Burroughs and MICDS Clash For Football Bragging Rights Saturday

Burroughs is 4-0 coming into the game; MICDS is struggling at 1-3.

Want to wave a red flag in front of the Burroughs Bombers. Just print it with last year’s football score against MICDS: “45-20.” The Bombers need no further motivation. But last year’s MICDS star power has pretty much scattered. Michael Scherer is at Mizzou; Thomas Miltello at Dartmouth and Jack Howell at Brown. On the flip side, Burroughs is giddy over the prospects of Ezekiel Elliott shredding the Rams defense Saturday, kickoff 2 p.m. on the Rams home turf. Coach Gus Frerotte knows better. He has his Bombers looking at this game with the greatest of caution. He knows so much is riding on this bitter rivalry. Burroughs is 4-0; having steam rolled Cape Girardeau Central, Lutheran South, Priory and Lutheran North. MICDS has struggled out …

Maplewood Opens With an Impressive 35-19 Win over MICDS

Kahlid Hagens put on a dazzling display of offensive weaponry.

Maplewood’s senior quarterback Kahlid Hagens is one smooth operator. He is best when he is improvising the play. He can change directions on a dime, and leave defenders grasping for air. Besides that, he obviously believes in the motto “take what they give ‘em.” On the perimeter, defenders never know if he’s going to pitch, pass or run. Once he got done bamboozling a youthful and and experienced MICDS defense, he had shredded the Rams for an impressive 35-19 win on the road before an enthusiastic and packed house. Hagins ran for a 10 yard TD to open the game, then passes for TDs of 34 yards to Elijah Keely and a 56-yarder to Cortlen Brooks and a ran one in from the 6 and Keely rounded out the scoring on a 28 yard scamper. The Blue Devils …

MICDS Rams Looking For All Kinds of New Talent

The Rams went 14-1 and to the Show Me Bowl title game a year ago.

Someone might ask MICDS football coach Josh Smith to walk on a bed of hot coals. That might be easier than trying to replace the two-dozen seniors who took his team to a 14-1 record and a shot at the Class 4 Show Me Bowl state title. MICDS had three division 1 players: Michael Scherer (Mizzou), Thomas Militello (Dartmouth) and Jack Howell (Brown University). That’s a lot for a school with a moderate enrollment. "The Rams graduated a deep and talented senior class and watching players move on to the next level, there will probably be some growing pains," said Smith. Scherer rushed for 1324 yards and 24 touchdowns on the ground and led the defense as an all star middle linebacker. He’s taken his ample talents to play for Mizzou’s Tigers in …

Ladue-Frontenac Co-Male "Athletes of the Fall"

MICDS' Thomas Militello and Michael Scherer earn the honor.

The next stop for MICDS’ two Division I football players is the podium in the McDonnell Gymnasium. Senior football stars Thomas Militello and Michael Scherer will get their diplomas and graduate and take their talents to Dartmouth College and the University of Missouri, respectively, in the fall. With that, the books will be officially closed on their combined total of 5,095 yards this season and more than 10,000 yards throughout their respective careers. The guy with the warmest seat is coach Josh Smith. Between now and August he’s got to find a new quarterback, a new running back, and while he’s at it, a new middle linebacker. The two sensational seniors have been named the Co-Ladue-Frontenac Athletes of the Fall. Off the field, these …

Nope. Though they had monster seasons, that's for sure. Had it been up to me, I'd have picked Militello and Ezekiel Elliott from Burroughs. The kid had 42 touchdowns and 2203 total yards. Would've been nice to show some cross-rivalry love.   more ›

Webb City Cardinals Repeat as Class 4 Show-Me Bowl Champs

Cardinals knock MICDS from undefeated ranks with a 56-42 title win.

If a high school team completes just one pass in a game for a mere 25 yards, that would be indisputable evidence that the team would get destroyed in the game. That’s hardly so. The Webb City Cardinals completed just one pass for 25 yards but romped over MICDS 56-42 to win the 2011 Show-Me Bowl title at the Edward Jones Dome in downtown St. Louis. It was back-to-back titles for the Cardinals from Southwest Missouri. Statistically, this was probably one of the most lopsided and bizarre outcomes in the modern era of the game. Thomas Miltello shredded the Cardinals secondary with a 36 for 46 performance and five TDs. Webb City went in the opposite direction, rushing 478 yards and seven TDs on the ground as a team. Militello established a …

Really? Give me 600 more random kids and I'll bet I can come up with a few players. It also means not as many kids have to play both ways. These kids are not recruited in the 5th grade. That's just absurd. Many of the kids on the team have attended the school since Kindergarden. The real school getting screwed around here is Ladue as more kids who live in the district attend private schools. If …   more ›

Class 4 Show Me-Bowl: The Two Best Teams in the State of Missouri Clash

Webb City (14-0) and MICDS (14-0) battle for the title and the glory Friday at the Dome.

Though they’ve never met on the field of combat, Webb City’s coach John Roderique and MICDS’ Josh Smith are pretty good friends. They serve together on a state-wide coaches committee. Last year, the 2010 Cardinals, led by 28 seniors practiced before the Show-Me Bowl on the Rams’ artificial turf. This time its the immovable object versus the irresistible force. Both enter the Edward Jones Dome for the 4:15 p.m. Class 4 Show-Me Bowl title game Friday with perfect 14-0 records. Last years the Rams were a paltry 5-5. All Show-Me Bowl games will be broadcast live on the Fox Sports Midwest network as well as on Prepcasts.com. Smith calls the Webb City Cardinals the “gold standard of high school football.” Indeed, they have assumed the mantle …

The Baer Facts

Epic Coaching Efforts by Gus Frerotte, Burroughs and Josh Smith, MICDS

Making football a winning proposition, goal No. 1 for these two sparkling mentors.

Coaching any sport is definitely no bed of roses. Coaching football can be downright taxing. There are long hours, and not a lot of extra pay. There are many constituencies to please. Coaches need to be in the good graces of their players; fellow coaches, school administrators, alumni and fans. Everyone wants to take their pot-shots from time to time. You can hear the critics in the stands almost all the time. Earlier this year, I used the pulpit of Baer Facts to tell you that if I currently had a son playing high school football, I’d want it to be with Gus Frerotte, John Burroughs; Josh Smith of MICDS or Mike Tarpey at Ladue. Nothing has changed my mind on that. Two of the aforementioned have guided their teen stars into the 2011 …

MICDS Puts 14-0 Record on the Line in Show Me Title Game Friday

Rams run roughshod over host Farmington in 48-14 semifinal victory.

Farmington...Teen age athletes love to write messages on their car windows in soap. The one on an MICDS car sprinting back to St. Louis from Farmington late in the fading afternoon Saturday sun said it all: “Finish.” The 2010 Rams hardly finished what they set out to do a year ago, slinking off with a 5-5 record. One year later, this rambunctious bunch of Rams are nine wins better off, taking a perfect 14-0 record in the Class 4 championship game with mighty Webb City. The Rams beat up on Farmington in the semifinal showdown, 48-14. They had enough of a lead to force a running clock in portions of the third and fourth quarter. A howling, 30 mile per hour wind forced Farmington into all kinds of uncomfortable situations. This bunch of MICDS…

MICDS Closes Out Districts With a 35-7 Win Over Clayton

Rams 10-0 record, a far cry from 5-5 a year ago.

There’s a list of schools in the MICDS locker-room. That is a list of teams that claimed wins over the Rams one year ago. One by one, the Rams chopped names off that list: first Maplewood, Burroughs, Jeff City Helias, Ladue and finally Clayton. Some did not come easy. Like the season opening one point overtime win at Maplewood. Or the scintillating come-from-behind 56-55 win over Ladue. But last night, it was all Rams as they sewed up a 10-0 regular season record with an easy 35-7 win over host Clayton. Next is a first-round match in the state tournament of the Soldan-Sumner winner. The game is 7 p.m.Wednesday at Kirkwood. Senior quarterback Thomas Millitello cranked it up once more, firing a 51 yard strike to Jack Howell, capping a six …

MICDS Soars Into Football Playoffs With Convincing Win Over University City

Rams convert defense into points and pound Lions, 50-18 in district clincher.

When University City quarterback Andre Williams galloped 55 yards, setting up the Lions' first TD, MICDS coach Josh Smith knew his Rams were in for a dogfight. The Rams opened the game on an aerial TD, 16 yards Thomas Militello to Foster Bundy. U. City missed its extra point and the Rams clung to a one-point lead. U. City features gifted athletes with speed to burn. The MICDS stood its ground, and kept the speedy backs and receivers mostly under control. From there, MICDS took control and pounded U. City relentlessly for a satisfying 50-18 victory. Smith pronounced to his post-game huddled team they’d just won the district championships. There was plenty of hooting and hollering. A good football team has three strong components: offense, …
