Q & A With MICDS Soccer Coach Michael Black

Rams romp over Lutheran South in a rain-shortened 10-0 victory. Four big games next week.

Editors note: In a Mercy rule shortened game and in the rain, MICDS won its 13th game of the year, beating Lutheran South, 10-0. The Rams are 13-1-1 this year. Caroline Militello scored a natural hat trick, four goals in the game including the first coming just 27 seconds into the match. Militello has 14 goals, 8 assists for 36 points. The Rams have outscored opponents 64-7 this season. Cassy Collins, Mary Condie and Izzie Howerton each scored 2 goals in the game-shortened win. Loads of game photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. Because of lightening before the Lutheran South game a rain delay was the perfect opportunity to catch up with MICDS soccer coach Michael Black as he sets the table for the playoffs. This is what he had to …

Rob Ewald's Bat, Arm Leads Ladue to 8-3 Win Over Lutheran South

Rams jump on Lancers for 14 hits, 8 RBIs for 15th win of the season. Ewald his 8 strikeouts in 5 frames.

Next stop for Ladue’s sensational pitcher Rob Ewald is Lafayette College, Easton, PA. But there’s more to be done before he packs his bags. Ewald came up with the 15th Ladue win (17 games) with his right arm and his bat. Proof positive in the 8-3 Thursday romp over a strong visiting team, Lutheran South. Ewald went five frames, allowed just 4 hits and 3 runs while striking out 8. Down 3-2 in the early going, Ewald sparked an uprising in the home half of the third. Ewald struck out the side in the visitors’ half of the fourth, then delivered the game-winning blow in the home half of the same frame. With runners on the corner (Gabe Grand singled and went to third when Dylan Barstow reached on an error by the right fielder), Ewald smacked a …

Ladue Records 15th Win in 17 Outings

Rob Ewald sparkles on the mound & at the plate in 8-3 win over Lutheran South.

The Ladue Rams had to overcome 3 runs by Lutheran South in the visitors half of the third and went on to post an 8-3 win over the Lancers of Lutheran South Thursday at their West Ladue campus field. The Rams banged out 14 hits, had 7 RBIs as Ewald went five frames and C.J. Goeckner came in to shut down the Lancers in the last two frames. This was a big game for Ewald, center fielder Lex Kaplan and right fielder Levi Greenberg at the plate. Loads of game images on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. Kaplan delivered an RBI single in the first; Ewald smacked a double up the middle for 2 RBIs in the fourth and Greenberg was on base 3 of 4 times at the plate. Coach Rob Garrett pronounced this a quality win over a strong opponent. Lutheran South…

Hot Free Throw Shooting Dooms MICDS at Home, 52-44

Lutheran South played a solid game from wire to wire, their 12th victory of the year.

If Parker Van Nest has taken geometry at Lutheran South, then he knows the shortest distance between two points is a flat line. Shooting free throws with just a bit of arc on them, Van Nest was lights out down the stretch, converting both ends of 1 and 1 free throw opportunities three times, and hitting on the front end of another, enough points to lift Lutheran South to a 52-44 Metro League win over home team MICDS. This was exam week for the host Rams (11-11) and they played like it. Holding second place in the conference, the Rams went scoreless for the first 4:33 of the third quarter, and what was a 21-18 halftime deficit turned into a commanding 31-21 Lancer lead midway through the third. Actually, the Rams could muster just 8 points …

MICDS Shakes Off Rust Quickly In Dominant Metro League Win Over Lutheran South

Rams moved to 11-1 by completely stifling South's offense, in what is now MICDS' ninth straight victory.

AFFTON -- The first few minutes of Friday's Metro League girls basketball game began the same way that almost every game this season has begun for MICDS, with the Rams struggling to find their rhythm on offense. There were several bad possessions at the beginning of the game for MICDS, including more than one that ended with either a turnover or a missed shot. Surprisingly, even with a full week off after the Rams won the MICDS Girls Holiday Tournament championship game back on December 29, the rusty period only lasted those first few minutes on Friday. Once MICDS did find its form, it blew right through Lutheran South, for a truly impressive, 52-24 win over the Lancers. "We really kind of struggled to find our rhythm in that first half," …

MICDS Rams Erase Lutheran South Lead for Win

The Rams were losing by six at the half and by 14 until deep into the third quarter.

The Rams of Mary Institute & Country Day School found themselves behind by 14 points deep into the third quarter against the Lutheran South Lancers. Struggling with penalties and difficulty moving the football, the team finally got on the scoreboard on a long sideline run by wide receiver Alim Muhammad. With just under 4 minutes left in the third quarter, the Rams scored the extra point, set the score at 14-7, and it was all MICDS from then on. Priory Should Give Burroughs a Tougher Test on Friday

MICDS hosts Lutheran South while Ladue Goes to McCluer South-Berkeley.

Secretly, John Burroughs football team would probably like a tougher test than they’ve had so far this season. They have steam rolled Cape Girardeau Central 43-14 and whitewashed Lutheran South, 35-0 in a game shortened by the storm last Friday. (2-0) Burroughs vs Priory (1-1), home Friday, 4:30 p.m. Running back Ezekiel Elliott (8 touchdowns in two games) needs a true test. Priory could offer just that. The Rebels got wacked by Alton Marquette 55-31 but beat up on Lutheran North 51-7. The Rebels have some seasoned veterans. Like Thomas Rybuck, a hard-charging runner who has 5 TDs in two games. Quarterback David Nogalski is 21 of 29 passing for 294 yards. Priory return specialist John Agnew has 156 yards of real estate so far. Burroughs …

Why hasn't there been a Saturday afternoon game for the Bombers yet? I get the rain-shortened game against South last Friday but this appears to have been scheduled on Friday in advance, which is interesting given the lack of lights. Religious observations? Just curious.   more ›

Will the Rain Play Havoc With the Local Football Schedule This Weekend?

Ladue at Parkway West Friday; Lutheran South at Burroughs and MICDS at Westminster Saturday.

The local football teams all play this weekend, with an eye on the sky, wondering how much rain they will have to endure? The remnants of tropical hurricane Isaac might soak the local players. “We will have a game at Burroughs Saturday unless there is lightening,” said the Bombers athletic director Peter Tasker. Friday afternoon reschedule This is the first game rescheduled to try and get ahead of the storm. (0-1) MICDS at (1-0) Westminster Christian Academy, 4 p.m. Senior rusher Denzell Conway dashed for two TD runs in a 35-19 loss to Maplewood. A year ago, the Rams won the opener with the Blue Devils 36-35 in overtime. Coach Josh Smith is trying different combinations and see who will win the starting quarterback job. He changed Shane …

ABC All League Selections For The Final Time

MICDS, Burroughs dominate offensive and defensive selections.

MICDS and John Burroughs dominated the selections on the final ABC League all league selections. Quietly, the group will officially morph into the Metro Conference next season. The Rams of MICDS, runners-up in the Class 4 Show-Me Bowl placed nine players on offense and defense on the first team and seven on the second team. The Burroughs Bombers, runners-up in the Class 3 Show-Me Bowl placed five on the first unit, and six on the second. Dominating stars are Mizzou bound Michael Scherer and Dartmouth bound Thomas Militello of MICDS; Todd Hearnes, Peter Schlafly, Scherer and Denzell Conway and Burroughs standouts Ezekiel Elliott and Nathan Adams on offense, and Christian Bledsoe, Bear Kaminer and Foye Oluokun on defense. Burroughs, MICDS, Ladue All Look to Extend Winning Ways

All local teams locked up in games Thursday night.

There's a couple of interesting things going on locally in football. First of all, its Yom Kippur in the Jewish faith so all the local teams have games Thursday night at 7 p.m., ahead of worship services Friday night at sunset. Also, MICDS and Ladue have to avoid the temptation of looking ahead to their Oct. 15th showdown (Ladue at MICDS 1 p.m.). Both Ladue and Burroughs feature two of the most prolific ground gainers in St. Louis. That would be the Bombers Ezekiel Elliott and Ladue's Deavin Edwards. Burroughs at Lutheran South, 7 p.m. Elliott has rushed for 780 yards and 14 TDs, fourth best in the area. He should have a clear path against 2-3 Lutheran South. The Bombers, 5-1 are featuring good balance with senior QB Davey Holmes hitting …
