Police say owners of small pets need to go out at night with the animals.
Police are teling people to be careful with their pets, especially at night, after hearing that a pair of small dogs were killed Sunday night on Villa Coublay, near Frontenac's border with Creve Coeur. Debbie Rudawsky wrote about what happened in a Patch blog She said that the family dachshund, Missy, was 15 ½ years old. "She was definitely nearing the end of her life but still had spring in her step. Max, our Papillon, was about to celebrate his 10th birthday next month and was a bundle of fur, ears and energy. It is just so horrible how their life had to end and they will be missed." Rudawsky said a vet told the family "based on their wounds and where we found them in our yard, that they were attacked and killed by at least two coyotes…

The St. Louis Jewish Light reports that B'nai El's congregation has voted to approve the move, which is not considered a merger.
There are still questions about how the arrangement will actually work, but a move to relocate B'nai El onto the campus of Congregation Shaare Emeth in nearby Creve Coeur has now been approved by the membership of both faith communities, The St. Louis Jewish Light reports. (For instant news updates follow Patch on Facebook and Twitter.) Patch has previously reported that the collaboration will allow B'nai El to focus on serving the needs of members between the ages of 50 and 75. Greg Yawitz, first-vice president of Shaare Emeth told Patch that a committee with representatives of both congregations was being established, but indicated that many of the specifics of moving forward were not yet available. “We can now dream and create together…

The Sunday evening statement said B'nai El members could "assume the full responsibilities and privileges of Congregation Shaare Emeth membership," but makes no specific reference to a merger.
Sunday night, Shaare Emeth released this following statement: The Shaare Emeth Board of Directors is excited to announce that Congregation Shaare Emeth and B'nai El Congregation will, once the members of B'nai El approve the necessary changes to their bylaws, enter into a new and innovative collaboration to create a lasting legacy for B'nai El on the Shaare Emeth campus. B'nai El Congregation is repurposing the synagogue as an independent organization that will focus on engaging all Jewish adults, generally aged 50-75, who are seeking to uniquely broaden and explore their lives; socially, communally and intellectually. The "new B'nai El" vision will insure the ongoing legacy of the B'nai El Congregation. Critical to this mission is …

The location on Ballas Road expanded its space this month.
The Creve Coeur location of the Wine and Cheese Place just expanded its space this month to make room for more stock selection. The Wine and Cheese Place at 457 North New Ballas Road in Balmoral Plaza claimed the lease for a neighboring space -- formerly Hardware Gallery, which closed in August -- last November. Paul Hayden with the Wine and Cheese Place said they were able to take possession of the space Feb. 1. Hayden said the store crew took filling and decorating the space a step at a time over the weekend. The expansion is filled with more of a growing wine, liquor and beer selection, adding on to the store since its 2011 opening. There are three other locations in the St. Louis area. The Wine and Cheese Place is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m…

Father Michael Brunner shared a message with several takeaways about life.
The following message was shared in the bulletin of St. Anselm Parish in Creve Coeur by Pastor Michael Brunner. It is republished here with permission: February 2, at the end of this week, is Groundhog Day, one of my favorite days of the year. It gives me real hope and provides a scientific basis for my greatest physical and psychological need this time of year, that winter will soon end . . . or not. If not soon, then at least an ending point is pointed out. There is light at the end of the tunnel. This tradition comes to us from the German settlers first in Pennsylvania, and stems from beliefs associated with Candlemas Day, February 2nd’s feast of the Purification in the church calendar, that was for centuries the day the clergy …

Police patrol all the schools and the day was very uneventful.
As is said in the vernacular: “All is quiet on the western front.” After a threat was made anonymously on an Instagram account sometime Wednesday, Fox 2 News reported a second Instagram account had been created and that the user profile picture was that of the shooter in the Sandy Hook shooting in Newtown, CT. And with that Ladue school officials exerted extra caution and delivered an overnight message to school parents and the media that security would be heightened and extra caution taken at all buildings in the district on Thursday. School officials were working with local police in Ladue, Olivette and Creve Coeur at 2 in the morning to make sure all security possible would be in place. Local police were on patrol at all of the …

The officer stopped subjects who reportedly had supplies and a list of area temples.
A Creve Coeur Police officer is being credited with action that likely spared Temple Israel from being victimized by two burglars. According to Police Chief Glenn Eidman, officer Mark Kernen was on patrol near the institution at Ladue Road and Spoede Road at 1:30 a.m. July 4 when he spotted 2 people who had flashlights, hammers, ducttape, gloves, masks, and a list of area temples in their car. That raised a lot of suspicion. According to police, the people said "they were just visiting different Temples in the area." The suspects were arrested for Possession of Burglary Tools. The case is still under evaluation by the St. Louis County Prosecutor, according to police. The Anti-Defamation League sent out a security bulletin after the …

The Olivette bakery with a deep history in Creve Coeur and University City closed several weeks ago.
Pratzel's Eastgate Bakery may have closed its doors but its baked goods live on. The St. Louis institution for almost a century closed its doors sometime in late summer. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Off the Menu blog reported that Kohn's Kosher Deli on Olive bought the recipes for some of the Pratzel's time-honored sweets, including its upside down cupcakes. Store Closing Pratzel's had reopened in summer of 2011 at its former manufacturing plant at the Dielman Industrial Park in Olivette after the original owners closed up shop in January. Filmaker Jon Mills, who bought rights to the Pratzel brand and recipes from the Pratzel family, told Patch last summer that he had faced some bureaucratic hurdles in reopening the business, and that …

A "soft opening" is planned for later this month.
After a summer of legislative maneuvering to expand restaurant use in certain parts of the city along with allowing bakeries on smaller pieces of property in Creve Coeur, Ray's Donuts is getting ready to make its debut later this month. Read: Ray's Donuts Coming To Creve Coeur Under current ownership, Ray's had been in the city of Olivette for the past six years, along with a satellite location in Brentwood. Bill Risberg, who manages the day-to-day operations, said the business is looking to expand and now has a centralized hub in Breckenridge Hills where all the baking will take place. Previously, the production work was done at the Olivette location. Without the need for as large an Olivette location, they made the decision to move. "We …
