This week's 'Athlete of the Week' is a serious state title contender that owns the fastest time of any swimmer in the area in the individual 100-yard breaststroke.
Patch: There's only a little while left for you to decide on where you might want to go to college. What are your thoughts about college as the time to choose grows near? CY: As of right now, I haven't really set my sights on a particular school. I'm still trying to explore my options. I do know that I'd like to go into the medical field though. Patch: Will you try to swim in college (or possibly play another sport)? Or will you be going to college as a regular student? CY: That's a really hard decision... Angels nearly sweep the entire meet by winning 11 of 12 events, including all three relays and the diving competition, in a 120-65 win over Greyhounds.
CLAYTON -- At the MSHSAA state championship swim meet last February, the St. Joseph's Academy girls team finished a surprising ninth overall and even brought home a state title by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay. This season, head coach Khannie Dastgah believes she has a team that can place even higher at the state meet and several swimmers that could win individual titles if they continue to progress as they have since last season. "I'm so lucky to be coaching at St. Joe," Dastgah said. "These girls really put in the work. They practice three hours a day, five days a week. And they have great unity. Bombers lost the meet to CJA, but may have found two future swimming stars in freshmen Maddie Wessel and Barrett Carlson.
With a shorthanded roster due to illness and other issues, John Burroughs girls swim coach Leslie Kehr knew going in to Tuesday's season-opening meet against Cor Jesu Academy, that her Bombers might have trouble earning enough points to earn a team win. So instead of worrying about victories, Kehr wanted her swimmers to simply focus on making a strong first showing of the season, with an eye on improving as a group throughout the season. And that's pretty much what the Bombers delivered at the Cissel Center Pool, finishing with five wins in 12 events in what proved to be a 119-59 team loss to the Chargers.
