Developers Go Public With Sports Plans for Olivette's Warson Park

Jay Williamson & Joe Bannister want to bring ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey to 25 acres of unused space.

Jay Williamson, graduate of John Burroughs and Ladue resident returned from the PGA golf tour a year ago for several reasons. He’s spent 24 years playing professional golf, some 15 on the PGA tour. Now, it was time to spend more time with the family with three young children; begin a business career and follow another dream he’d been working on for some time. Williamson, and business partner Joe Bannister of Webster Groves have designs on bringing indoor ice hockey; outdoor lacrosse, soccer and field hockey to Olivette. The duo eye the 25-acre piece of unused ground at Warson Park in Olivette. From this non-used property would rise a twin ice rink; outdoor artificial multi purpose use fields for the fastest growing sports in America (…

What will happen to the baseball league that plays on the fields now? How will this benefit Olivette? Taxes? Sale of land? Can that land be sold? What will happen to the Community Center? Will Olivette not bring their existing plan (the past bond issue) back to the table...didn't it fail only by a few points? Will Olivette have any input in the design? What does a "land swap" (involving space in …   more ›

Sunday Best: Villa Races Past Rival St. Joe in Field Hockey, 4-1

The Villa sports complex was jammed with fans for varsity, JV and freshman field hockey competition.

They say in life, there’s something special about perfect timing. All day long at Villa Duchesne, the sun peeked in and out of some ominous and foreboding clouds, only to leave the field players of Villa and St. Joseph’s Academy and their fans dry from the elements for over two hours. Just minutes after the horn was sounded, the heavens opened up and it started to rain. Catch the photo action on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. By then, Villa players were posing for photos and hugging their family and friends. In one of the longest-standing rivalries in local prep sports, the Saints won a commanding 4-1 win over rival St. Joe. Former players come back to be recognized It was alumni day, and players from as far back as the 1960s came to …

Everything Came Up Smelling Roses Saturday at John Burroughs

Soccer team edged Priory 1-0; football won over Clayton 56-0 and field hockey was a 1-0 winner over Clayton too.

Saturday was a day of satisfying victories for the different Burroughs sports teams. The football team demolished Clayton 56-0. Field hockey won over Clayton 1-0 and the soccer team beat the defending state champs 1-0. All of the wins were on the Bombers campus Saturday. Joe Renner fired a 30 yard shot that trickled by Priory goal keeper Tristan Helmuth. Otherwise, Helmuth played a sensational game, turning away a number of strong shots. Up front, the Bombers got strong play from Ty Trezecki, Stephen McMillian and Ryan Keeney. They kept the pressure up in a game, dominated by strong midfield play. Burroughs is 10-4-1. Priory, who won all 26 games and the state title last year are 8-11 this time around. Here's action from the game in the …

St. Joe Has a Ball With Ladue Before the Fall Ball

Field hockey team posts a 4-1 win over the visiting Rams.

St. Joseph’s Academy had their annual Fall Ball Friday night. That meant those going to the dance from the field hockey team had scant little time to do their hair, makeup, throw down some dinner and get ready. That would include 19 of the 20 players on the team. The dance was for juniors and seniors only. Just one sophomore is on the varsity squad. The Angels made quick work of visiting Ladue, scoring three times in the first half, and winning 4-1. That made up for last year’s home loss to the Rams, 4-3. The first-half goals came from Marigace Ragsdale, Olivia Sauer and Claire Sauer. They are sisters. Ladue got its solo tally from Elise Pellett and Claire Sauer notched her second goal late in the contest. Sophia Sansone recorded to …

Injured Abby Martone Out: Burroughs Responds With a Win

Field hockey team plays short and shuts out Edwardsville, 1-0 in closely fought match.

Talent wise, the John Burroughs field hockey team is forced to partially play short the rest of the season. Charlotte Martin, their everything player graduated last spring and took her ample talents to the Northwestern University program. The Bombers turned to senior Abby Martone for scoring and leadership. She did not disappoint, leading the team with 9 goals and 19 points, tops on the team. Wednesday in practice, she was tripped, fell and fractured her right hand. She is due for surgery as soon as some of the swelling goes down. Her season is over. The rest of the Bombers are forced to step up. And they did nicely, shutting out Edwardsville, 1-0 at home Thursday. Burroughs scored its only goal of the game which turned out to be the game …

Miracle on Warson Road: The Big Story of the Week

Great goalkeeping: MiCDS fires 1-0 shutout of rival Villa Duchesne in field hockey.

Clearly the big story of the week happened right in Ladue. This week, the MICDS field hockey team played the perfect game and won in a squeeker over Villa Duchesne. Here's how they did it: The 1980 U.S. Olympic “Miracle on Ice” ice hockey team has nothing on the MICDS Rams. In a nail-biter to the end, the Rams pulled the stunner of the year in field hockey, beating mighty Villa Duchesne, 1-0. The Rams could hardly believe their good fortune. For 60 minutes, the Rams played to perfection. There were no unforced errors in the entire game. Look for more photos of this game on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook Page. When senior  Alex Ettinger drove the ball some 16 yards past Villa keeper Maggie Grzeskoviak, with 2:05 left in the first half,  no …

Ladue Field Hockey: Snappy 5-0 Shutout of Clayton

Caroline Stapleton gets 2 goals and the Rams improve to 8-5. Host Villa Duchense today.

Barb Dwyer is the teacher and Darby Hogan is the pupil, at least that’s how it goes in field hockey. Hogan played for Dwyer at Ladue High, and now has the reigns of the Clayton High program. Wednesday afternoon, Dwyer took student pretty much to school. Dwyer has been at coaching a long time and has an established program with which to draw talent. Hogan on the other hand is painfully creating interest one year at a time,  and building a program slowly.  The Greyhounds have won just 3 games this year. Ladue rolled up four first-half goals and cruised to a a clock shortened 5-0 victory over the visitors from Clayton. Ladue got its 4th and 5th goals from senior Caroline Stapleton. The first goal scored came from Courtney Emert, less than a …
