Mid-States Central Division rivals MICDS, Ladue, and John Burroughs are nearing the midway point of the season, and need to get pick up more wins if they're going to earn a spot in either the Challenge or Wickenheiser Cup playoffs.
With games just about every Friday and Saturday night, (and sometimes late at night), the high school hockey season has just about reached its midway point, with the three local teams enjoying varying amounts of success. Regardless of the start, it's how teams finish that will determine which of the three levels of playoffs they might qualify for when the time comes in February. And though getting invited and winning any postseason tournament is always an honor, every player on the MICDS, Ladue, and John Burroughs squads this year is hoping their team will earn a berth in either the Challenge Cup or Wickenheiser Cup playoffs. Last year, Ladue won the third-level playoff tournament (called the Founder's Cup), but was on a pace to make the …

Sophomore netminder picked up his first varsity win, with 26 saves last week, in the Rams' 4-3 win over Priory.
Usually we ask upperclassmen their thoughts about college, but we're still interested in your thoughts about furthering your education. Have you thought at all about where you might want to go to college? I am actually already looking for colleges, but for lacrosse, not hockey! There are some colleges in which I'm interested, but at this time I'm not really sure exactly where I will be attending. Will you try to play hockey there (or any other sport)? Are will you be going to college as a regular student? Like I said, although hockey is my passion, I was fortunate enough to start varsity as a freshman in lacrosse. The Ladue lacrosse team was very successful and we were able to make our first ever Division 1 playoff appearance last year. …

Sophomore Ian Thomsen moves up from backline to star at center, with three goals in Rams romp over Pirates.
ST. PETERS -- With both teams playing with short benches and small rosters, the Ladue High hockey team earned its first win of the season Saturday night, with an 8-2 rout over Pattonville High, at the St. Peters Rec-Plex South ice facility. The Rams, who were playing without leading scorer Matthew Gould and top goaltender Elliot Shevitz, got big games from underclassmen stand-ins Ian Thomsen and Graham Gausnell that no one could've predicted before the game began. Thomsen, a sophomore defenseman-turned-centerman on Saturday, netted a hat trick to lead the Ladue offense, while the freshman Gausnell made his first high school start in goal a memorable one, by stopping 18 Pattonville shots to pick up his first high school victory. "It really …

Chaminade sophomore Trey Dodd had three goals and an assist, as Red Devils romp over Rams 12-2.
MANCHESTER -- For the MICDS hockey team, opening the 2012-2013 season against one of the area's best teams, nearby rival Chaminade Prep, has a certain upside, but also comes with a potentially tremendous downside. On the positive end, the Rams get to gauge exactly where they stand as a club in their first game of the season, in a matchup against a Chaminade team many believe could contend for the Mid-States Hockey Association Challenge Cup title at the end of the year. The problem there though, is if MICDS isn't quite ready for a matchup against Chaminade, then the Rams could be in for a long night against an elite-level club like the Red Devils. And unfortunately for MICDS, Saturday night's season-opening meeting turned out to be the …

Sophomore Elliot Shevitz’s 22 saves, and Charlie Jonas' goal and two assists, not enough as Rams take 6-3 loss against Lions.
MANCHESTER -- After winning the Founders' Cup championship last year, which goes to the winners of the Mid-States Hockey Association's third-level playoffs, the Ladue High hockey team returned to the ice on Friday, to officially open its 2012-2013 season. And although the Rams played a dynamite final two periods at the Queeny Park Ice Rink against a talented, elite-level club from Ft. Zumwalt East High, Ladue couldn't overcome its rough start in the first seven minutes of the season and lost its season opener to the Lions, 6-3. "It's a new season, and it's the first game, and we we're still trying to figure some things out," Ladue head coach Jon Hodgins said, after his Rams gave up three goals in the first seven minutes to fall behind 3-…

Ladue and MICDS are hoping to play their way into the elite Challenge Cup, while John Burroughs is hoping for an improvement over last year.
The last Monday in October is always brings big doings in the Missouri high school sports world. That's because that day marks the first official day that MSHSAA winter sports teams can begin practices and tryouts. Basketball courts, wrestling mats, and swimming pools all over the state were just buzzing as athletes and their coaches took the first official steps toward what is sure to be another exciting winter sports season in Missouri. There is one winter sport though, that doesn't fall under MSHSAA's jurisdiction, and therefore can begin practicing whenever it wants -- which it has been for more than a month -- and that's the high school hockey league, which is run locally by the Mid-States Hockey Association. And surprising as it may …

Matthew Gould’s two goals and Joey Tackes’ goal and two assists lead Ladue to 5-1 win over Burroughs.
Article Update: Seedings for the Mid-States Hockey Association playoffs were announced late Sunday night, with the top 16 teams in the state earning a berth a the elite St. Louis Blues Challenge Cup bracket. The top 16 second-tier teams were seeded in the Wickenheiser Cup bracket, with the bottom 10 teams landing in the Founder’s Cup bracket. Ladue was named the No. 3 seed in the Founder’s Cup, and Burroughs was selected as the No. 7 seed. Game schedules for the Mid-States Hockey playoffs will be announced on Monday, with a strong likelihood that Ladue and Burroughs will be seeded on the same side of the bracket, and could possibly face each other in the first round beginning on Thursday or Friday. With one night left to make a final …

This column covers high school hockey for Burroughs, MICDS and Ladue.
MICDS The MICDS Rams would like to forget their 10-2 loss against Francis Howell North on Monday, Dec. 27. The game started off close, with Francis Howell North taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission on a late goal. In the second period, it got out of hand, as the Knights scored five goals. MICDS netted their first goal however, with Jackson Myer scoring on an Abner Cornwell pass. The third period was much of the same, with the Knights outscoring MICDS 4-1. MICDS' lone goal came with less than a minute to go, as Chris Hiemenz scored on a power play off a Parker Monterubio pass. Francis Howell North is now 9-3-1, and won this game behind the play of Michael Pavolka who scored a hat trick and added an assist, and Andrew Ortscheid, who…

This weekly column covers hockey for MICDS, John Burroughs and Ladue.
Winter has finally arrived and with it comes cold temperatures, holidays and best of all, hockey. The Ladue and Frontenac area is a hotbed for the sport, as it is home to three competitive programs in John Burroughs High School, MICDS, and Ladue High School. This column will be dedicated to the weekly happenings of these three teams, from wins and losses to star players and amazing plays. MICDS MICDS has a record of 6-1-1, and after opening the season with a difficult 7-1 loss against the CBC Cadets, the team went on a tear, dominating their next five games with a combined score of 42-7. This past week provided much tougher challenges, as they battled Chaminade on Dec. 4 to 1-1 tie and had a thrilling 5-4 win over 2010 Mid-States …
