS. "I think it will help with our motivation if we get to play them again," MICDS Coach Scott Small said. "We played them in their gym after …

MICDS Girls Close Regular Season With A Win

The Rams defeat Principia 51-45 to finish the regular season with a 21-1 record.

MICDS students finished final exams Thursday. The Rams' girls basketball team had a true test in their regular season finale Thursday night and as they have done in all but one game this season, they came away with a victory. It was a hard-fought one as MICDS defeated Principia, 51-45 at MICDS to finish the regular season with a 21-1 record. "Principia is one of the best teams we played all season and you want a challenge like this right before districts," MICDS Coach Scott Small said. "You don't necessarily want to play them twice in a week, though." Because of a postponement earlier in the season, the two teams played Monday with the margin of victory the same. MICDS won at Principia 55-49, scoring 23 points in the fourth quarter. The …

MICDS Girls Sweep Burroughs Again

The Rams win for the eighth straight time against the Bombers, 47-31 Saturday night at Washington University.

The feeling for MICDS senior Delaney Hobbs was the same as it had been the previous seven times she had faced John Burroughs. For the eighth time in eight tries Hobbs was on the winning end of the rivalry game as MICDS defeated the Bombers 47-31 Saturday night at Washington University. "This was great not just for me but for the whole team," Hobbs said. "This has been a rivalry for a long time and every win against them is special." MICDS had won the previous meeting this season by an almost identical score (47-32). "The games were pretty similar, too," MICDS Coach Scott Small said. "It is always special when you beat Burroughs. I can't think of a four-year stretch like this where MICDS has won each game. "I think Burroughs may have won …

JBS Boys, MICDS Girls Continue Streaks

The Bomber boys win their sixth straight while Ram girls go to 14-0.

Foye Oluokun sent the John Burroughs' faithful into a frenzy with a soaring dunk in the final moments of the Bombers' 58-34 victory over MICDS before an overflow crowd Friday night at MICDS. It was an exclamation point on a wonderful performance by Burroughs, which won for the sixth time in a row. The loud "Foye, Foye, Foye, Foye" chant to the tune of the international soccer "Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole" chanted by the Burroughs' followers put a huge smile on the face of Oluokun. "It always makes me smile when they do that," said Oluokun, a sophomore. "That was my first dunk in a game and that is another reason I was so excited. I think it was all adrenaline. It was easier than I thought it would be." The same could be said of the game as MICDS …

Three Area Teams Ranked in Top 10

St. Joseph's Academy, MICDS and Ladue Girls All Make the List.

Area girls basketball teams continue to shine which is evidenced by three of the five teams in the Ladue-Frontenac Patch coverage area being ranked in the top 10 in the latest Missouri basketball rankings. St. Joseph's Academy and Ladue are ranked third and eighth respectively in Class 5 while MICDS is ranked third in Class 4. The two Rams' teams (Ladue and MICDS) remain undefeated at 12-0 for the season. "I know the girls are excited about the ranking," Ladue Coach Cord Dockery said. "I try not to get too involved with it myself. Regardless of the rankings our main goal is to try and win our conference which Ladue has not done since maybe 2001-02 and then we will have to shift our focus to districts and see how we do there." Ladue has …

Ladue, MICDS Perfect in 2010

MICDS and Ladue Win Tournaments and Remain Unbeaten.

The four area basketball teams which competed in holiday tournaments finished with an impressive cumulative record of 11-2. One of the losses came in a head-to-head area match-up while the other was a one point loss by St. Joseph's Academy. MICDS and Ladue won tournaments and in the process remained perfect as they completed the 2010 portion of their schedule. MICDS won the Lutheran South Holiday Tournament for the first time. The Rams defeated Clayton, Oakville and Villa Duchesne en route to the championship. "It was exciting for the kids but we never made it a goal to win this tournament," MICDS Coach Scott Small said. Campbell Torchin and Delaney Hobbs were named to the All-Tournament team at Lutheran South. Torchin, a sharp-shooting …

MICDS Girls Capture Lutheran South Tournament Title

Campbell Torchin scores 16 points as the top-seeded Rams defeat Villa Duchesne 40-31 Tuesday night.

The shooting philosophy for MICDS junior Campbell Torchin is a simple one. "I try to calm myself before the game and then let the ball fly," Torchin said. She let it fly and saw it fall often as Torchin scored the first five points of the game and the first eight Rams' points in a 40-31 victory over Villa Duchesne in the championship game of the 29th Annual Lutheran South Christmas Tournament. "I felt good before the game," the southpaw said. "Every time we play them it seems to be low scoring so every basket counts. I expected a tough game and we got a tough game." Torchin added a pair of important 3-pointers in the third quarter as the Saints, who trailed by 12 points after the first quarter, pulled to within four in the second half. "We…

MICDS Remains Perfect WIth Win Over Borgia

Delaney Hobbs returns and scores career point 1,000 in 49-39 victory.

Delaney Hobbs scored her 1,000th career point and the MICDS girls basketball team won their fifth game in a row to start the season with a 49-39 win over St. Francis Borgia Friday night at MICDS. Hobbs was playing her first game of the season after tearing her ACL in a summer league game June 29. The senior entered the game late in the first quarter and hit a regulation field goal in the second quarter and followed with a 3-pointer which gave her the milestone. "I didn't know it when it happened but I was glad it was a 3-pointer," Hobbs said. "It was just so good to be out there again. I missed all of volleyball season and I was not about to miss my senior year of basketball." Hobbs came back a month and a half ahead of schedule and played…
