Friday Food Critic: Deer Creek Coffee

You eat the food. You drink the coffee. Tell us about your experience.

When it comes to restaurants, Creve Coeur, Frontenac, Ladue and Olivette have it covered.  We have some great local places that many would consider community gems. We have some restaurants that aren't exactly mom-and-pop, but are unique to the area, and we certainly—for better or for worse—have plenty of chains lining our main streets. But what we don't have is a consistent food critic to tell us what's good and what's not. That's where you come in. We could throw some money at a professional food critic, but that's not exactly what Patch is all about. We'd much rather know the opinion of the fine folks that eat there day-in and day-out. It's your community. You eat the food. You tell us if it passes the mark. Each week in Friday Food …

Photos of the Car Crash at Ladue's Deer Creek Coffee

We had the story about the car that smashed through a window at the local coffee shop. Here's the pictures, courtesy of the owner.

Deer Creek Coffee owner Marcy Williams shared these photos with Patch after yesterday's...mishap, when an older female driver who became confused smashed through the plate glass window at the front of the store. The wreck happened at about noon on Monday and closed the store briefly while inspecters made sure the building was safe. Nobody was seriously hurt in the accident. Deer Creek posted today on its Facebook page: "We've received word that the driver of the car who hit the cafe suffered only cuts and bruises and she'll be okay. We are so grateful no one was seriously injured." Williams told Patch she was unsure yet how she would remodel the corner of the building wrecked by the accident. A bar stretched along the window and she was …

Car Crashes Into Deer Creek Coffee

Deer Creek Coffee is doing business as usual, despite a vehicle crashing into the front of the store at approximately 12 p.m., Monday. A female driver in a vehicle involved in an earlier, separate car accident in front of the store parked her car in a lot next to Deer Creek. Co-owner Marcy Williams, who was in the store at the time, said the driver must have accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of her brakes and ran into the store. The driver was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. Williams said a customer who was in the store at the time got out of the way safely. “I heard the impact from my office,” Williams said. “I figured right away the building had been hit. The important thing is no one in the store was hurt.” …

Call Me Cole

Going Back To School 101

Here are a few ways to prepare yourself and your child for the new school year.

When the alarm went off at 6:30 a.m., I cringed at the thought that this would be my fall schedule. As the mom of a new kindergartener and a new preschooler, I quickly realized this would be my new morning routine. Gone were the days of sleeping and staying in our pajamas and snuggling. The reality set in that in order to combat problems in the morning, I would need to get organized.  I spoke with my mom friends to find out what works for them and see if I could incorporate it into our new routine. I have a preschooler and a kindergartener who both must be dropped off at two different schools with start times that are within 10 minutes of each other. This tends to be a common problem for many families and requires a methodical plan. Back …

Hotspot Sandwich Locations in Ladue and Frontenac

Whether dining in or on the go, choices are aplenty.

Grabbing lunch on the go is not always an easy task.  Choosing where and when to go are factors that must be taken into account to avoid the long wait time and crowds.  The four local Frontenac and Ladue lunch hotspots I dined at were (in alphabetical order):  Cardwell’s on the Plaza, Companion, Deer-Creek Cafe, and Schneithorst’s.   Each location offered exemplary service and food.  Here is a taste of what the locals are enjoying at each venue: Cardwell’s The menu at Cardwell’s on the plaza changes daily offering a variety of choices for every pallet.  Katie Kalist, manager of Cardwell’s said: “the Reuben (as pictured), French dip and Veggie sandwiches are our most popular.”  She also added: “reservations are taken and suggested between …

Chelsea Marie, A Budding Local Artist

You see Chelsea Marie at Ladue's Deer Creek Coffee, but her real calling is mural art and illustrations.

Sometimes, famous people just don’t need a last name. Look at Madonna. How about Rihanna? The great soccer player Pelé? Artists such as Rembrandt, Michelangelo or Titian? Chelsea Marie (Ritter Soronen) would like to be known by her surname too. This 24-year-old is carving out a career as a mural artist and illustrator in her adopted community of St. Louis. By day, she works 20 to 30 hours a week at Deer Creek Coffee in Ladue. By mid-day, she’s off to her 50-hour a week routine as a mural painter and illustrator, with gigs across the community. She lives with her two cats in Richmond Heights. Although not famous or rich yet, she’d love to combine her passion for serving charity and nonprofits with her motivating work in art. A 2008 graduate…
