LIl Musial Passes Away Peacefully at 6
The 91 year old wife of the Hall of Famer was the rock of his life.
When I was a kid, all I could think about was the Cardinals No. 6--Stan The Man Musial. He was my idol, my guiding light. He was the personification of everything I loved about the St. Louis Cardinals. My mother never had a drivers license. So when we went shopping downtown (that’s what you did in those days), we rode the bus all the way to Famous-Barr near the riverfront. My most special gift was my wool No. 6 Stan The Man Musial uniform. I clutched that box tightly all the way home. It is with very sad news that Cardinal Nation work up Friday to the report the beloved wife of the Man was dead at age 91. Lilian (they simply called her Lil) was in failing health and passed peacefully in Ladue with many of her family members by her bedside…

School community combines field day with donation to Cardinals Care.
Villa Duchesne Oak Hill students held their annual field day Friday throughout their campus. It was certainly a light day of fun and frivolity. But as the news spread of the death of 91-year-old Lilian Musial, the mood turned a little somber. Last year, students honored the Musials for their long-time commitment to the school. This year's field day was dedicated to honoring the Cardinals 11th World Series championship earned last fall. In the works was collecting money for the the team's pet project Cardinals Care. Head of School Sr. Lucie Nordmann and Athletic Director Dory Smith presented St. Louis Cardinals General Manager John Mozeliak with a check for Cardinals Care, the team's non-profit foundation. The Musials were honorees at Villa's field day 2011.
Almost 1,000 members of the Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School community will be paying tribute to Lil Musial today at the closing ceremonies of the 2012 Field Day. This year’s field day celebrates the 2011 World Series Champions, the St. Louis Cardinals. The school community will be joined by General Manager John Mozeliak. He is accepting a check from the school on behalf of Cardinals Care, the team's non-profit foundation. Lilian Musial, beloved wife of Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan "The Man" Musial passed away this evening in Ladue at 6 p.m.CST. Here are details of her passing. The Musials were married for almost 72 years. This is the statement from Bill DeWitt, Jr., chairman of the Cardinals.

The name 'Lil' has a bad connotation for me, since my (dumb!) aunt's name is Lil. In the Musial context, of course, it's a completely different case. From all accounts, Mrs. Musial was an extremely positive figure in her husband's life...as well as those of their immediate and extended families.
