Outsmart the Grinch: Avoiding Holiday Scams Is Part of the Festive Season

The St. Louis Better Business Bureau gives tips on how to avoid being duped by con artists and other seasonal Grinches in Richmond Heights and Clayton.

Shoppers are not the only busy folks during the holiday season. The season to be jolly and joyous also is the season for scammers, warn St. Louis Better Business Bureau officials. Here are five common scams to watch out for throughout December: 1.    Online shopping scams When a website offers big ticket items or electronics at prices that are too good to be true (a $20 iPhone 2, really?) be suspicious. Patch Picks Five in Frontenac and Ladue

Summer is fading and fall is picking up with more and more events in our area.

A new season is approaching. Fall brings its own special fun and as  August winds down, the social and school calendars begin to fill. Monday, August 15, and Tuesday, August 16. St. Joseph Academy, 2307 S. Lindbergh Blvd., will hold orientation for incoming freshmen from 8:05 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Monday. Purses for Pooches and Pals

Humane Society of Missouri event will benefit the ones who cannot speak for themselves.

Who doesn’t desire a great glass of wine, some gourmet munchies, and a beautiful purse? Did we mention networking with other women and meeting some wonderful animals waiting for that special someone to take them home? The Humane Society of Missouri, 1201 Macklind Ave., is  holding its sixth Purses for Pooches and Pals event on Thursday, June 30, at the Society’s headquarters from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.   Plaza Frontenac retailers have banded together to provide gorgeous designer purses and shoes to raffle. Those retailers include Kate Spade, J. Crew, Crewcuts, Nieman Marcus, Eileen Fisher, Cole Haan, Coach, and others. Dine Out for a Good Cause, Komen Race for the Cure

Never has eating out given one such pleasure.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® is hosting their annual “Dine Out for the Cure” this Thursday, June 9 where area restaurants donate a portion of their profits for the day, usually 20 percent, to the foundation. Among the over 150 locations participating are Sugo’s, 10419 Clayton Rd., and Companion, 9781 Clayton Rd., are Dine Out “veterans” having participated since the event’s inception in 2009. Michael Del Pietro, owner of Sugo’s, said his mother and sister are both breast cancer survivors. “So it hits home a little more for me than maybe some other restaurateurs because I lived the breast cancer situation.” Del Pietro said his restaurant would be donating 25 percent of dinner proceeds to the event.
