Villa's sensational little leader helped the Saints take fourth place at the MSHSAA Class 3 state championship meet, by finishing 8th and running the fastest time at state of any St. Louis-area runner.
Once again, the vote was close. But a late push in the final hours of the balloting helped send Villa Duchesne freshman cross country star Hannah Deines over the top, and into the spotlight as this week's Patch MVP "Athlete of the Week." And it's such a deserving award for Deines, who shook off an up and down first high school running season, to finish in 8th place at the MSHSAA Class 3 state championship meet. The Saints took fourth as a team, and a huge part of that was because Deines led her squad, by running the fastest time at the state meet of any runner from the St. Louis area. Deines also figures to be one of the top newcomers to watch when the spring running season rolls around. Through the great help of the folks over at Villa, …

Spirited competition in cross country among the Ladue-Frontenac Patch teams.
The Ladue-Frontenac Patch will likely field very strong cross country teams this fall. In particular, the MICDS boys should be one of the top small schools in the area while the Ladue boys and girls cross country teams will be the class of the Suburban East and should do well in big meets too. Amos Bartelsmeyer, senior at MICDS is primed for college running. He is looking seriously at a variety of Ivy League schools. He won the Class 3 state mile championship in 4:14 and ran a blistering 4:11 at the Festival of Miles Invitational at St. Louis U. High right after the state meet. Bartelsmeyer took fourth in the Class 3 cross country championships last fall in Jefferson City and should be the odds-on favorite to win this year. He should duel …

Principal Louise Losos of Clayton High School sent two emails Wednesday related to an allegation made recently against former assistant coach Pat Sullivan.
Clayton schools officials will meet with athletes in the coming days to "determine if there are any unreported complaints or concerns" about a former assistant coach accused of sexual assault, emails sent Wednesday night state. The messages from Principal Louise Losos of Clayton High School follow a statement on TV and later a blog post by Goldie Taylor about Pat Sullivan, a former coach at Normandy High School. Sullivan previously worked as a coach in the Ladue and Ferguson-Florissant school districts, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. No reports about Sullivan were on file with the Missouri High School Activities Association as of Wednesday night, communications director Jason West said. The notes Losos sent Wednesday are included …

The Suburban East Cross Country Championships were held in Shaw Park in Clayton.
Ladue junior Anna Nelson treated the Suburban East Conference Meet Tuesday as a glorified workout. It was a workout which culminated in a first place finish for Nelson in the meet which was held at Shaw Park. The Rams dominated the event, winning both the boys and girls team titles. Nelson and Cody Medler also swept individual medalist titles. "We have a big meet at Borgia in Washington Saturday so I took it easy in this race," Nelson said. "It was like a workout." Nelson, who won Tuesday with a time of 20:14.94, had a solid sophomore season and was a contributor to the Rams and their third place finish as a team at the state meet. She had her best time of the season at state, 21:09. Nelson finished 54th overall. But it didn't take Nelson …

Junior is becoming one of the top distance stars in Missouri this fall.
The junior year is critical to cross-country runners. Juniors can count the heads of seniors in front of them and know with near certainty who will be top dog the next season. Amos Bartelsmeyer, 17, star of the squad at MICDS sits in that cat bird perch. He’s won two major cross-country meets this fall and is favored in others. That’s quite an accomplishment from this lanky, 5-foot-11, 145-pounder. One year ago, he was playing soccer for the Rams. He broke his wrist, and decided he was going back to the sport he liked best in grade school at Oak Hill and middle school at MICDS. Bartlesmeyer considers himself more a middle-distance runner than the marathon prototype. Last year, he ran the mile in 4:17.11 at the state track meet in Jefferson…

KSDK reports special programs are being planned to help students and others impacted by the death of Brandon Hsueh.
According to KSDK-TV, Brandon Hsueh, the 13 year-old Priory School student who died Friday following a car accident during a Wednesday cross-country training exercise, will be remembered in a pair of programs at the school this week and next. In a statement from the school's Headmaster, Father Michael Brunner told the station that a Sunday event with grief counselors would offer help to students and parents, and that an all school mass next Friday will be a "Requiem Mass for Brandon." Funeral arrangements were being made through Lupton Chapel and were not available late Friday. KSDK also reported that off-campus running for Hsueh's age group has been suspended. It is not uncommon to see athletes from Creve Coeur area high schools running …
