First meeting of the cross-state rivals since the state tournament in 2000.
A nine point loss (75-66) was not quite what Kevin Poelker and his De Smet Jesuit Spartans had in mind, facing rival Rockhurst of Kansas City in the Coaches vs Cancer Shootout at the Scottrade Center today. The two schools last met in Columbia in the state semifinals with DeS met winning in double overtime 14 years ago. The State Line Road boys had other plans. "A win sure means a nicer bus ride home," said the Hawklettes coach Mark Nussbaum. "After the first few possessions, I think we did a nice job of putting some different defenses on them," said Nussbaum. Kyle Wolf, just now going through the recruiting process, led The Rock with 21 points and 12 rebounds. His counterpart, senior forward Nolan Berry, who is going to Butler is just …

The season is being played in the memory of the late Jim Goessling, friend to all and brother of coach Julie Goessling.
The 2012-13 St. Joseph’s Academy basketball season is dedicated to the memory of the late James R. Goessling, brother of coach Julie Goessling Matheny who succumbed to Cancer late this fall. Matheny has been coaching with a special purpose and direction since this untimely death. All of the Angels players wear black warmup jerseys with the initials “JRG” and the same number 35 on the back of every garment. Saturday night, the Angels stormed onto the floor and ran away with a 66-37 win over the now 10-3 Carthage Tigers from the Springfield area in the nightcap of the Prepcasts Elite Girls Shootout V, played this year at DeSmet. Erin Nelson (Saint Louis U.) led all scorers with 22 points; Sydney Stipanovich (Pennsylvania) scored 15. Emmie …

The Defensive End/Linebacker is standing out for reasons besides his choice of socks.
De Smet Jesuit's Donnie White, Jr. has already made an impression on college coaches--enough to garner scholarship offers from a handful of Division I programs like Arkansas, Boston, College, New Mexico and Wyoming, among others. He's now in the middle of a stretch which could see that group grow to include the University of Missouri and a number of other schools in the Midwest. Several publications touted his performance--and his pink socks--this past weekend at the Mizzou camp held at his own De Smet campus, and he's parlaying that extra attention to draw eyes to his athletic talents. Read: Overheard in Creve Coeur 'M-I-Z-S-E-C' White told Patch Monday that the Mizzou coaches said he "looked great out there," and that he hoped to hear …

Head Coach Gary Pinkel and his staff will host high school athletes from around the Midwest for a one day camp at De Smet.
Sunday marks the third day of a so-called "quiet period" in NCAA football recruiting cycles, but for potential college athletes or just prep athletes looking for a little hands-on instruction in Creve Coeur, Sunday could be an ideal day to make some noise. That's when Gary Pinkel and the football staff at the University of Missouri will descend on the De Smet campus to host one of the program's one-day summer camps. The Creve Coeur stop is the only one in the St. Louis area. The camp also features dozens of other college coaches from around the area. The camp is open to anyone from the classes of 2013-2016. Past camps have resulted in scholarship opportunities for athletes at Mizzou and other college football programs. There is a $25 …

Spartan, Ladue resident turned down scholarship offers from several Division I programs.
The Missouri Tigers Men's Basketball program picked up a number two seed in the NCAA tournament Sunday, and also added a De Smet big man to the fall recruiting class. Spartan Center Eric Moeller was at Mizzou Arena for the team's Selection Sunday celebration and after returning home decided to accept MU's offer to join the team as a preferred walk-on. He plans to sit next season as a redshirt, but will travel with the team and be on the roster. Moeller averaged 11 points, 5 rebounds and 1 block per game this past season for De Smet. Moeller made several trips to the MU campus after he said coaches discovered him while they were recruiting Nolan Berry, a junior forward who has given a verbal pledge to Butler. The offer to walk on for …

In the Lindbergh Invitational Tournament, DeSmet takes an early lead with Andrew Diemer leading his team in goals; MICDS never recovers
There are many qualified teams playing in the 2011 Lindbergh Water Polo Invitational, and MICDS (now 3-3 in league and 14-9 overall) is no exception. Assistant Coach Tom Milford said the Rams played “probably their best game of the year” Saturday morning against Saint Louis University High School (7-0, 22-1). Tied until the end of the game, SLUH ultimately came out ahead to win 6-4, but the MICDS coach was proud of the way his team played. But MICDS could not keep the momentum going. The second of their three games on Saturday, played against DeSmet (4-3, 27-6), was a tough one for the Rams. They played well, but could not keep pace with DeSmet, falling 13-8 to the Spartans. DeSmet came out quickly, scoring four goals in the first three …
