Coaches vs Cancer Shootout Features a Lot of Local Hoop Talent

Eight Missouri teams will be in the day-long event at Scottrade Center Thursday.

The Coaches vs Cancer Shootout, a benefit for the St. Louis chapter of the American Cancer Association is a lot more than just a hoop fest. This is basketball for a real cause. While the players get to battle in front of large crowds in a major league arena (Scottrade Center), precious dollars are being raised for the effort to wipe out Cancer in our lifetime. Nothing could be better than that. Matt Hixenbaugh, MICDS’ coach of a team invited back for the third consecutive year puts it this way. “To be involved in this Shootout is a great honor. It is a wonderful opportunity to use basketball to make a positive impact on the outside world. In doing this, it is a great opportunity for our guys to be involved in a wonderful endeavor and …

Duchesne Catches Ladue Coming Down the Stretch, 50-43

That loss was in the semifinals of the championships of the MICDS Holiday Festival.

Yesterday was a mixed bag for Ladue basketball teams. While the girls won the Ritenour Christmas tournament defeating the 8-0 host Huskies, the boys surrendered a 33-28 third quarter lead and lost to Duchesne of St. Charles, 50-43 in the semifinals of the MICDS Holiday Invitational. Chad Anderson’s Rams were outscored 22-10 in the final stanza.  The coach was more than a little disappointed. “Yea, we were stagnant on offense. I don’t think it was for a lack of effort. You hold a team to 50 points, mostly you will win those games.”  Anderson never minded his team was seeded No. 1 in the 16 team field.  “For our school, that was the first time ever and we just fell short.”  Ladue had a good third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 17-10. But …

Burroughs, MICDS, Ladue All Look to Extend Winning Ways

All local teams locked up in games Thursday night.

There's a couple of interesting things going on locally in football. First of all, its Yom Kippur in the Jewish faith so all the local teams have games Thursday night at 7 p.m., ahead of worship services Friday night at sunset. Also, MICDS and Ladue have to avoid the temptation of looking ahead to their Oct. 15th showdown (Ladue at MICDS 1 p.m.). Both Ladue and Burroughs feature two of the most prolific ground gainers in St. Louis. That would be the Bombers Ezekiel Elliott and Ladue's Deavin Edwards. Burroughs at Lutheran South, 7 p.m. Elliott has rushed for 780 yards and 14 TDs, fourth best in the area. He should have a clear path against 2-3 Lutheran South. The Bombers, 5-1 are featuring good balance with senior QB Davey Holmes hitting …

Four-Team Tuneup at Clayton's Gay Field

Greyhounds, Burroughs, Duchesne and DuBourg mix it up in Jamboree prior to start of season.

No one buys a car without first taking it for a spin. Friday night, four local football coaches took their collective teams out for a test drive prior to the start of the season this coming weekend. Clayton's Greyhounds played gracious hosts to the Burroughs Bombers, Duchesne Pioneers and DuBourg Cavaliers. For 90 minutes, teams got to test their new plays under a broiling sun. Ninety two degree heat didn't offer any fall snap in the air. The referees got a chance to work together, coaches found out more about their teams, players got to hit someone other than their own teammates and fans had a reason to come out on a hot night. "We'll know more when we look at the films," said Burroughs first year coach Gus Frerotte, former NFL …
