Yesterday, Patch readers got to hear from Candace Williams, president of the St. Louis Woman’s Exchange who talked about the pending historic move to the Colonial MarketPlace in Ladue. On June 17, the organization will move into their expansive new space, increasing everything by one-third. They will be better able to serve the public and the consignment artists who provide all their rich, wonderful original work. Time to look back This is a good time to glance back at their 130 years of service. The Woman’s Exchange was born out of a need to find work for women post Civil War. Many young women either lost their husbands or fathers to this brutal four-year war of succession. In those days, women had few if any options especially those …

Local service, run by Laura David delivers high quality personal service.
This feature started out innocently enough as a result of one of our regular features, Moms Q&A. The questioned poised to our panel a few weeks ago was: “Where do you go to find reliable baby sitters.” One of the responders said the obvious choice was Chicago-based Olive You Nanny. Turns out, 34-year-old Laura David, native of Farmington, MO and resident in the Central West End runs the St. Louis division of Olive You Nanny. They have divisions in Portland, Atlanta, Madison, WI, Charlotte, Chicago and St. Louis. For nearly six months, David has been lining up families with nannies, one at a time. She loves her work enough to quit a full time research position at the Washington University School of Medicine. David has practical experience …

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the year in which Bill Van Luven relocated to St. Louis and the year in which he began working for Great Clips. He arrived and began that work in 1986. St. Louis transplant Bill Van Luven never retired. He didn't know what he would do with himself. So after a successful career with paper-packaging companies such as Smurfit-Stone, he began opening Great Clips franchises in the St. Louis metro area and serving in numerous volunteer positions. He recently learned he'd been named an Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisan by St. Andrew's Resources for Seniors System. "I was pleasantly surprised to be included in this group of 20," said Van Luven, a Central West End resident whose …

An author who lived near Clayton until recently stated in an email interview that she "got a lot of mileage" out of an appearance several years ago on The Oprah Winfrey Show. The show is scheduled to end its 25-year run Wednesday afternoon. An episode of Oprah Winfrey's show was based on Cheryl Jarvis' 2001 book titled The Marriage Sabbatical: The Journey That Brings You Home, which is about married women who "took solo journeys and, in doing so, made their relationships stronger and their lives more fulfilled," Jarvis stated in her email. The show came about after a producer for Oprah approached Perseus, the company that had published Jarvis' book. During the show, Jarvis spoke briefly from the audience, and four wives and mothers talked …

The Shriners Hospital plan to move to the Central West End on the campus of the Washington University Medical Center has been put on hold until at least 2012. Construction of the proposed $145 million hospital has been delayed off and on since 2009. "Obviously, we have a very dated facility. We are not state-0f-the-art," said Tammy Robbins, public relations director for Shriners Hospital in Frontenac. "Most of our doctors work at Washington University (in St. Louis) and the location would be much more convenient for them," said Robbins. The proposed 3.75 acre site at 4400 Clayton Ave. will become a seven-story 40-bed acute care children's hospital. Each Shriners hospital around the country has a specialty. St. Louis's specialties are …

Nicole- Megan Boken was actually finished with college, Aniya Cook was on her way, Ignorant ass. I 100% agree, "To hell with race", but that only seems to apply when less that 13% (African Americans) of our population are committing more murders by number than 65% (whites). Their is obviously a problem in the African American community with committing homicides. Does "To hell with race" also …   more ›
