MICDS Makes Quick Work of St. Elizabeth's Academy, 10-0.

Game at Midwest Soccer Academy played almost exclusively in one end of the field.

The MICDS girls soccer team took a little road trip Thursday. Suffice to say, few if any of the present team members have ever played on the pitch at the Midwest Sports Academy on Fyler Avenue in South St. Louis. No matter if it was strange surroundings, the Rams handed host St. Elizabeth’s Academy a mercy rule game shortened 10-0 loss. The game ended at the 58th minute of the second half when Klasey Medelberg found the back of the Hawks's net for the 10th goal of the match. MICDS showed good judgment and extra sportsmanship, making certain no player scored more than one goal in the game. In fact, defender Ellie Condie even got into the act with the fourth goal of the game. Courtney Kaplan opened the scoring inside one minute of the start …

A Win Is A Win For MICDS Girls Over Rival John Burroughs

Rams improve to 15-5 and plot their path in the district playoffs soon.

MICDS coach Scott Small has some decisions to make. He’s both the principal and head basketball coach at the school in Ladue. The double task just might be too daunting to continue on indefinitely. Obviously, Small is not thinking about any future decisions right now. He does have two outstanding assistants Erica Moore and Bill Goedeker who could take over without missing a heart beat. Saturday night, all eyes were on the Lady Rams who dismantled rival John Burroughs 37-23. Even in victory, Small and his staff felt there was plenty of room for improvement. “It was OK. I wished we would have made more shots,” said Small. Goedeker said “Sometime you just win playing ugly.” There were lots of missed shots and lots of missed opportunities. The…

Strong Second Half Keys Westminster Win Over MICDS

The Wildcats come back from a halftime deficit to defeat the Rams 50-42 in the Coaches Vs. Cancer Shootout at Scottrade Center.

The MICDS girls basketball team left the floor at halftime Thursday morning with a lot of momentum and a lead after a fastbreak basket by Natalie Singer, a block on defense and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Cameron Jackson. All those things happened in the final seconds of the half and the Rams had a 25-21 lead over Westminster Christian. But the momentum would not carry over to the second half as the Rams were held to just four points in the third quarter. The Wildcats would go on to win 50-42 at the Coaches Vs. Cancer High School Shootout at the Scottrade Center. "We loved played in this kind of environment and for this cause," MICDS' Campbell Torchin said. "We went into the half with a great feeling but we kept telling ourselves that we …

MICDS Girls Off to Another Fast Start

The Rams improve to 4-0 with a convincing 49-29 victory over Clayton Tuesday at MICDS.

The MICDS girls basketball team won their first 14 games of the 2010-11 season. The Rams, who have several players returning from that team, are once again off to a hot start. They improved to 4-0 Tuesday night with a 49-29 win over Clayton at MICDS. MICDS is without leading scorer Delaney Hobbs but the Rams return three starters in Campbell Torchin, Emily Kyman and Cameron Jackson. They are joined by experienced varsity players Josie Cusworth and Caroline Militello as well as talented freshmen Maya Howard and Courtney Kaplan. "We are not a big team but we have some experience and some skill," MICDS coach Scott Small said. "And I like what I have seen so far with the chemistry. These girls get along well together and they are very …

Villa Duchesne Golfers Take Third at State

Saints only one of eight final teams to improve scores on final day.

A year ago, the Villa Duchesne golf team captured the state title. This year, they brought home the third-place plaque from the Silo Ridge Golf and Country Club in Bolivar, MO. Linda Potter, their coach pointed to the improvement of the entire squad. "It was a thrill to do that," she told Greg Uptain of STL.Today. The team trophy went to the girls of Westminster Christian Academy. Westminster went undefeated for the year, firing off a low of 340 in the second round of play in Southwest Missouri. Junior Brooke Cusumano fired rounds of 80 and 84 for a two stroke victory over Megan Keck of Cole Camp for the individual title. Villa Duchesne had a team score of 378, good enough for third place in the championships. Individually, John Burroughs …

MICDS Multi-Sport Star Torchin is Ultimate Student-Athlete

The Rams senior is an outstanding performer in golf, basketball and soccer.

MICDS senior Campbell Torchin has an interesting story to tell. There’s one side of her persona that is warm and fuzzy, and another side that’s tougher than nails. First, the soft side. Ever since Torchin, 17, went to an MICDS Unplugged activities event during her sophomore year, she’s been doing volunteer work for BJCs Hospice program. Once or twice a month, Torchin, along with some friends, carve out precious time to spend with those in their last moments of life. On the tougher side, she’s as good a competitor in athletics as one might hope to find. In golf, she’s been the Rams’ medalist in each of their first three matches this season. Last year she placed 9th at the state golf meet as MICDS finished second overall. In basketball, …
