MICDS Romps in Home Opener, 13-6 Over Lutheran North

Rams set the stage against the Ladue Rams Saturday with big sticks in their fancy digs.

The MICDS baseball team learned a valuable lesson Thursday. Down by a score of 6-1, the Rams learned not to give up on themselves. They erupted for 12 runs in the 4th-6th innings and beat a good Lutheran North team at home, 13-6. It took nearly 2 1/2 hours to get a decision. Shane Combs, the third pitcher in the game finally put down the Crusader uprising. The Rams had plenty of hitting stars. One was a newcomer, freshman Harrison Burns. He got things going in the 4th frame with an RBI double, driving home Kai Rebmann. BJ Klar delivered the key hit in the frame, with two outs, he hit a key single on a two-strike count. When a pop fly fell in the outfield, the Rams pulled within one 6-5. With Zach Morazec in relief of starter Tanner …

Pettus' Huge Night Carries MICDS To Come-From-Behind Victory Over Lutheran North

Senior point guard had 22 points and led a furious fourth-quarter charge, as Rams rallied to defeat Crusaders 44-41 in a critical Metro League hoops contest.

ST. LOUIS -- For much of the night on Tuesday, beginning with a four-point first quarter and a dismally cold-shooting first half, the MICDS boys basketball team couldn’t do much right in its hugely important Metro League matchup against rival Lutheran North High. Fortunately for the Rams though, the Crusaders weren’t playing a whole lot better, and only held a 33-27 lead going into the fourth quarter. That’s when MICDS senior Trey Pettus took over, playing tremendous defense on Lutheran North scoring machine Anthony Virdure, and finishing with a game-high 22 points of his own, to lead the Rams to a phenomenal fourth quarter comeback, which produced a 44-41 win on the road. Junior forward Robin Thompson, who had just three points on the …

No Zeke, No Problem: Burroughs Moves to 11-0 Despite Being One Man Short In Showdown With Lutheran North

Foye Oluokun drops a triple-double, and Trevor Bain knocks down seven three-pointers in sensational JBS win over rival Lutheran North.

The entire John Burroughs community is abuzz over football star Ezekiel Elliott's trip to San Antonio this week for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl football game that will kickoff in front of a national audience at high noon today. Just about anyone with any type of tie to JBS is expected to attend one of the many "Zeke Elliott watch parties" on Saturday, so they can see first-hand how the Burroughs senior does in his first chance to play on a national stage. About the only negative part of Elliott being in San Antonio this weekend, is that meant he would have to miss the JBS home basketball game against rival Lutheran North, Friday night at historic Olin Gymnasium. That left the remaining Burroughs basketball players with a particularly …

Burroughs Romp: 56-14 over Lutheran North

Ezekiel Elliott scores 5 more TDs; more coverage Monday on Patch.

Burroughs flexed its muscles once more, and romped over visiting Lutheran North 56-14 Saturday afternoon. The game was shortened in the fourth quarter by a running clock. With that, the Bombers are a perfect 4-0. Ezekiel Elliott put on another dazzling show, scoring 5 TDs in the route. Now it’s on to the showcase game with MICDS. The two titans will clash Saturday, 2 p.m. on the Rams home field. Come back Monday for interviews with the coach and players and photos too.

Nine goals, a Walk in the Park for Villa's Soccer Team

Saints whitewash visiting Lutheran North in Metro Conference game.

Spring break officially started Wednesday at 3:15 for the Villa Saints. The 4-1 soccer team had some unfinished business before heading for Padre Island and points south. The Saints won’t return to school or the turf until the Monday after Easter. The Saints toyed with Visiting Lutheran North in a Metro Conference game, winning easily 9-0. One more goal and the game would have come to a sudden finish with the game-ending 10 goal rule. Winning coach Tim Twellman handed the visiting Crusaders some credit. “They never gave up. They kept coming at us right until the end of the game.” But Saints forwards had target practice, finding the net five times in the first half. Here’s a quick summary of the scoring blotter: Two goals each for Kaitleya …

MICDS Beats Lutheran North 42-19 For Final ABC League Title

Rams use perfect balance to register 7th consecutive win of the season.

Mike Russell last coached at Lutheran North 14 years ago. After seeing the Rams of MICDS blast his Crusaders 42-19 on the artificial turf at St. Louis U. High, he might want to wait another 14 years to return to coaching. The Rams won the ABC League title for the 84th and final year. Next year the conference changes its title officially to the Metro League. The home team showed some things they’d rarely shown in the previous six victories. They showed both a propensity to put the ball on the turf and they showed their prized trick play the old fashioned ‘hook and ladder.’ The same one they used against John Burroughs in the third week of the season. “It wasn’t pretty and we need to clean up some things because we’ll be playing a better …

I apologize for any profanity I used. But the fact remains that is was a classless remark by the MICDS head coach. Thoughts on that?   more ›

Burroughs, MICDS, Ladue All Look to Extend Winning Ways

All local teams locked up in games Thursday night.

There's a couple of interesting things going on locally in football. First of all, its Yom Kippur in the Jewish faith so all the local teams have games Thursday night at 7 p.m., ahead of worship services Friday night at sunset. Also, MICDS and Ladue have to avoid the temptation of looking ahead to their Oct. 15th showdown (Ladue at MICDS 1 p.m.). Both Ladue and Burroughs feature two of the most prolific ground gainers in St. Louis. That would be the Bombers Ezekiel Elliott and Ladue's Deavin Edwards. Burroughs at Lutheran South, 7 p.m. Elliott has rushed for 780 yards and 14 TDs, fourth best in the area. He should have a clear path against 2-3 Lutheran South. The Bombers, 5-1 are featuring good balance with senior QB Davey Holmes hitting …

MICDS, Ladue, Burroughs Look to Extend Winning Ways

Local football teams will face unique challenges this weekend.

The 2-2 Ladue Rams face Normandy, 2-2, which is an enigma of a team. Normandy has wins over Triad and Affton, while falling to Quincy, IL and Jennings. Ladue pummeled Jennings 48-26 last Saturday. Rain is in the forecast for tomorrow. "I hope it doesn't rain much," Ladue coach Mike Tarpey said. He points to the downpour of a game on the Vikings field two years ago. "We had so much rain and lightening a 1 o'clock start turned out to be a 3 o'clock start. We had made arrangements to move the game to the turf at SLUH, but we played it anyway at Normandy. It was a very sloppy field," he recalled. Ladue is looking for three in a row beating McCluer-Berkeley South and Jennings the past two Saturdays. Quarterback Brandon Carr has passed for 669 …
