Pettus' Huge Night Carries MICDS To Come-From-Behind Victory Over Lutheran North

Senior point guard had 22 points and led a furious fourth-quarter charge, as Rams rallied to defeat Crusaders 44-41 in a critical Metro League hoops contest.

ST. LOUIS -- For much of the night on Tuesday, beginning with a four-point first quarter and a dismally cold-shooting first half, the MICDS boys basketball team couldn’t do much right in its hugely important Metro League matchup against rival Lutheran North High. Fortunately for the Rams though, the Crusaders weren’t playing a whole lot better, and only held a 33-27 lead going into the fourth quarter. That’s when MICDS senior Trey Pettus took over, playing tremendous defense on Lutheran North scoring machine Anthony Virdure, and finishing with a game-high 22 points of his own, to lead the Rams to a phenomenal fourth quarter comeback, which produced a 44-41 win on the road. Junior forward Robin Thompson, who had just three points on the …

MICDS Falls To Kirkwood In First Hockey Game Of New Year

Rams were outshot 34-11 by the Pioneers, who got two goals and an assist from sophomore Michael Davies in 3-1 win.

AFFTON -- Even while giving up three times as many shots as they were able to take, the MICDS ice hockey team was just a goal away from securing at least a tie in its New Year's night Mid-States Hockey Association matchup against Kirkwood. So when the Rams were granted a power play with about 90 seconds left in the game, the decision was made for MICDS to pull its goalie and attack the Pioneers with a 6 against 4 advantage. Unfortunately, that ploy didn't work, as Kirkwood sophomore Michael Davies gained possession of the puck inside the MICDS zone, and scored an empty net goal with eight seconds left that gave the Pioneers a hard-fought 3-1 win over the Rams. The defeat was MICDS' third in its last four games, and dropped the Rams to 5-7-…

Last-Second Loss To Principia Drops MICDS Boys Hoops To 1-5

Frontcourt standouts William Morehead and Robin Thompson had 19 points and 18 points to lead the Rams, but Prin's Joe Colliatie hit a short jumper with 10 seconds left to lift the Panthers to a 53-52 victory.

The beginning of this new boys basketball season has been a bit of a struggle for MICDS and head coach Matt Hixenbaugh. The Rams, who are coming off a 15-9 season last year, which included an undefeated run through Metro League conference play, were expected to be one of the teams to watch this season, with many believing MICDS might be a team that could do some damage once the state playoffs roll around in February and March. But the season hasn't begun that way, with MICDS taking three losses out of four games at the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Washington, IL, back in November, and then adding a fourth loss in its first game against a local team (Clayton High) back on December 4. The MICDS squad was just about desperate for a …

MICDS Girls Win Foul-Fest Opener Over Cardinal Ritter

Junior Josie Cusworth scored a game-high 17 points, and freshman Rachel Thompson added 12 points, as Rams raced past Ritter for 52-30 victory.

The MICDS girls basketball team opened its 2012-2013 season Tuesday night at the McDonnell Gymnasium, with a performance that was both beautiful and downright ugly. On the positive side, the Rams played magnificent defense, owned the rebounding edge by a wide margin, and held visiting Cardinal Ritter to just 30 points, in a 52-30 victory. On the ugly side, MICDS had an atrocious night shooting free throws, as the Rams went to the line a whopping 56 times, but made only 26 of them (46 percent). Fortunately, the rough night at the foul line didn't come back to bite the Rams, who held Cardinal Ritter to just 10 points in the first half, and 17 points through three quarters, with a truly dominant performance on the defensive end. Junior Josie …

New-look MICDS Hoops Squad Back to Defend Metro League Title

Rams were 15-9 last year, but went 9-1 in league games to win the conference, before bowing out of playoffs in district semifinals.

Looking back on the 2011-2012 boys basketball season, and one thing stands out. The MICDS Rams probably pulled off the surprise of the season, by winning the Metro League conference championship. With rivals Lutheran North and John Burroughs both boasting star-studded rosters, hardly anyone would've guessed (without already knowing) that it was MICDS that won the conference title last year. "I think some people probably missed that," MICDS head coach Matt Hixenbaugh said. "But yeah, we had a good run. We beat Lutheran North twice in two close ballgames. We don't really set out to win conference titles, but it is nice to get that reward for all the hard work we put into it." And the Rams did it as a true "team", with several players …

Had a lot of fun hangin' out with the Rams on their team picture day last week. Coach Hixenbaugh is a great guy and he's got a talented club that we will be watching closely all year!   more ›

MICDS Athletic Department Wins National Award For Off-The-Field Achievements

Athletic director Don Maurer, Head of School Lisa Lyle, and Head of Upper School Scott Small accepted the Interscholastic Sports Program of Excellence award on Tuesday, which named MICDS one of the four best athletic departments in the nation.

Athletic director Don Maurer, his staff, and colleagues at MICDS were honored on Tuesday, after receiving the nationally-coveted, Interscholastic Sports Program of Excellence award from Coach and Athletic Director magazine. The national publication, which serves more than 28,000 top coaching and athletic director decision-makers, awarded just four programs with its top honor, and decided MICDS was the best among those in the private school with enrollment over 500 category, due to the school's outstanding off-the-field achievements in its athletics department. “Don Maurer has created an atmosphere unlike any other that encourages the intellectual growth of both student-athletes and coaches,” said Kevin Hoffman, associate editor of Coach …

Ladue Beats Clayton In PKs For Second Time, Claims Class 4 District 5 Soccer Championship

Junior goalkeeper Eric Stuber makes two dynamite saves in penalty kick round to lift Rams to victory over the archrival Greyhounds.

Back on October 12, the Ladue High and Clayton High boys soccer teams played one of their typical thrilling Suburban East Conference matchups that had to be settled in overtime penalty kicks. So it was a surprise to no one on Thursday, when the Rams and Greyhounds battled for the MSHSAA Class 2 District 5 championship at MICDS High School's Hawes Field, that it would once again be decided in PKs. "It's always like this when we play," Ladue head coach Matt Prange said. "It's a great rivalry. The kids always get into it, and it was great out here again tonight." Once it concluded, things were great for Prange and crew -- not so much for Clayton coach Tom Redmond and his Greyhounds -- as Ladue scored on all three of its penalty kicks and held…

MICDS, Clayton Need Another Day To Decide District Semifinal

Rams-Greyhounds soccer semifinal suspended due to darkness, teams will finish up with penalty kicks Wednesday at 3:45 p.m., with the winner to face Ladue in the championship on Thursday.

On Field No. 5 at MICDS High School Tuesday afternoon, top-seeded Ladue made easy work of University City, besting the Lions in 6-1 rout to advance to the Class 2 District 5 championship game on Thursday. Ladue scored early and often, and the outcome was never in doubt. On upper field No. 3 though, district host MICDS and visiting Clayton, were playing an entirely different kind of game. And when it was over, it wasn't over, as the Rams and Greyhounds played a full regulation game, two overtime periods, and a round of penalty kicks, that left the score tied at one, and neither team able to declare itself the winner. The Rams and 'Hounds played so hard, and for so long on Tuesday, they ran out of daylight, leaving the game officials no …
