Four-year performer led Angels to more than 100 victories.
Now that the four-year career is over, St. Joseph’s Academy senior Erin Nelson can reflect back on those “Golden, Olden days.” She played in more than 117 games; scored 1,179 career points (7th all time at St. Joe), hauled down 808 rebounds (4th best all time) and was a main figure in the Angels going to the state tournament two of her four years The record during her four-year career is 93-24. She and her best friend center Sydney Stipanovich led the Angels to the Promised Land. For that unparalleled effort, she is the Ladue-Frontenac and Olivette Patch Female Athlete of the Winter. No one deserves the award more Nelson is taking her game locally to Saint Louis University in the fall. “I wasn’t going there at all. I had my heart set on …

Angels in the hunt for a 7th title in school history. They meet the winner of Columbia Rock Bridge and Blue Springs of Kansas City.
Sydney Stipanovich and Erin Nelson have accomplished many things during their brilliant high school basketball careers. But winning a Missouri Class 5 state title has not been one of them. The Angels of St. Joseph’s Academy are 32-minutes away from winning their first title since 2004 and a 7th in school history. Their opponent will be either Columbia Rock Bridge or Blue Springs. They beat Blue Springs but lost to Rock Bridge earlier this year. The duo of Stipanovich and Nelson blew the doors off the Cor Jesu Academy defense. The two combined for 37 points. Nelson had a game high 20 points; Stipanovich had 17 before both took a seat with two minutes left in the game. What a night for Stpo, headed to the basketball program at the University…
Angles looking for 7th state title. Coach Matheny's 10th visit to the Final Four.
If past results are any indication, then the Angels of St. Joseph's Academy may just be on solid footing. St. Joe (22-5) meets Cor Jesu Academy of Affton (21-9) in the semifinals Friday night at Mizzou Arena, tipoff is 6:15 p.m. The winner advances to the Saturday night Show-Me Showdown finals at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The consolation game will be held at 1:15 p.m. Saturday. The opponent will be either Columbia Rock Bridge (23-3) or Blue Springs of Kansas City (28-2). The Angels have previously played all of these teams this year. They beat Blue Springs 60-38 in the Visitation Academy Holiday tournament. They beat Cor Jesu on the road January 9, 65-46 and they lost to Rock Bridge January 29 in the Webster Groves Tournament 55-40. "I Like …

Sydney Stipanovich and Erin Nelson combine for 36 points to defeat Parkway South 72-43 in the quarterfinals at Lindenwood University.
There’s a little secret about the St. Joseph’s Academy basketball team. The performances by the mainstays on the front line--center Sydney Stipanovich and forward Erin Nelson are obvious. The twin performers dominated Parkway South from beginning to end to win the Class 5 quarterfinal game at Lindenwood University Saturday in convincing style over Parkway South, 72-43. Stipanovich had a double-double; 20 points and 16 rebounds. Ten of the 16 boards came in the first half. Nelson recorded 18 points in the route of the Patriots. The Angels earned a spot in Friday night’s Class 5 semifinals in the Show-Me Showdown at Mizzou Arena in Columbia against the winner of Cor Jesu or Hazelwood Central. But the little secret is that without the …

Angels face Jackson Missouri while MICDS tangles with unbeaten Incarnate Word.
By a quirk of fate, it will be MICDS, not St. Joseph’s Academy playing Incarnate Word Academy in the state sectional game of the Missouri basketball tournament tomorrow night. The game is between MICDS (24-2) and IWA (27-0) at Parkway West at 7:45 p.m. IWA, long a class 5 team (like St. Joe) dropped its enrollment and became a class 4 team this season. That is good news for the St. Joe Angels, but not so much for the MICDS Rams. The Rams defense will have to find a way to slow up sophomore sensation Napheesa Collier, the top scorer in the Metro. The combined averages of MICDS’ top scorers Emily Kyman, 11.9, Taylor Baur, 9.9 and Caroline Militello 7.8 are just slightly higher than Colliers 24.7 points per game. Rams coach Scott Small takes …

Fast Start Angels steamroll Nerinx 58-44 for Class 3, District 2 title at Ladue.
Alright coach, where’s the beef? It’s one thing that St. Joseph’s Academy (20-5) beat nemesis Nerinx Hall (17-11) at Ladue last night 58-44 for the Class 5, District 2 basketball title. But almost as important--where is that Lion’s Choice Star of the game t-shirt? This may be the mystery of the universe. More game photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. At the end of the game, Angels’ coach Julie Matheny was presented the Lions Choice gray shirt in recognition of Sydney Stipanovich’s 16-point performance. Matheny had this to say: “This is spectacular. She (Sydney) will love it. I Imagine we will never be able to take it off of her.” When asked about receiving this award from the Prepcasts Broadcast Network, Stipanovich was like a deer…

Three-year starter is headed to Saint Louis University next.
Erin Nelson, one of the strongest performers in St. Joseph's Academy history is the MVP "Athlete of the Week." She romped in the voting this week. Nelson averages 16.5 points per game; is an 8.2 rebounds per game performer, and the Angels head to the district playoffs with a 18-5 record. Patch.com: How has your season been going so far? Erin Nelson: The season is going very well and flying by. We have improved a lot since the beginning of the year. This past month, we have really come together and picked it up in practices to prepare ourselves for a successful rest of the season. Patch: What do you like best about being on the team? Erin: My favorite part is definitely the girls and coaches. We are all very close and there is not a …

Sophomore Napheesa Collier pours through 24 points for the visiting Red Knights.
For the St. Joseph’s Academy basketball team, the frustration continues. The Angles have managed just one win over Incarnate Word Academy in the last 10 games or so, and that was on the Angels' home floor two years ago. Incarnate has a newcomer to the game, sophomore 6-foot-1 Napheesa Collier who leads the area in scoring with a 24.3 average. More photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. The Angels double teamed IWA’s post player, front and back and held her to just 4-first half points. But Dan Rolfes, coach of the Red Knights turned her loose in the second half and she scored a game high 24. The Knights departed SJA with a convincing 56-44 win. The game was pure frustration for senior center Sydney Stipanovich of St. Joe who fouled …

Bob Goessling subs for his sister as coach. Abbie Combest hits 5--3 pointers points to lead all scorers.
Erin Nelson of St. Joseph’s Academy provides a unique style to her team. The moment was just golden in the Wednesday night’s 68-41 basketball win over visiting Jefferson City Helias. See more game photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. Late in the third quarter, the senior forwarded, who has already inked with Saint Louis U. was barreling the lane; headed for the hoop. She found her self down too deep and her shot bounced off the bottom of the backboard. Not done, she slapped a paw at the ball, bounding it right back to a teammate. The Angels had another chance and scored so more. It was an easy win; 15th of 18 in the season that rolls on. Nelson pitched in 14 points before sitting down for the night. Abbey Combest, a 5-foot-9 junior…

Visitors from Chicago's Southland drop games to St. Joe and Incarnate Word Academy.
Likely, most of those in attendance Sunday for the Bloom Township (Illinois) versus St. Joseph’s Academy basketball game were eager to get home and watch the lineup of National Football League playoff games later in the afternoon. The Angels obliged, running up enough of a lead in the third quarter 53-25 to force a running fourth quarter clock against the visiting Blazing Trojans. Watch the game video streamed on the Prep Broadcasts Network. Ron Newquist’ South Land team got a taste of St. Louis. They lost Saturday night to Incarnate Word Academy 88-55, and to St. Joe Sunday, 66-29. Suffice to say a bite of toasted ravioli or Ted Drewes frozen custard might have been tastier than facing two of St. Louis’ primo basketball teams. Tough visit…
