Villa Saints Pick Up Second Win of the Season

Villa rolls past Clayton to reach title game of the consolation bracket at the MICDS Holiday Tournament.

A 2-6 start to the season is not what veteran Villa coach Jane Ellen Kuenzle had in mind for her team. But she'll take a 43-40 win over Clayton and be satisfied, for the moment. Rachel Arnold dropped in both ends of a 1 and 1 free throw situation with 10.3 seconds left to seal the deal. Villa meets Francis Howell, 1:30 p.m. today in the consolation championship game. Howell defeated Triad in the opposite bracket, 74-54. See more tournament photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook Page. Morgan Schlegel, 5-foot-4 sophomore guard led all scorers with 16 points. Senior forward Alex Roth chipped in 10. Laci Sams, a senior for Clayton had 15 points; Nina Murov added 8. Villa led Clayton at halftime 19-14. The Saints grabbed an early lead and were …

MICDS Boys Fall Just Short In Rally Attempt Against No. 6 Westminster Christian

Senior Trey Pettus scores game-high 21 points to keep Rams in it, but late free throw gives Wildcats just enough to squeak by.

After losing three close ballgames in the first three weeks of the season, MICDS boys basketball coach Matt Hixenbaugh felt like the win his Rams got at the buzzer on a trip to Nashville a couple weeks ago, might finally be the one to get the Rams over the hump. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way last Saturday evening, when MICDS hosted Westminster Christian Academy in the first round of the 2012 MICDS Boys Holiday Invitational Tournament. The Rams trailed from very early on, and fell behind by as many as 12 points at one juncture. But the tournament hosts nearly rallied all the way back, getting to within two points in the final seconds. But a clutch free throw by Westminster's Jack Dohr gave the No. 6-ranked Wildcats just enough …

MICDS Girls Clobber Clayton In First Round Holiday Tournament Action

Rams rattle 'Hounds with tough full-court pressure defense, and cruise to big win in opening round of the MICDS Girls Holiday Tournament.

If MICDS girls basketball coach Scott Small could've guessed beforehand how well his Rams would play in their first round game at the MICDS Holiday Tournament against Clayton High on Friday, he couldn't have dreamed of a better performance. The Rams, who hadn't done anything but practice all week, looked like a well-oiled machine Friday night against the Greyhounds at the McDonnell Gymnasium. And they looked especially fantastic on defense, where their relentless full-court pressure caused all kinds of problems for Clayton, and led MICDS to a dynamic 66-15 victory over the 'Hounds. "You know we have to give Clayton credit for that," Small said. "We played them over at their place, a week and a half ago, and it was a seven-point game at …

Patch High School Hoops Roundup: JBS Boys, St. Joe Girls Remain Unbeaten Heading Into Holiday Break

An inside look at what went down this week in local high school basketball, along with a look at what's coming up next week.

As the Missouri high school basketball season passes the quarter pole, two things have become crystal clear. The John Burroughs boys team is really good. And so is the St. Joseph's Academy girls team. Those points have been driven home emphatically, as both teams have begun the new season with unblemished records. The JBS boys are 7-0, following a sensational 56-45 win over O'Fallon Christian at the Terrell Ramey/Midwest Showdown Shootout at Lindenwood University last Saturday. That victory capped an incredible week for the Bombers, who won all three games they played, adding in triumphs over Brentwood (65-31, back on December 10) and Clayton (60-59 on Decmeber 13). Senior guard Foye Oluokun has been stuffing the stat sheet all year for …
