St. Joe Angels 1 Game Away From a State Title

Angels in the hunt for a 7th title in school history. They meet the winner of Columbia Rock Bridge and Blue Springs of Kansas City.

Sydney Stipanovich and Erin Nelson have accomplished many things during their brilliant high school basketball careers. But winning a Missouri Class 5 state title has not been one of them. The Angels of St. Joseph’s Academy are 32-minutes away from winning their first title since 2004 and a 7th in school history. Their opponent will be either Columbia Rock Bridge or Blue Springs. They beat Blue Springs but lost to Rock Bridge earlier this year. The duo of Stipanovich and Nelson blew the doors off the Cor Jesu Academy defense. The two combined for 37 points. Nelson had a game high 20 points; Stipanovich had 17 before both took a seat with two minutes left in the game. What a night for Stpo, headed to the basketball program at the University…

The Angels have previously played all of these teams this year. They beat Blue Springs 60-38 in the Visitation Academy Holiday tournament. They beat Cor Jesu on the road January 9, 65-46 and they lost to Rock Bridge January 29 in the Webster Groves Tournament 55-40. "I Like …

Next Stop, Mizzou Arena for the St. Joe Angels Basketball Team

Sydney Stipanovich and Erin Nelson combine for 36 points to defeat Parkway South 72-43 in the quarterfinals at Lindenwood University.

There’s a little secret about the St. Joseph’s Academy basketball team. The performances by the mainstays on the front line--center Sydney Stipanovich and forward Erin Nelson are obvious. The twin performers dominated Parkway South from beginning to end to win the Class 5 quarterfinal game at Lindenwood University Saturday in convincing style over Parkway South, 72-43. Stipanovich had a double-double; 20 points and 16 rebounds. Ten of the 16 boards came in the first half. Nelson recorded 18 points in the route of the Patriots. The Angels earned a spot in Friday night’s Class 5 semifinals in the Show-Me Showdown at Mizzou Arena in Columbia against the winner of Cor Jesu or Hazelwood Central. But the little secret is that without the …

St. Joe Draws Tough Matchup Against Carthage At Prepcasts Elite Girls Basketball Shootout On Saturday

Angels are still ranked No. 2 in the area, and No. 2 in state, despite suffering first loss of the season in the Viz championship game. Carthage is 10-2 after a second-place finish at the Neosho Tournament.

Just about every time the St. Joseph's Academy girls basketball team takes the floor, they will be the featured attraction. No matter how big or prestigious the event is, the St. Joe girls almost always draw top billing. It was that way at the Visitation Holiday Tournament over the break, where the Angels went 3-1 and took second place, following a championship game loss to No. 1 Incarnate Word Academy. And it will be that way again on Saturday at De Smet High, when St. Joe will play in the marquee matchup of the 5th Annual Prepcasts Elite Girls Basketball Shootout. against Carthage (MO) High. The Angels will match up against one of the top teams from the southwest Missouri area, Carthage High, which owns a 10-2 record this season, after …

St. Joe Turns Up The 'D', Shuts Down Blue Springs In Second Half To Advance To Viz Tourney Final

Angels moved to 7-0 on the year, thanks to a brilliant showing of defense that held Blue Springs to just two field goal makes over the final two and a half quarters.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- The St. Joseph's Academy girls basketball team delivered what may have been the single best half of defensive basketball of the season on Thursday, when the Angels matched up with fellow state power Blue Springs (MO), in a semifinal game at the Visitation Academy Holiday Tournament. The Angels, who trailed by as many as 11 points early in the second quarter, held Blue Springs to just two field goals over the final two and a half quarters -- allowing just one point in the entire third quarter -- to pull away from the Wildcats for a 60-38 victory. "Well I would say that's two field goals and one point too many," St. Joe head coach Julie Matheny joked following the game. "But Blue Springs was kind of red hot in the first …

Stipanovich’s Lay-In With 21 Seconds Left Saves St. Joe In Viz Quarterfinal Against Upset-Minded Webster Groves

Angels were out of sync on offense the entire game, but managed to do just enough right at the end to pull out nail-biting victory over hard-charging Stateswomen.

TOWN AND COUNTRY -- The St. Joseph’s Academy girls basketball team managed to pull out a nail-biter of a victory Wednesday night in the quarterfinal round of the Visitation Tournament, when senior Sydney Stipanovich dropped in a layup with 21 seconds left to give the Angels a 35-33 win over the upset-minded club from Webster Groves High. The Stateswomen, who came into the game with a 6-2 record and the No. 10 ranking amongst Large School girls teams in the city, led almost the entire game and came less than a minute away from pulling off what would have been the biggest upset of the season so far. “You have to give Webster Groves credit, they played a great game,” St. Joe head coach Julie Matheny said. “They really outplayed us. They …

St. Joe Girls Stay Unbeaten With Impressive Hoops Win Over Nerinx Hall

Angels shake off slow start for big win over previously unbeaten league rivals from Nerinx.

FRONTENAC -- After beginning the season with three straight brilliant victories over Troy, Jefferson City and Ursuline Academy, the St. Joseph's Academy girls basketball team was bound to have a stinker somewhere along the way. And for the first five minutes of play on Saturday afternoon against MWAA rival Nerinx Hall, at the SJA Wellington Athletic Complex, it looked like that stinker might come in the Angels' matchup against the Markers.  Instead though, the final 27 minutes were nothing but St. Joe brilliance, as the Angels rallied back and eventually pulled away from the Markers for a 59-40 victory. "I'm pleased," St. Joe head coach Julie Matheny said in an interview with Prepcasts.com following the game. "It's kind of par for the …

St. Joe Opens Girls Hoops Season A Day Late, But Still Wins In A Rout

Sydney Stipanovich had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Erin Nelson added 19 points of her own, as the Angels claimed a Turkey Day Shootout victory over Troy.

FRONTENAC -- For all the possible bits of bad news a coach might get in the days before the first game of the season, the phone call St. Joseph's Academy basketball coach Julie Matheny got a couple days ago wasn't so bad. The Angels were supposed to open the new girls hoops season last Friday night, with a game against Althoff Catholic High in SJA's annual Turkey Day Shootout. But in the days before the game, an administrator from Althoff called Matheny and asked would St. Joe be willing to cancel the game. The reason being, the Althoff football team has been the Cinderella story of the Illinois high school playoffs, and made it to the state championship game, which was played in Champaign (IL) on Friday afternoon. And with the Crusader …

Angels Season Over After Loss to Incarnate Word in Quarterfinals

St. Joseph's falls for the third time to the Red Knights, losing 49-42 Saturday in the Class 5 quarterfinals at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Despite a pair of losses to Incarnate Word during the regular season, St. Joseph's basketball coach Julie Matheny felt good coming into Saturday's Class 5 quarterfinal game against the Red Knights. "I had good vibes," Matheny said. "I thought today was going to be our day." But instead of celebration, it was heartbreak and tears in the St. Joseph's locker room after a 49-42 loss at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. The Angels fell a game short of reaching the final four while Incarnate Word stays alive in its attempt to defend the Class 5 championship. "We had a great first quarter but when you play a team like Incarnate Word you have to play four great quarters,"  Matheny said. The second quarter was the downfall for the Angels, who …
