Burroughs, Elliot Too Much for Maplewood Football

Two top-in-the-state teams clashed in the final regular season game.

A game that both John Burroughs and Maplewood looked forward to playing, pitting two top teams in the state in the last regular game of the season, turned out to have less drama once it started. When Burroughs’ Ezekiel Elliott scored on a 92-yard kickoff return to start the game, it was apparent the Blue Devils would have a hard time containing him. Number 3 in state in Class 2 MRH lost to number 1 in state in Class 3 John Burroughs 34-6. The Bombers win leaves them 8-0 after the regular season. The Blue Devils finish at 7-2. Elliot finished the game with 28 carries totaling 211 yards. MRH coach Rich Nixon said the game actually played closer than the score. Mistakes made the difference for the Blue Devils, he said. The Bombers did a good …

Maplewood & Burroughs Clash For All the Marbles Friday Night

Bombers put their unbeaten streak on the line. Devils hold home field advantage.

Burroughs Coach Gus Frerotte has spent two Thanksgiving holidays in a row at the Show-Me Bowl football championships. He was there as a new assistant to Todd Small, and then head coach last year. Both times the Bombers got the bridesmaid prize. See all kinds of Burroughs football photos on the Ladue-Frontenac Facebook page. Frerotte has every intention of making the trek to the Edward Jones for the third-consecutive year. He warned his team about Maplewood, moments after they put the wraps on a 56-0 win over visiting Clayton Saturday. “Maplewood is good. They have a great quarterback (Kahlid Hagens), he’s a load,” said the Burroughs skipper. “We’ll watch some film and get ready for them.” Frankly Bomber players are giddy about going to …

Demolition Derby: Burroughs Routes Clayton 56-0 in Clock-Shortened Game

Zeke Elliott notches 3 more TDs; Peter Schnuck catches 2 TDs and adds an interception.

If they were to pass around game balls following the John Burroughs 56-0 demolition of Clayton Saturday, they’d have to have a lot of them. Many Bombers players on both offense and defense were worthy of recognition. Zeke Elliott scored 3 more TDs, adding to his gaudy total of 28 for the year. That’s 70 TDs the past two seasons for this senior star. Peter Schnuck caught 2 touchdown passes and had an interception. Linebackers Christian Bledsoe and Xavier Bledsoe and Solo Ceesay chased Greyhound QB Jake Brown all over the field. They didn’t yield a point in 4 quarters. Rushil Sheth was perfect on all of his 8 point after kicks. Be our friend on the Ladue-Frontenace Facebook page. But no resting on any laurels for this 7-0 team. They travel …

Burroughs Goes to 6-0 With 33-7 Win Over Westminster

Zeke Elliott notches 2 more TDs in a magical season.

The Westminster Wildcats held the lead over undefeated John Burroughs for a mere 18 seconds. Kyle Kinner sailed 95 yards with the opening kickoff and with the point after, the lead was 7-0 between these two Metro Conference power house teams. Ezekiel Elliott, notching his 24th, and 25th TDs of the season returned the favor on the first Bombers play from scrimmage. He broke down the defense and rambled 65 yards, 10 seconds later and with the extra point, the game was tied at 7. Burroughs notched 33 unanswered points and the Bombers dominated the scoreboard for a convincing 33-7 win on the Wildcats synthetic turf. Burroughs is 6-0, Westminster falls to 4-2. Scoring summary: Foye Oluokun gathered in Nick Duncan’s pass for 19 yards; Christian …

Burroughs at Westminster Highlights This Week's Gridiron Schedule

Ladue goes to Affton tonight; MICDS travels to Lutheran North Saturday.

Now things get interesting for the Ladue-Frontenac-Olivette area football teams. Ladue goes to Affton tonight, 7 p.m. kickoff and the Cougars have just one win. The (5-0) Burroughs Bombers go into the meat grinder portion of their schedule with a 1 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Westminster Christian Academy. Reeling MICDS meets Lutheran North Saturday at their place, kickoff is 1 p.m. Here’s a sneak peak at the weekend action: (3-2) Ladue at (1-4) Affton, Friday, 7 p.m. Mike Tarpey has helped the Rams find their mo jo. After getting demolished by a gritty McCluer team, the Rams won Home Coming 42-14 over Normandy. The Rams look often to younger players to stand in, Junior quarterback Matthew Hooper is a 43 percent passes, recording 477 yards, 4…

THE ZEKE SHOW: 6 TDs as Burroughs Obliterates MICDS, 55-7

2 called back. Ohio State-bound speedster makes it all look easy.

Saturdays football showdown, John Burroughs at MICDS never had a chance. Ezekiel Elliott, the area’s leading scorer (23) TDs scored six times, one including a 65 yard punt return and the Bombers demolished their rivals the Rams, 55-7 Saturday on the MICDS home field. To make matter worse, two more Elliott TDs were called back because of penalties. There's room for improvement Burroughs Coach Gus Frerotte knows there’s still things to keep clean up in a 5-0 season. “Zeke was offsides the first time he scored, he knows better than that.” “ Elliott should be playing for Ohio State now, not the Bombers. He rushed 12 times for 222 yards. He makes those scores look easy, prancing into the end zone while tantalizing and teasing slower defenders. …

Bon Fire, Road Race Sets the Stage for Burroughs Football at MICDS Later Today

Community run winds through the streets of Ladue from Burroughs to MICDS this morning.

FOURTH UPDATE: Saturday, 10:00 a.m. Hundreds of runners were off at 8 a.m. John Burroughs to MICDS. Burroughs' Margaret Bahe just added several great photos of the start of the race. Dave Nowak of MICDS completed the race coverage with photos of the winners. MICDS faculty member Paul Reineke was first to cross the finish line of the 2.5 miles race, followed closely by Dan Moisio, MICDS class of 2003. Some 237 runners took advantage of perfect fall weather to run down Price Road, up Ladue Road and then finish on Warson Road at the entrance of MICDS. The Birchfield Family (Blake and Kathy Birchfield of Ladue and their five children) won the "most spirited" award - seven family members participated and all crossed the finish line. They …

Burroughs and MICDS Clash For Football Bragging Rights Saturday

Burroughs is 4-0 coming into the game; MICDS is struggling at 1-3.

Want to wave a red flag in front of the Burroughs Bombers. Just print it with last year’s football score against MICDS: “45-20.” The Bombers need no further motivation. But last year’s MICDS star power has pretty much scattered. Michael Scherer is at Mizzou; Thomas Miltello at Dartmouth and Jack Howell at Brown. On the flip side, Burroughs is giddy over the prospects of Ezekiel Elliott shredding the Rams defense Saturday, kickoff 2 p.m. on the Rams home turf. Coach Gus Frerotte knows better. He has his Bombers looking at this game with the greatest of caution. He knows so much is riding on this bitter rivalry. Burroughs is 4-0; having steam rolled Cape Girardeau Central, Lutheran South, Priory and Lutheran North. MICDS has struggled out …

Saturday, Burroughs and MICDS Sports Teams All Take Center Stage

Tennis, soccer, volleyball, field hockey, football games will be played on both campuses.

The athletic complex at Mary Institute Country Day School will be a beehive of activity come Saturday. One Saturday, each year, the focal point of the Ladue universe focuses on the competition between the Bombers of John Burroughs and the Rams of MICDS. Two gentlemen who will have special interest are retired football coaches Ron Holtman from MICDS and Jim Lemen from Burroughs. Read their story here from last year. Parking will be at a premium on the North Warson Road campus. Tailgate revelers will arrive early. Construction on the new MICDS Math-Science Center has reduced parking spaces on the north lot somewhat. If there is no rain, cars will be able to park near the stadium on adjacent athletic fields. The competition begins early with …

Lutheran North, No Match for Burroughs. Crusaders Fall 56-14

Bombers continue to dominate area schools enroute to MICDS showdown Saturday.

So how do you slow down Ezekiel Elliott on a football field? Maybe tell him he cannot play in the game. Or assign about six or seven tacklers. Or just give up. Elliott has dominated the turf of the John Burroughs football field in a 4-0 season. Coach Gus Frerotte, his favorite fan couldn’t be happier. Elliott rushed for TDs of 62, 29, 7, and 76 and returned a 56 yard punt as the Bombers prepped for their showdown with MICDS running all over hapless Lutheran North 56-14. It was 49-0 at half and the game ended with a running clock. Also, Andrew Barnett hauled in a 14 yard strike from quarterback Nick Duncan and Foye Oluokun, the area’s premier returned a kick off 76 yards and reserve back Gregg Booker scored on a 55 yard run. Justin Baker …
