St. Joe's Athletic Director Bowing Out After 38 Years

Michaela Witcher has been at the school that long, 28 as athletic director.

Talk about a long run... St. Joseph’s Academy has had just two athletic directors the past 60 years. Rosemary Wellington was athletic director from the inception of the new campus on Lindbergh in 1954, and retired at the end of the 1985 season. The new athletic center is named in her honor. Michaela Witcher, who came to St. Joe in 1975 as a coach and health teacher has just announced her retirement after 38 years at the school. She took over AD duties from Wellington at the start of the 1986 season. They ought to name the whole school after her. Witcher is the personification of what an athletic director ought to be. What a coach has to say “Michaela has been the heart and soul of the St. Joseph’s academic/athletic program for the past 38 …

It's no exaggeration when I declare that Michaela Witcher is the most industrious person I've ever worked with. Beyond all the behind-the-scenes administrative duties which have commanded her daily attention, she has always attended as many St. Joe athletic contests as her time allows. And while trying to take in as much of the action as possible, at every home venue event she could also be seen …   more ›

Rockhurst Defeats De Smet Jesuit in Coaches vs Cancer Shootout

First meeting of the cross-state rivals since the state tournament in 2000.

A nine point loss (75-66) was not quite what Kevin Poelker and his De Smet Jesuit Spartans had in mind, facing rival Rockhurst of Kansas City in the Coaches vs Cancer Shootout at the Scottrade Center today. The two schools last met in Columbia in the state semifinals with DeS met winning in double overtime 14 years ago. The State Line Road boys had other plans. "A win sure means a nicer bus ride home," said the Hawklettes coach Mark Nussbaum. "After the first few possessions, I think we did a nice job of putting some different defenses on them," said Nussbaum. Kyle Wolf, just now going through the recruiting process, led The Rock with 21 points and 12 rebounds. His counterpart, senior forward Nolan Berry, who is going to Butler is just …

Back to the State Soccer Semifinals for the St. Joe Angels

Last championship came a decade ago in 2002.

The last time St. Joseph’s Academy 15-6-1) won the state soccer tournament, the year was 2002. Coming up on 10 years, Coach Maureen McVey and her team are hopeful this will be their year. In 2002, assistant coach Courtney Hulcer was a member of the championship squad that beat Lee’s Summit North 4-0 for the title. Lee’s Summit North (23-3) will be the opponent once again in the semifinals, Friday, 6 p.m. on the Blue Spring South artificial turf field. In 2001, the Angels defeated Rockwood Summit 2-1 for the title. The win over Summit was particularly exciting. Both goals came in time stoppage situations. In the other Class 3 semifinal game in Kansas City, Cor Jesu Academy (21-2) takes on Springfield Glendale (19-5) at 4 p.m. “We feel good …

An Interview With the President of St. Joseph's Academy, Anita Reznicek, Part I

New president talks about history, tradition; the development of the whole school at the academy.

Ladue-Frontenac Patch is conducting interviews with the heads of all the local schools. School leaders will have the opportunity to go into great detail about the present state of their institutions. This is the first of two parts with Anita Reznicek, President of St. Joseph's Academy, who took over in July after serving St. Teresa's Academy in Kansas City for 23 years. Ladue-Frontenac Patch: You’ve been on the job four months. What are your initial impressions? Anita Reznicek: This is a fabulous school, and it’s been nonstop action since I’ve been here. I taught at the sister school (St. Teresa’s) in Kansas City, and there are lots of things about St. Joe that are similar to St. Teresa’s. The line I use: They are twins. They are sister …
