Maddie Stock's 30 points leads Angels to 59-43 win over the Tigers.
Junior guard Emmie Haring made only one shot in the Prepcasts Girls Shootout IV but it was a good one. Facing a wide open look three pointer, she drained the shot, giving St. Joseph’s Academy its first lead since the early going in their battle with Ozark High School from Southwest Missouri. The three-pointer stood up and the Angels wrestled the game from the Tigers, 59-53 running the season record to 14-2. The Angels were lethargic in the first 16 minutes and fell behind by as many as eight points, when Julie Matheny called time out with 37.0 seconds remaining in the half to stop the bleeding. In the third quarter, St. Joe outscored Ozark 20-2. They made up the five-point halftime deficit and they held a 50-37 point lead, heading into …

Morgan Stock leads Angel attack with 25 point effort.
There’s just something about the low rhythmic hum of the engine of an over the road motor coach, waiting to take its team to the next intended destination. The motor coach was warmed up and waiting to whisk the Mercy Academy girls (Louisville, KY) basketball team out of the St. Joseph’s Academy complex and on to its next appointed stop the Sheraton Hotel in West Port Plaza. The Mercy Jaguars have been a road team ever since the day after Christmas. Having finished up with a third-place prize at the Drury University tournament in Springfield, the Louisville, KY team made a house call in Frontenac. Turns out, this was the only high school event on the local New Years eve calendar. Feasting on some good old fashioned home cooking, the Angels …

Three children in tornado-ravaged Joplin, MO receive toys, clothes thanks to Angels collection drive.
The goal for coaches in the winter basketball season is to win as many games as possible. At other times of the year, those goals are different. St. Joe basketball coach Julie Matheny certainly had different things in mind in June and July. She was thinking about her girls getting into camps and competitions for skills development and thinking about players bonding and team-building exercises. Along came Deborah Groh Haring, mom of Emmie Haring, senior guard with the Angels. Debbie grew up in Neosho, MO, 15 minutes south of Joplin. Concerned about the devastation of the May tornado in Joplin and wondering what would happen next, Haring pointed Matheny to the Chests of Hope Charity in the ravaged town of some 30,000 people. Matheny was …

St. Joseph's Academy Guards Maddie & Morgan Stock Give Mizzou Verbal Commitments.
St. Joseph's Academy junior twins Maddie and Morgan Stock took the worry out of waiting by giving the University of Missouri Women's basketball program verbal commitments. Verbal commitments are not binding and they will be officially able to sign on the early date in mid-November. The decision was announced on the website Stltoday. The Angels reached the Class 5 final four in Columbia this year and the twin 6-foot-1 guards return along with junior center Syndney Stipanovich, forming one of the most formidable teams in the Midwest next winter. Maddie was a first team all Metro performer and first team all state. She was an overwhelming selection as the Ladue-Frontenac Female Athlete for the winter season. She averaged 17 points per game …

The St. Joseph's Academy guard leads her team to the final four.
St. Joseph's Academy guard Maddie Stock opened the 2010-11 season by connecting on six 3-pointers in a victory over Belleville Althoff. The 6-foot-1 junior ended her season in the Class 5 third place game at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia by scoring 19 second half points in a loss to Webb City. And Stock had plenty of highlights in between and has been named as the Ladue-Frontenac Patch Female Player of the Year for the winter season. "Maddie came out of the gate strong and took the team on her shoulders," Angels coach Julie Matheny said. "She is just an all-around very talented and gifted athlete who is passionate about the game of basketball." Stock had another six 3-point game as she scored 33 points in a win against Nerinx Hall and had …

Webb City defeats St. Joseph's Academy 69-64 Saturday afternoon at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
A 30-point fourth quarter was not enough for St. Joseph's Academy Saturday as it fell to Webb City 69-64 in the third place game of the Class 5 Tournament at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia. The Stock sisters did all they could to bring the Angels back from a double-digit deficit. Morgan and Maddie combined for 20 points in the fourth quarter and Maddie had 19 points in the second half. But the Cardinals had built too big of a lead and were tremendous at the foul line for the entire game, especially in the fourth quarter. Webb City missed just two of 16 tries in the fourth quarter and shot 84.8 percent for the game (28-for-33). "We are probably an average free throw shooting team but we tend to hit them down the stretch and we were able to …

The Angels play Blue Springs in the Class 5 semifinals Friday evening at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia..
It is very seldom that the best four teams in the state make it to the final four. In many instances it is because of the alignment of the districts and brackets where the top teams meet early in the playoffs as was the case last year when St. Joseph's and Incarnate Word were both in the same district. And then there are the Cinderella teams which pull off upsets somewhere along the road to Columbia. But this year the four teams which were considered the best in Class 5 from the very early stages of the season have survived and will match up for what promises to be one of the best girls tournaments in state history. The field includes not one, but two defending state champions. Incarnate Word defends its Class 5 title while Webb City moves…

The Angels win 65-47 Wednesday night at UMSL and will take on Hazelwood Central Saturday in the Class 5 quarterfinals.
St. Joseph's Academy guard Sam Stirmlinger had mixed emotions after her team defeated Lafayette 65-47 Wednesday night in the Class 5 sectionals at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The first emotion obviously was one of joy as the Angels are just one game away from an appearance in the Class 5 final four. They play Hazelwood Central Saturday in the Class 5 quarterfinals at 2:45 at UM-St. Louis. The Hawks, who are 23-5, defeated Poplar Bluff 56-52 Wednesday night in Farmington. But Stirmlinger also felt for some of the Lancer players. She played with Lafayette as a sophomore. "I'm very close with a lot of them," Stirmlinger said. "It was weird playing old teammates but at the same time it was a lot of fun. I was pumped up and they are …

The Lancers, who feature one of the top backcourts in the area, will take on the Angels in the Class 5 Sectional Wednesday at UMSL.
Lafayette girls basketball coach Jennifer Porter calls her backcourt of Jordynn Martin and Kayla Hall the dynamic duo. St. Joseph's Academy coach Julie Matheny said the pair are the best she has seen this season. Martin and Hall will need to be at the top of their game as the Lancers take on the Angels in the Class 5 Sectional Tournament Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. "Those two have been playing together since middle school if not before," said Porter of Martin, the two guard, and Hall, the point guard. "Both of them can shoot it and both of them can handle it and they know each other so well." Matheny has seen Martin and Hall several times and is very impressed. "They are excellent," Matheny said. "Kayla…
