Pink Magnolia Celebrates the Life & Times of the Late Designer Lilly Pulitzer

Florida socialite had commanding influence on women's styles ever since the 1960s.

There’s an aura of real sadness at the Pink Magnolia Store at 9810 Clayton Road at Dwyer Place this week. The store’s inspiration and mentor Lilly Pulitzer quietly passed away surrounded by family members at her home in Palm Beach, Florida at age 81. The designer and socialite built an empire of brightly printed clothes she produced and sold her entire professional career. How she got into women’s clothing design is interesting. Her husband Peter Pulitzer, grandson of publisher Joseph Pulitzer maintained orange groves in central Florida. Complaining of stains in her sheath dresses in the orange and grapefruit fields, she came up with something colorful to cover those stains. And that was the inspiration for a brand that often featured …

St. Mary's Dedicates New Hospital Lobby, Entrance

The ceremony at SSM St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights happened Thursday afternoon.

*Editor's note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly described the interior of a fountain at SSM St. Mary's Health Center. The interior is painted to look like the terrazzo flooring once located inside Mother Concordia Hall. This article has been updated to include the correct description. A large crowd of people gathered Thursday afternoon at SSM St. Mary's Health Center in Richmond Heights for a blessing and dedication of the hospital's new lobby and entrance. "This is just the beginning," Chief Nursing Officer Patti Kelley said. She said the changes come in conjunction with the hospital's renewed attention to its mission, specifically women's health. The new entrance, which faces Clayton Road between Bellevue and Yale avenues…

It's hard to see from the outside, but wing-by-wing renovations to the patient rooms have actually been taking place over the last few years. We opened new maternity rooms on 6-West in early 2011 and 5-East reopened this month. Both are Mother-Baby units. It is difficult to showcase patient areas in quite the same way as a common area as the lobby, so please watch for details on an open house …   more ›

One Chair Empty at Candidates' Forum

Two Days Before Election, Mary Berner Hosts Meet the Mayoral Candidates at Ladue High.

Local races are so darn hard to predict. There is no polling data to separate the front runners from the field. Nothing seems to deter upstart candidate Mary Berner, candidate for the position as Ladue’s next mayor. She’s worn out numerous pairs of shoes, knocking on some 2,000 doors and on the eve of the eve of the election she hosted a public ‘Meet the Candidates Form’ in the cafeteria at Ladue High Sunday afternoon. More than 50 residents showed up, many hoping to better understand the position of the airline pilot, turned candidate. Make no doubt about it, Berner is the outsider, seeking the position from veteran council member Anthony “Tony” Bommarito. Berner wanted this meet up to be a discussion between the two contenders. She …
