Is Burroughs Grad Jon Hamm the Right Host for ESPN's Sports Awards?

See how the "Mad Men" star referred to his own high school athletic skills in the announcement.

Saying he was a "marginally successful high school athlete" at John Burroughs School, "Mad Men" TV star Jon Hamm said he had the right stuff to be the host of the ESPYS this year—the annual sports awards show by the ESPN sports cable network. "As a longtime sports fan and a marginally successful high school athlete, I feel my skill-set jibes well with a host's duties," Hamm said in the announcement posted this week on ESPN's website. "I now have to figure out what cleats to wear with a tuxedo." The show will be broadcast on July 17, at 8 p.m. St. Louis time. Hamm, a 1989 Burroughs alumnus who returned to teach theater during the 1994-95 school year, also was a member of the football, baseball and swim teams at the school. ESPN said the …

Ezekiel Elliott's Return, Early Fast Break Jam Helps Carry John Burroughs To Victory Over Principia

Senior three-sport star was gone for a week, preparing for and playing in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl football game in San Antonio, but came back on Tuesday to lead JBS to a 64-54 win over Prin.

After spending what he termed a "life-changing" week in San Antonio for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl high school football all-star game, which was played last Saturday at the Alamodome and televised nationally by NBC, John Burroughs senior Ezekiel Elliott was just hoping not to look too rusty in his first basketball game back with the Bombers on Tuesday. Elliott, a football star for the Bombers, who will play collegiately at Ohio State University next year, flew back to St. Louis on Sunday, and only had time for one practice with the team before Tuesday's key Metro League conference game against rival Principia. Fortunately for the Bombers, Elliott was able to shake off any rust he might have had pretty quickly, thanks to a resounding …

No Zeke, No Problem: Burroughs Moves to 11-0 Despite Being One Man Short In Showdown With Lutheran North

Foye Oluokun drops a triple-double, and Trevor Bain knocks down seven three-pointers in sensational JBS win over rival Lutheran North.

The entire John Burroughs community is abuzz over football star Ezekiel Elliott's trip to San Antonio this week for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl football game that will kickoff in front of a national audience at high noon today. Just about anyone with any type of tie to JBS is expected to attend one of the many "Zeke Elliott watch parties" on Saturday, so they can see first-hand how the Burroughs senior does in his first chance to play on a national stage. About the only negative part of Elliott being in San Antonio this weekend, is that meant he would have to miss the JBS home basketball game against rival Lutheran North, Friday night at historic Olin Gymnasium. That left the remaining Burroughs basketball players with a particularly …

Ezekiel Elliott Rapidly Becoming A Star At U.S. Army All-American All-Star Game

Burroughs senior is one of 90 players chosen to play in the nation's premier high school all-star football game, but has become the poster boy for many of the games TV and magazine advertisements.

When John Burroughs football star Ezekiel Elliott touched down in San Antonio on Sunday to play in this Saturday's U.S. Army All-American All-Star Game, he had no idea what to expect in the week leading up to the game. The two-time Missouri all-state performer and St. Louis-area Offensive Player of the Year, who totaled more than 3,000 all-purpose yards and scored 50 touchdowns this past season, knew the U.S. Army folks would be keeping him busy, he just didn't know how. Well, in his first couple of days down in San Antonio, Elliott has learned that the plan is to feature him not only on the field, but as one of the posterboys for the week, in many of the week's planned television and magazine advertisements. 'Zeke', as he's called by …

I have those exact shoes now. Literally. I was at the game and he threw them into the crowd after he signed them. I caught 1 and went and got the other from another fan.   more ›

Bain's Cool Under Pressure Carries John Burroughs To Chaminade Tourney Title For Second Straight Year

Senior guard knocked down two huge shots in the final minute of regulation to bring Bombers back from seven points down, in eventual 50-46 overtime win over Pattonville.

CREVE COEUR -- With just over one minute left in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Chaminade Christmas Tournament championship game against Pattonville, John Burroughs senior Trevor Bain had made just one shot. He’d only taken two shots the entire game at that point, and had spent most of the night helping set up the Bomber offense, while also playing superb defense against the Pirates litany of ultra-quick guards. But with his team down by seven points, and so close to possibly suffering their first loss of the season, Bain stepped up and knocked down two clutch long range shots that helped Burroughs force overtime. Then with the game close again in OT, Bain made three pressure-packed free throws with less than 40 seconds left, that gave …

Burroughs Football Star Ezekiel Elliott In San Antonio For U.S. Army All-American Bowl

JBS senior is flying to Texas on Sunday morning, after being selected to play in the nation’s premier high school football all-star game, which will be televised nationwide on January 5 on NBC.

While many of his teammates and classmates will be celebrating New Year’s in the typical fashion high school kids do, John Burroughs football star Ezekiel Elliott will be ringing in 2013 in a way very few ever get to do. The JBS senior, who starred as a running back/kick returner for a Bombers teams that made three straight trips to the Missouri Class 3 state championhip game, and amassed more than 3,000 all-purpose yards and scored 50 touchdowns this past season alone, has been invited to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on January 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Elliott, a unanimous choice for the Ladue-Frontenac Patch Fall MVP Burroughs Star dominates the state track meet in Jeff City The U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which is …

John Burroughs Sprints To Chaminade Tourney Championship Game With Big Win Over Cardinal Ritter

Foye Oluokun scores 25 points, and Jimmy Carney adds 20, as Bombers stay unbeaten with 75-49 win over Ritter.

CREVE COEUR -- The John Burroughs boys basketball team earned a trip to the 42nd Annual Chaminade Christmas Tournament championship game later today, thanks to a truly scintillating 75-49 win in the final game of pool play over Cardinal Ritter. The Bombers, who came into the event the overall No. 1 seed, won both games it played in Pool A and will now face the winner of Pool B, Pattonville High in the Chaminade tourney championship game on Saturday. Senior Foye Oluokun had a spectacular night for Burroughs, scoring a game-high 25 points and dishing out eight assists, as the Bombers jumped out early on Ritter and never looked back. Fellow senior Jimmy Carney also had a huge night with 20 points, and football star Ezekiel Elliott added 13 …

Extra Gear On Defense Carries John Burroughs Past Chaminade In Tournament Opener

Bombers stay unbeaten by holding Red Devils to 19 points in final two quarters of 53-48 come-from-behind victory in first round of Chaminade Tournament.

CREVE COEUR -- For the first two quarters of Wednesday’s Chaminade Christmas Tournament opener between the host Red Devils and visiting John Burroughs, the visitors looked like maybe they’d eaten too much turkey and dressing during their holiday dinners the night before. The Bombers were slow on defense, late on close-outs, and flat ineffective as rebounders. But in the second half, the No. 10-ranked team among all area Small School clubs, looked like its old self again, as Burroughs turned its defense into high gear and held off the hard-charging Chaminade squad, for a hard-fought 53-48 victory. “We didn’t play well on defense at all during that first half,” Burroughs head coach Steve Wilcutt said. “They had 29 points in the first half, …

Patch MVP Winter Week 2: John Burroughs Two-Sport Star, Foye Oluokun

Senior was a key member of the JBS football squad that made three straight trips to the state championship game, and is now leading the boys basketball team in scoring for the second straight year.

Until the final day of voting last Thursday, all five Patch MVP candidates were still in the running for our weekly top athlete award. But on that final day, the folks from John Burroughs just took over the ballot and made sure their candidate, football and basketball star Foye Oluokun, walked away with the award. Foye wound up getting 64 percent of the total votes cast, and became one of our biggest landslide Patch MVP winners ever. This week, we were able to catch up with Foye, and learned a whole lot of awesome things about one of Burroughs' top student-athletes. Here's just some of what we found out about Foye Oluokun, our Winter Week 2 Patch MVP Athlete of the Week: Patch: Even though you have been a standout player on both JBS' …

Patch High School Hoops Roundup: Two Weeks In, And The Action Is Already Getting Good

An inside look at what went down this week in local high school basketball, along with a look at what's coming up next week.

The Missouri high school basketball season in barely two weeks old, and with red-hot starts by the Ladue boys, St. Joe girls, and both John Burroughs teams, the 2012-2013 campaign is shaping up like a mighty fine year on the hardwood for the local teams. The team that's looked the best two weeks in -- and it's really no surprise -- is the St. Joseph's Academy girls, who are 3-0, with three 30-point wins this season. The most impressive win might've come on Tuesday, when the Angels, ranked No. 2 in the city in most local girls basketball polls, dismantled third-ranked Ursuline Academy by the score of 74-44. The Bears are a really good team, but they were just no match for a St. Joe squad that got 20 points, 16 rebounds, and eight blocks …
